Good Night | Review - SXSW Film 2013
I'll start off by saying that I think it's hard to beat a well crafted ensemble piece that features a talented cast. And does Good Night ever feature a talented cast. If the names Todd Berger, Alex Karpovsky, Jason Newman and Chris Doubek don't mean anything to you, you haven't been paying adequate attention. Get those four together on (or off) screen and you can be guaranteed good things are going to happen. And there's not a shabby performance to be found here, with actors previously unknown to me (Samantha Thomson, Laura Clifton, Parisa Fakhri, Elizabeth Riley and Jeff Benson) all giving top notch performances.

SXSW Review: Good Night
After several years in the making, Sean Gallagher's Austin-shot film Good Night debuted at SXSW -- find out more about the journey from Gallagher in Elizabeth's interview. The good news is that since this narrative provides glimpses of the past, the filmmaker was able to capture the main characters over a time span that could mirror the fictional narrative.

Good Night revolves around a young twentysomething couple, Leigh (Adriene Mishler) and Winston (Jonny Mars) Rockwall, as they gather with their closest friends to celebrate Leigh's twenty-ninth birthday. The guests enjoy casual conversation as well as controversial and current topics as they enjoy their dinner, until Leigh drops a bomb having a profound effect on them all.  The guests, including Leigh's best friend Alice (Samantha Thomson), all react differently as they process the news. Through voice-overs and flashbacks we learn how each person became connected to Leigh.

Mishler is sweetly exquisite as Leigh,...

Man from Orlando, The | Review
While The Man from Orlando does feature a nicely constructed narrative arc that revolves around Orlando, it truly excels as a just-wacky-enough ensemble piece that showcases stand-out performances by several of Austin's best comedic actors: Chris Doubek, Kelli Bland, John Merriman, and Sam Eidson. And while I had no idea who Alan Metoskie was before seeing The Man from Orlando, his performance as Kip will forever be emblazoned as a shit-eating grin on my face. Oh, and let us not forget one of my personal favorites, Macon Blair as the bartender who refuses to serve beer to Orlando. This leaves Jason Newman and Lee Eddy -- who have done most of their work on the stage -- to play the proverbial straight parts, which they do so quite admirably.

Slackery News Tidbits, December 26
Here's the latest Austin and Texas film news.

Austin-based filmmaker Richard Linklater's 1991 movie Slacker, about the day in the life of an assortment of Austin characters, is one of 25 films selected this year to join the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, which now totals 600 films for preservation, according to Deadline. Texas' film heritage is further immortalized with the National Film Registry's addition of Dallas filmmaker Melton Barker's The Kidnappers Foil, which has been previously preserved in the Texas Archive of the Moving Image, founded by film archivist and University of Texas Rtf Assistant Professor Caroline Frick. For three decades, Barker and his film company travelled through the southern and central parts of the U.S. filming local children acting, singing and dancing. The Austin premiere of The Man From Orlando will take place on Saturday, January 12 at Stateside at the Paramount. The comedy, about a man who...
