Exclusive: Oscar winner Cillian Murphy’s latest project, Steve, is wrapping production this week in the UK. Murphy stars in the reimagining of Max Porter’s novel Shy, and also produces under his Big Things Films banner with partner Alan Moloney. Netflix greenlighted the film in collaboration with Big Things back in February and will distribute globally. Scroll down for a first-look photo from the set.

Previously unannounced main cast includes Jay Lycurgo, whose credits include Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, Titans and I May Destroy You.

Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform college amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the college’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health.

Exclusive: It’s been a long time coming amid trickles of information that never were fully confirmed, but the Shelby family faithful can now wholly rejoice as the Peaky Blinders movie is officially moving forward. Netflix has greenlit a feature film that will star Oscar winner Cillian Murphy in a return to the iconic role of the Birmingham clan’s leader Tommy Shelby.

Tom Harper is directing the untitled film. Harper is no stranger to Peaky, having helmed the back half of Season 1.

Production is set to begin later this year from a script by Peaky creator Steven Knight. Producers are Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy and Guy Heeley. Exec producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason. The feature will be made in association with BBC Film.

With the odd exception, Oscar-winning actors don’t tend to be short of work in the wake of winning the coveted gong, and the same seems true for Cillian Murphy. In fairness, the actor’s schedule was already pretty busy, but he’s added another project to his slate that will see him produce and star in another take on a non-fiction story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy has signed up to star in Blood Runs Coal, an adaptation of the book of the same name. Universal is backing the project, which has been penned by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth who previously co-wrote Edge Of Tomorrow together. No director has been named yet.

The project is based on the 2020 book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America. Author Mark A. Bradley’s book follows the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, who was killed at home with his wife and daughter. The killings followed Yablonski campaigning against a corrupt union leader, and sparked a lengthy investigation that unveiled shady dealings within the coal industry.

John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce via Davis Entertainment. Murphy and Alan Moloney will produce via Big Things Films. Bradley will executive produce.
