Director Jared Hess was behind the camera for the 2025 hit A Minecraft Movie. He didn't have the same success with Masterminds in 2016 -- but nine years later, the crime comedy is now a big hit on Paramount+.

Per FlixPatrol, Masterminds is No. 3 on the Paramount+ movie charts. The crime comedy stars Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson, both of whom are now leading their own sports shows on Apple TV+ with Ted Lasso and Stick respectively, opposite Zach Galifinakis as folks who plot an $18.8 million robbery.

The movie is ranked just behind the Jack Quaid action comedy Novocaineand the 2009 Jason Bateman comedy Extract. Discovery has announced that their Jack Black and Jason Momoa-led video game adaptation is headed home. A Minecraft Moviewill be available on Max (soon HBO Max) this month.

Warner Bros. announced that A Minecraft Movie is heading to Max on Jun. 20 and will also premiere on HBO linear Jun. 21. at 8:00 p.m. Est. Additionally, an Asl (American Sign Language) version of the film is set to be available on Max the same day. The film was made available on digital platforms in mid-May, but it now has a chance to double down on its popularity on streaming. A Minecraft Movie may have failed to impress critics, garnering a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences fell in love with the kid-friendly adventure.

Warner Bros. and Legendary have set a streaming premiere date for their cultural phenomenon, A Minecraft Movie, based on the hit video game of the same name. The film will begin streaming globally on Max on Friday, June 20, debuting on HBO linear on Saturday, June 21 at 8:00 p.m. Et.

Jack Black is reuniting with the Farrelly brothers for Christmas comedy Dear Santa, and here’s the trailer for the film.

Jack Black and the Farrelly brothers have worked together before. Go back to 2001, and we got Shallow Hal. It follows a man (Black) who is hypnotized into seeing only the inner beauty of women and falls in love with Gwyneth Paltrow. It remains a prime example of the Farrelly brothers’ near-the-knuckle comedy. However, it’s also a film with a rather unpleasant mean streak which has attracted a lot of criticism in the years since its release.

Anyway, to now. Jack Black has reunited with the Farrelly brothers to play a twisted version of Father Christmas in festive film Dear Santa.

A Minecraft Movie will be heading to theaters in 2025. Now, the creative team behind the adaption of the popular sandbox video game shared some new information about the project.

Speaking during Minecraft Live 2024 via YouTube, Mojang's creative director of entertainment, Torfi Frans Olafsson, offered some insight into Jason Momoa's character, Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. "Figuring out crafting was super fun," he said. "When the game came out, there wasn't even like... there wasn't a recipe book, and people were like 'wait, what happens if I put these things like that?' When Garrett's character and these new characters come into the world, they don't know the recipes. They don't know what to do."

Mojang Studios offered a special treat for the Minecraft community during a recent video livestream for creators: a sneak peek into the game's film adaptation. Mojang creative head Torfi Frans Olafsson revealed that A Minecraft Movie was conceived as live-action from the get-go. "We first started talking about making a movie over a decade ago," he said. "We thought a lot about what kind of movie to do and we chose live-action because it's not something that's been seen before on this scale." Director Jared Hess affirmed this approach was their tribute to Minecraft's modders and creators.

The argument that some video games should not be given the live-action treatment has been made by many after the release of the official trailer for A Minecraft Movie. A new viral video that recreates the trailer in animation further argues that point.

Just days after its release, the trailer for A Minecraft Movie soared past one million dislikes on YouTube. Many of those commenting on the trailer criticized the design of the animal characters from Minecraft in a live-action world, suggesting that they just didn't visually translate well to the new medium. @Alumio_ on X subsequently shared a video of the whole trailer recreated with animated Minecraft imagery. The latest video game adaptation, A Minecraft Movie, has drawn some concerning numbers with its reception on YouTube.

Shared on Sept. 4, the first trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures' A Minecraft Movie pulled in more than 28.2 million views within its first three days online. However, the number of dislikes given to the video has already surpassed 1.2 million, a huge difference compared to the trailer's 588K likes. To draw such a high number of dislikes in the span of three days is likely being seen as very concerning behind the scenes of the studio, especially if that negative number continues to grow exponentially.

In the trailer, Momoa’s Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison is pulled into the Overworld alongside a misfit group of Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks), and can only get home with the help of an expert crafter named Steve, played by Jack Black.

“Anything you can dream about here, you can make,” Black says while introducing himself. Instead of expressing relief, Momoa and his crew respond with disdain. “This guy is such a toolbag,” Myers blurts out.

The video game adaptation was directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) from a screenplay penned by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. Jennifer Coolidge will also appear.

The first official trailer for the "Minecraft" movie is here. The new film is based on the wildly popular, visually retro open-world building video game of the same name, and we're hoping it'll be a little less "Super Mario Bros Movie" and a little more "Lego Batman Movie" or "Barbie." There's a lot of intrigue and excitement surrounding Warner Bros.' upcoming Minecraft movie and, as we first reported on GameFragger.com, a first look has leaked online today courtesy of a "packaging guide" document. 

In the images, we see Jack Black's Steve - depicted as a regular human - decked out in a blue t-shirt and jeans. The bearded The Super Mario Bros. Movie star is also shown wielding a blocky pickaxe alongside a mossy Creeper, a cuboid bee, and a pink sheep. 

A brief story synopsis is also included which sheds new light on what's to come in Minecraft; apparently, Steve will be captured by an evil entity called Malgosha, with his fate in the hands of "four fresh visitors" to the Minecraft world. It sounds very Jumanji-esque!

Minecraft is getting its own television series. This will be a new adaptation that's totally separate from the upcoming feature film adaptation that's also in the works.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Minecraft developer Mojang Studios has partnered up with Netflix to develop a CG-animated TV series. WildBrain will handle the animation. The announcement was made on Thursday for the 15th anniversary of the video game, but there are not many other details that were revealed. What was confirmed is that the series will present an original story with new characters that "shows the Minecraft world in a new light." A teaser for the series was released by Netflix.
