Batman Just Made a Controversial Change to His 'No-Kill' Rule That Nobody Will Approve Of
Image
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #2 (2025)!

Batman is famous in the DC Universe and among fans for his “No-Kill” rule, which essentially reflects the Dark Knight’s controversial belief that killing is unacceptable under any circumstances and that anyone who does kill must be held accountable. However, DC has just made an update to this character-defining rule, and animal lovers might not be happy.

Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, and Luis Guerrero’s Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #2 picks up right where the last issue left off, with the Justice League facing an enraged King Kong, who, despite their previous team-up, no longer recognizes them.

Just as the League prepares to deescalate the situation with Kong, a kaiju-sized Killer Croc suddenly launches himself at the giant ape, triggering a clash of titans. Initially caught off guard by this unexpected turn, the League hesitates. But they...

The Forgotten Comic That Turned DC's Justice League Into Western Heroes
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

You mostly know DC Comics for their superhero books, but they've published a fair share of Western comics too: "All-Star Western," "Weird Western Tales," etc. Scarred gunslinger Jonah Hex sometimes crosses over with DC superheroes too. But one 1997 comic went even further out West and turned the Justice League into cowboys: "Justice Riders," scripted by Chuck Dixon and drawn by J. H. Williams III.

In the frontier town of Paradise, the outlaw Felix Faust pulls a daring escape that destroys the town and kills deputy Oberon. Sheriff Diana Prince sets out for revenge and gathers up a posse to bring justice: Kid Flash, Hawkman, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Martian Manhunter.

Wait, why these characters? Because it's based on the contemporary Justice League line-up. In the late 80s through the mid-90s, "Justice League" mostly starred more obscure characters. That...

Sorry Henry Cavill! Defending Zack Snyder’s Dark Take On Superman Doesn’t Fix Man of Steel’s Problems
Image
The comic book Superman doesn’t need us to defend him, but Zack Snyder’s version of the character in Man of Steel sure does. Like what was that even? In 2013, as Snyder’s darker, more serious take on the character hit the theatres, fans simply lost their minds over how the movie completely altered the character’s essence.

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel | image: Warner Bros

Well, while some loved the fresh, realistic approach, most fans and comic-book lovers felt it stripped away the heart of what makes Superman so special. Soon, with endless debates originating online, Henry Cavill had to defend his character and Zack Snyder’s vision, arguing that his Superman isn’t brooding—he’s just more grounded in reality. But let’s be honest, Cavill’s explanation won’t really fix Man of Steel’s biggest problems.

Marvel Knows One Way to Prevent Bruce Banner From Hulking Out That Is Too Nsfw to Believe
Image
The following article contains discussions of sex and sexual content.

While Bruce Banner has spent his life trying to control the Hulk's violent outbursts, Marvel knows that it takes more than Banner to calm down. Between Banner’s many alters, every Hulk has developed their own tastes and preferences, but there is one tactic that has been shown to be incredibly effective. Unfortunately, this move is likely far too Nsfw for Marvel to ever do again.

As part of an r/comicbooks thread about memorable Nsfw comic moments, several fans cited an incredible example from 2005's Defenders #3 – written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, with art by Kevin Maguire – in which Hulk has an unexpectedly amorous encounter with Dormammu's sister Umar.

After Hulk and his fellow heroes confront Dormammu and his sister Umar, the Hulk is taken captive and made into Umar’s servant, leading to one of the...

Dcu Actor Sean Gunn Explains the Differences Between His and Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lords
Image
Sean Gunn may voice Weasel and G.I. Robot in the animated series Creature Commandos, but regarding live-action, DC fans are going to recognize him as the DC Universe's Maxwell Lord. The character was previously played by Pedro Pascal in 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, although Gunn isn't worried about stepping into the role so soon after Pascal.

During an interview with The Kristian Harloff Show (via X), Gunn opened up about how his take on Maxwell Lord would differ drastically from Pascal's version in WW84. "I can tell you that the one obvious thing is it's me playing the role. It doesn't just mean I'm going to give a different interpretation," the actor started. "Your own body is the vessel for what you're doing, so obviously...no one is gonna confuse me and Pedro Pascal's performance. So we're obviously going to do something different."

