‘The Gilded Age’ Director Unpacks Bertha’s Visit, Women’s Suffrage and That Shocking Death
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode six of The Gilded Age.]

It’s hard to believe The Gilded Age is winding down. The latest episode “If You Want to Cook an Omelette” is number six of just eight, yet the drama is not de-escalating — only revving up, especially with the just-in news of a season four renewal.

In the latest episode, Bertha (Carrie Coon) traveled to England to “fix” things for Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) who expressed her unhappiness to her father George (Morgan Spector) who, of course, let his wife have it. Intriguingly, her visit made a huge impact not just on Gladys, but perhaps on how fans view her actions. Could Bertha have been right about Gladys marrying the Duke all along?

Just as Gladys and Hector (Ben Lamb) may be finding their groove towards happy matrimony, there appears to be trouble brewing for Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Bertha, and George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson) who just became engaged,...

The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6's Tragic Death Defended By Director & EPs: "Shocking Things Are True In Life"
Image
The Gilded Age's shocking season 3, episode 6 death has been defended by the show's creatives. The episode ended with a stunning revelation which saw John Adams struck by a horse and carriage as he crossed the street in New York, after sharing one final tender moment with his former love interest, Oscar van Rhijn.

The Gilded Age season 3, episode 6 would mark a shock for the show, with John Adams' death being the show's first real death since Ada's husband Luke, and the first death of a prominent character. While episode seven has not yet aired, it seems pretty clear that John's death is legitimate, and the show's creatives have spoken up to defend the decision.

In an interview with Screenrant, director Deborah Kampmeier discussed how the scene was beautiful to shoot, and how it brought strong emotional impact for the audience. She spoke of her shock and surprise when reading...

The director of The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5 has now introduced the Haymarket as a new location for the series to explore and explains why it is so significant. The location presents a great opportunity for The Gilded Age season 3 to explore a side of New York that the show often misses while setting up big changes for several characters.

The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5, saw Larry Russell propose to Marian Brook, though there are still some uncertainties in the couple's future. Larry has to go to the Wild West of Arizona to help broker a business deal for his father, George Russell. Additionally, Larry's night out at the Haymarket highlights a side of the character audiences have not seen before.

Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5, "A Different World."Things have reached a boiling point with the social-climbing Russell family at the center of The Gilded Age, following the marriage of their daughter. The director of season 3, episode 5, "A Different World," has offered some insights into what is next for Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George (Morgan Spector), once the show's unstoppable power couple.

While George's railroads fund the family's opulent lifestyle, he has always trusted Bertha with cementing their place in society. However, this took a dark turn this season when Bertha pushed for her daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) to marry the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb).Upon arriving in England, Gladys is mistreated and humiliated by her new sister-in-law.

In The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5's ending, Bertha insists she can still fix the situation, but George may be unable to ever forgive her. Episode director...

‘The Gilded Age’: How The HBO Drama Created A Castle Fit For A New Duchess
Image
Gladys deserves the mother of all castles after the ordeal she went through in New York City. But The Gilded Age production didn’t need to go to England to find the perfect home for the new Duchess of Buckingham.

Two different estates in Newport, R.I. — along with one in Long Island — served as Sidmouth Castle in the episode titled “A Different World” that aired Sunday. To achieve the opening shot, however, director Deborah Kampmeier relied on an actual pond in England to project the image of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector (Ben Lamb) riding a carriage through the estate grounds.

“We put the visual effect of the carriage in upside down in the water, and then the wide shot of it moving through the countryside. That’s England,” said Kampmeier. “And then as we approach the castle, that is an approach to an estate in Newport. We brought...

How The Gilded Age Season 3 Sets Up Bertha & George Russell's Marital Troubles Explained By Episode 2 Director
Image
Warning: Spoilers For The Gilded Age Season 3, Episode 2 - "What The Papers Say"

The Gilded Age director Deborah Kampmeier explains how the conflict between George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) over their daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) marrying the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), is creating turmoil in their own marriage. George promised Gladys she could marry for love, but Bertha's scheme to wed her to the Duke could cause George to break his word, leading to a schism between them.

