Having recently watched Mani Ratnam’s “Thalapathi” (1991) for the first time, I recall with a somewhat baffling fondness the visualisation of the song “Sundari Kannal.” It is a far cry from any sequences set in the present day of the film, as it evokes sequences from Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran” in Rajnikanth’s garments, resembling a samurai, or in his approach to a monument that suspiciously reminds you of the ancient gates in Japan. It is baffling because, irrespective of being clumsy or just for garmenting purposes, Ratnam’s love for Kurosawa is palpable. That love would later be integrated into Ratnam’s powerful use of symbolism or even into the blown-out lighting or the general evocation of a personal epic that he had been trying to bring about in his genre films, succeeding majorly with his 1987 classic “Nayakan.”

While we stare wondrously at what cinematographer Ravi Chandran has done to every frame we also get a drift of the individual artwork that comes together finally to give us a gangster epic on a par with Kamal-Mani’s much-revered Nayakan.

Yes, Thug Life is That good! The writing is sharp (most of the time), and the way Mani Ratnam sneaks in humour in dramatic constructs is sheer genius. Reading reviewers’ comments on the familiar ground walked by Mani Ratnam, I am reminded of what my friend Javed Akhtar said about film lyrics. “Bhai, gaane toh sab ek jaise hote hai, pyar judaai, ehsaas, milan… It is how you use words. That’s where the poetry lies.

Dhanush and Venky Atluri previously collaborated on their blockbuster film Vaathi, also titled Sir in Telugu. It was released in 2023 and gained a lot of popularity for both Dhanush and Venky Atluri. Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya co-produced it. According to The Times of India, a multi-starrer movie featuring two superstars, Suriya and Dhanush, directed by Venky Alturi, is in the making.

The film is tentatively titled Honest Raj. Dhanush is playing the lead role in the movie while Suriya is essaying an important character. Veteran Indian actor Kamal Haasan‘s 234th film “Thug Life,” directed by Mani Ratnam, has locked a worldwide theatrical release for June 5, 2025. The announcement came on Haasan’s birthday alongside a first-look teaser featuring the actor as his character Rangaraya Sakthivel Nayakar.

The pair previously teamed on gangster epic “Nayakan” (1987). The film was a watershed in both their careers. It was a box office blockbuster, won Haasan best actor at India’s national film awards and was the country’s entry to the 1988 Oscars.

The “Thug Life” cast includes Silambarasan T.R., Trisha Krishnan, Ali Fazal, Abhirami and Nasser. The film is written by Haasan and Ratnam. It is produced by Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (Rkfi), Ratnam’s Madras Talkies and Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies. The producers are Haasan, Ratnam, R. Mahendran and Siva Ananth.
