Ghost Digital Cinema has just released Malto, a short about pro skateboarder Sean Malto and the year he’s spent recovering from a massive injury in order to skate again. Directed by Ty Evans, the short was shot entirely on an iPhone using a slew of pro gear, including cinema lenses and a $9.99 app, Filmic Pro. Particularly interesting for those into iPhone cinematography is the short behind-the-scenes video, posted below, that shows the lenses, gimbal, use of the iPhone screen as viewfinder and more.

Skateboarding legend Paul Rodriguez will debut the trailer for skateboarding documentary “We Are Blood” at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards. The film, directed by famous skate film director Ty Evans, will feature Rodriguez as well as several other prominent skateboarders as they attempt to show how the culture of skateboarding can create intense bonds and change lives. “We Are Blood elevates the traditional skateboarding film to connect with skateboarders and non-skateboarders alike. Ty Evans is one of the most influential skate filmmakers of all time. Paul Rodriguez is a four-time X Games champ and one of the superstars of the sport. Recently, the two got together and traveled the globe, seeking out skateboarders from all over the world to illustrate the bond the sport provides. The result is We Are Blood, a documentary which comes out in August 2015.

After an event for the trailer premiere, we had a chance to sit down with Ty and Paul to talk about the movie. Over the course of our interview, we discussed how the project came about, what they hope audiences get out of it, how the experience has impacted Paul, and much more.

What was the initial seed of an idea for this project?

Evans: I think initially Paul and I both got to this point...

Here's the trailer for a cool looking skateboarding film called Pretty Sweet, which was directed by Ty Evans, Cory Weincheque and Spike Jonze. Jonze is involved with a very wide variety of projects, and has always broken ground with the inventive skits and filming techniques he has brought to the Girl/Chocolate and Lakai skate videos. The director also picks up his skateboard for the film and shows off his skating skills. The film features the infamously tight-knit Girl and Chocolate crew, including Guy Mariano, Eric Koston, Sean Malto, Marc Johnson, Jesus Fernandez, Vincent Alvarez, Elijah Berle, Justin Eldridge, Brian Anderson and a ton of other skaters.

I love the sport of skateboarding, and I've always enjoyed watching skate videos and documentaries. There's some really cool shots in the trailer -- even when Marc Johnson Doesn't land a trick it still looks buttery. It's definitely worth checking out for anyone looking to see some awesomeness!

  Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze started his career making skateboarding videos and is co-owner of skateboard company Girl Skateboards with pro-skate dudes Rick Howard and Mike Carroll. Ten years ago, following the release of the critically acclaimed, quirky comedy Being John Malkovich, New York City's Museum of Modern Art approached the film's director, Spike Jonze, about doing a retrospective at the museum. Shocked, Jonze rejected MoMA’s offer, saying that he had only had one feature film, surely not enough of a career to warrant an exhibition. Now Jonze has given in, and this Sunday, MoMA wraps up its two-week Filmmaker in Focus series “Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years.” (He’s 39). I was having an argument with myself yesterday on the way home from work. It got quite heated. I was assessing the length of time it takes me to get home, and thus attempting to gauge roughly how much free time I would have before sleep stole me away for the night. I realised that it was perfectly possible to estimate the journey to a fairly accurate time-frame: between 50 and 54 minutes. That means that, leaving work at bang on six like any other dispassionate employee, I must arrive home between 6:50 and 6:54. The automatic reaction to this was to simply round up to 7 o’clock. And surely this is the normal thing to do? I wasn’t exactly going to say “right, its 6:54 now and I’ll probably hit the sack around midnight, so that gives me 5 hours and 6 minutes of free time”. So we all know that Spike Jonze is famous for a few things; some of us love his music videos (and with over 50 under his belt, you can't deny the man has made some of the most interesting videos over the last 17 years), some of us love his films, and there are some of us that just know him as that guy who married (and then divorced) Sofia Coppola. But if you've been a follower of his career then you know that one of his great loves is skateboarding. In the new video for Unkle's song, Heaven, the director reedited footage from his 2007 skateboarding film, * Fully Flared -- and the result is a little hypnotic (not to mention strange), but more importantly it's pretty damn awesome.

But as much as I love Jonze's work on the small screen, I can't wait for the man to make it back into theaters.

Director Spike Jonze has returned to music videos with a clip for Unkle entitled "Heaven." It's a gorgeously shot slo-mo return to Jonze's skateboarding days that crescendos with... well, I won't spoil it any more than the below statement from Unkle's MySpace page (and the screen grab) already does.