Speaking to ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, The Gilded Age season 3, episode 2's director, Deborah Kampmeier, discusses how Bertha's deal with the Duke of Buckingham steps over into George's "domain," which is business. Kampmeier explains how George and Bertha's "hearts are moving in different directions and separating them," which potentially sets up a break in their marriage. Read Kampmeier's quote below:

How ‘The Gilded Age’ Shot in Newport’s Historic Mansions, and Brought a Tourism Boom to the Wealthy Rhode Island Enclave
Image
“Stand back, I’m about to act,” Ashlie Atkinson, who plays gossipy Mrs. Fish on HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” jokes as she prepares for another take of a luncheon scene that finds her giving side-eye to Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), the grande dame of the upper crust.

It’s a sunny October morning, and Atkinson is surrounded by dozens of women in elaborate gowns, as well as tuxedo-clad butlers. Her stately surroundings look like something out of a John Singer Sargent painting. That’s fitting because the scene unfolds at The Ledges, the oceanfront estate of the Cushing family, members of Newport’s social scene when it was the summer destination for the old-money elite and robber barons that Sargent immortalized. It’s one of several historical locations to feature prominently on “The Gilded Age” since the show began in 2022. For the creators, the Rhode Island resort, which has...

Brilliant Minds Season 1 packed some emotional gut punches, including Ericka’s Ptsd from watching Celia die from the elevator collapsing. It was an incredibly emotional hour of TV.

Star Trek: Picard actress was "gutted" when she learned her character was being killed
Image
It was in the third season of Star Trek: Picard when Stephanie Czajkowski found herself playing a part-Deltan/part-Vulcan aboard the bridge of the USS Titan, captained by Liam Shaw [Todd Stashwick]. Czajkowski didn't know originally that she was auditioning for a role on Star Trek, but once she was aboard, she would look around every day and marvel at the fact that was on an "iconic bridge" and knew it "was only going to last for so long."

Czajkowski was right, but it wasn't because the series was ending. Her character, T'Veen, didn't make it to the end of the season as the character was killed by Vadic [Amanda Plummer] in the eighth episode "Surrender." She learned of the upcoming death of her character by that episode's director, Deborah Kampmeier. Czajkowski was "gutted" when she learned her character was going to be executed and disappointed that she wasn't going...

Deborah Kampmeier (‘The Gilded Age’ director) on 2nd season’s ‘heartbreaking’ scenes and ‘complex female characters’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I was obsessed with Edith Wharton when I was a teenager. That whole world was very much a part of my imagination when I was a young girl,” remembers Deborah Kampmeier, who directs two episodes of the second season of “The Gilded Age.” The HBO drama series draws heavily on the works of the legendary writer, and the director’s affinity for her writing and the opportunity to step into “the decadence of the world” of that period drew her to the project. She was also inspired by the “epic nature of the style” of the show that was established in its first season by directors Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

To acclimate herself to the visual style of the lavish period piece, which is set in 1880s New York, Kampmeier “really studied season one,” sharing, “I watched those episodes multiple times.” She worked...

The Gilded Age Director Takes Us Inside Season 2’s Scandalous New Romance
Image
The Gilded Age loves a scandal, and Sunday’s episode gave us a doozy. Remember that young widow who was looking to hire someone to remodel her house? Well, Larry scored the coveted gig this week — and they’ll be doing most of their work in her bedroom.

That’s right, we’re only two episodes into the new season and we’ve already got ourselves a good old-fashioned forbidden romance, all the better that Larry’s love interest is played by Laura Benanti. But there’s much more to her character, the quick-witted Susan Blaine, than meets the eye.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 1 Recap: What to Remember for Season 2
Image
“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.

Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Fellowes also injected servant-class stories into the ensemble cast,...

Oldenburg Fest Honors Cinema Iconoclasts Isild Le Besco, Jen Gatien With 2023 Tribute Awards
Image
The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.

Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).

Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 TV Review
Image
Plot: After receiving a cryptic, urgent distress call from Dr. Beverly Crusher, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard enlists help from generations old and new to embark on one final adventure: a daring mission that will change Starfleet, and his old crew forever.

Review: When the first season of Star Trek: Picard debuted, I gave it a glowing review. I had only seen the first episodes of the season, and while I liked the entirety of it, I was underwhelmed by the uneven ending. The same thing happened for season two: I loved the return of more Next Generation characters, and the early episodes I was given were great, but the season did not stick the landing. I went into the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard cautiously optimistic but prepared to be underwhelmed as I was twice before. Thankfully, this season pivots entirely away from the two that came before...

Tales of the Walking Dead's Danny Ramirez Explains How He Channeled Eric's Trauma
Parker Posey, Anthony Edwards, Terry Crews, Samantha Morton, Jessie T. Usher, and Daniella Pineda in Tales of the Walking Dead (2022)
Tales of the Walking Dead wrapped up its first season Sunday with a trippy episode that focused on a young couple claiming a house as their own after its owner dies.

Thanks to some ghostly occurrences, it quickly became a battle for survival.

Danny Ramirez, who played Eric, is no stranger to the franchise.

Ramirez revealed that he did 10 sessions for Telltale's The Walking Dead videogame.

He was set to play Javier.

"I played Javier before they aged him up," Ramirez said with a laugh.

"I had been in the world for a moment," he said, before revealing that working on Tales of the Walking Dead felt like a redemption arc for him.

Danny liked that his episode was unattached to anything else in The Walking Dead universe.

"It feels like I went in and did a one-hour mini-movie," the actor said while crediting the writer (Lindsey Villarreal), the...

“Tales of the Walking Dead” Review – Season Finale “La Doña” Swings Big With Supernatural Haunted House Story
Image
For the season finale of the first “The Walking Dead” anthology series, “Tales of the Walking Dead” delivers an unexpected supernatural haunted house story set amidst the zombie apocalypse. Directed by Deborah Kampmeier (“Clarice”), “La Doña” follows a survivor couple – Eric (Danny Ramirez) and Idalia (Daniella Pineda) – as they make an eerie, candle-lit home their new place of sanctuary away from the undead. With the shambling corpses of the outside-world at bay, the duo must face off against a new set of horrors nestled within their humble abode.

“La Doña,” which translates to “The Lady,” makes use of cultural elements to set the scene for its chilling main location. Candles, crosses, Jesus statues, and other spiritual objects line every nook and cranny of the episode’s setting. Aside from Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), the world of “The Walking Dead” hasn’t explored many other cultural and religious reactions to the rising of the dead.

Tape - Jennie Kermode - 16063
Deborah Kampmeier
The Me Too movement has done a lot to raise awareness of sexual exploitation and abuse in the film industry, but cultural understanding of how it happens still has a long way to go. Based on real events that happened to a friend of director Deborah Kampmeier, this film explores some of the factors that make young actresses vulnerable to abuse and some of the reasons why they might not wish to talk about it afterwards.

It begins with Rosa (Annarosa Mudd) shaving off her long dark hair, piercing her tongue and putting on dark lipstick and shades, a traditional cinematic post-trauma transformation which now has added reference because of the particular resemblance it conjures up. As well as changing the way she looks - and shedding characteristics she associates with the way she was targeted - she's strapping tiny cameras and wires to her body: going prepared.

For what?...

Tape – Review
Isabelle Fuhrman at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival
Isabelle Fuhrman as Isabelle in Deborah Kampmeier’s harrowing, true-story based #MeToo drama Tape. Photo courtesy Full Moon Films.

Tape opens with images of the mutilated character Lavinia from Shakespeare’s “Titus Andronicus,” followed by horrific footage of a young woman strapping a camera to her belly to film herself engaged in self-mutilation. The scene looks like something out of a horror film but the film shifts gears, as she turns her camera towards secretly filming a predatory male director/producer as he moves in on a young actress, with a pretense of coaching her acting. The echos of Harvey Weinstein and his ilk are unmistakable, and this based-on-a-true story about a Me Too experience offers a harrowing journey with a gut-punch ending.

The fact that it is based on a true story adds power to director/writer Deborah Kampmeier’s taut drama Tape, is a chilling drama for the MeToo era,...

‘Resistance’ Pivots To Digital Release, ‘Tape’ Sets Virtual Premiere, Kino Lorber And Music Box Films Launch Online Exhibitions – Specialty Streaming Preview
Jonathan Jakubowicz
The specialty box office space has quickly adapted to the changing film landscape as many are shifting to virtual theatrical openings. Many indie and arthouse titles do day and date releases and are VOD-only so the transition, for the most part, is familiar territory for many distributors and production companies.

Written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, Resistance tells the true story of a group of Girls and Boy Scouts that created a network that went on to save nearly 10,000 orphans whose parents had been killed by the Nazis in the World War II. Jesse Eisenberg takes the lead role as an aspiring Jewish actor who has a need to help the children which leads him to the world of pantomime. As a result, he would become the iconic French mime Marcel Marceau.

‘Tape’ Review: Strong Performances Elevate #MeToo Drama That Doesn’t Reckon With Worst Questions
Tape (2020)
Long before struggling actress Pearl (Isabelle Fuhrmann) finds herself at the mercy of a powerful man who demands sex in exchange for her career advancement, she’s already been violated by another person bent on trading on Pearl’s personal trauma for their own ends. That Deborah Kampmeier’s “Tape” — per a title card, “based on true events” — is unable to reckon with the implications of its own plot in service to a story about pervasive sexual misconduct is one of many missteps the lo-fi #MeToo drama makes, highlighting how far even the most eager of allies still has to go.

At least the film, Kampmeir’s fourth feature (she’s likely best known for her similarly discomfiting drama “Hounddog”) Before we meet wide-eyed, nearly manic Pearl, there’s Rosa (Annarosa Mudd), clearly reeling from her own trauma and working through it by preparing for an upcoming audition. But Rosa...

‘Tape’: Film Review
Tape (2020)
“Tape,” a guerrilla indie drama that confronts some of the ways sexual harassment has been embedded in the entertainment industry, begins with Rosa (Annarosa Mudd) getting ready to go undercover — but really, she’s dressing for battle. After rigging herself up with a hidden camera, she mutilates her body in homage to Lavinia in “Titus Andronicus,” piercing her own tongue and using a razor blade to carve a bracelet of blood around her wrist. She then shaves off her long curly brown hair, leaving a scalp that’s more patchy than chic, and completes the look with dark magenta lipstick, a long black “Matrix” coat, and big sunglasses.

She then heads to a reality-show audition, pretending to be an actress in the waiting room. But really, she’s there to surreptitiously film what she sees, especially once she connects with Pearl (Isabelle Fuhrman), an ambitious but naive young actress. We’re not sure,...

Isabelle Fuhrman in Trailer for Aspiring Actress True Story 'Tape' Film
Tape (2001)
"Following my method will get you where you need to go in the quickest route possible." Full Moon Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled simply Tape, the latest film by director Deborah Kampmeier. Based on true events and set in New York City, Tape is the story of an aspiring actress who crosses paths with the darker side of the entertainment industry. The film sounds a bit inspired by Harvey Weinstein (and Rose McGowan) and what he would make actresses go through. Here's a more compelling description: "This film addresses burning societal curiosities, taking the audience into the room where questionable behavior goes unseen, finally answering the question 'how could this kind of thing happen?' More than a film, Tape is a visceral moment-by-moment unveiling of the way ambitious and everyday women are systematically coerced and taken advantage of." This stars Isabelle Fuhrman, with Annarosa Mudd,...