Who Is Guy Gardner, and Is He a Green Lantern in 'Superman?'
Image
Quick Links Guy Gardner's DC Comic History Guy Gardner's Role in 'Superman' and the Future of the Dcu

After much anticipation, the trailer for Superman has finally arrived. The trailer is filled with incredible imagery and a powerful new rendition of John Williams's classic Superman theme music. One particular image has caught people's attention, and it isn't Superman, Lois Lane, or even the adorable Krypto. No, it is Nathan Fillion in a terrible bowl cut shooting out a green light from his finger, letting the audience know this is a Green Lantern but not the one most people are familiar with.

Fillion is playing Guy Gardner, a prominent Green Lantern comic series member but not widely known by a general audience. Aside from a brief cameo in Young Justice and a few episodes on the short-lived Green Lantern series, Guy Gardner certainly has not gotten the attention...

The Superman Trailer Reveals Nathan Fillion As DC's Angriest Superhero
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The first trailer for James Gunn's "Superman" is here, but more heroes than David Corenswet's Man of Steel appear. After all, this movie is launching the new silver screen DC Universe. We'd known from previous casting news which heroes would be appearing in "Superman," and the trailer showed some of them in costume. Among them is Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of the many heroes named Green Lantern.

Fillion is a friend of director James Gunn who often appears in his movies. No surprise the actor has a supporting part in "Superman," but Fillion as a Green Lantern is a casting choice that has a lot of history.

In the early 2000s, Nathan Fillion was a popular choice to play Hal Jordan in a "Green Lantern" film; with people even making fanmade trailers with Fillion in the role.

If Booster Gold Is Coming to TV, DC Needs to Check Out 6 Comics Asap
Image
Booster Gold has a reputation for being "the greatest hero you never heard of", but despite his relative obscurity compared to giants like Superman and Batman, he's led plenty of great stories over the years. He got his start as a solo hero and went on to join the founding roster of the Justice League International, shepherding in an enhanced new era for the classic team. Now, Booster Gold is joining James Gunn's Dcu, finally putting this overlooked hero on the map.

With Booster Gold's Dcu debut on the horizon, there are certain stories that should inform how he's written, as they encapsulate his essence more than any others. From his original time-hopping travels to his tenure on different iterations of the Justice League, Booster Gold's decades-long history of superhero endeavors is teeming with potential inspiration for his televised adaptation. The decade was an era rife with experimentation, character deconstruction, fresh ideas and massive events, all of which made it one of the most memorable periods in comics history.

The 1980s produced too many brilliant comic book stories to count, though some stand out ahead of the rest for their lasting impact, well-written stories and stunning art. From character reinventions to tragic deaths, the impact of the '80s cannot be overstated, and some of these stories are required reading even today. James Gunn's DC Universe May Feature A Weird Justice League 'Addiction'
Image
James Gunn is gearing up to start his DC Universe, first with this year's animated show "Creature Commandos" — which will hopefully overcome the limitations of corporate synergy to deliver something unique and visually interesting — and then with the cleanly titled "Superman" in 2025. So far, Gunn has been doing his best to reassure fans that his take on the DC mythos will be respectful to every aspect of the comics — the uplifting, the heartwarming, the funny, the weird, and the silly alike. He's bringing back Jimmy Olsen, while the new Superman suit looks like his mom made it (and even includes the iconic red trunks). Elsewhere, the DC Universe's take on Batman will finally introduce the Bat-family to the big screen in live-action.

Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran seem to be zeroing in on making the DC Universe stand out by starting as close to the feeling...

Sean Gunn Says His ‘Superman’ Maxwell Lord Isn’t Based on Other Live Portrayals
Superman (2025)
Director James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” (formerly “Superman: Legacy) will be packed with DC Comics deep cuts, among them Superman and Supergirl villain Maxwell Lord, played by Sean Gunn.

Maxwell Lord isn’t a particularly well known villain, but he’s shown up in a surprising number of DC Comics adaptations in recent years — Pedro Pascal previously played him in “Wonder Woman 1984,” and Peter Facinelli portrayed him early on in The CW’s “Supergirl.”

TheWrap caught up with Sean Gunn at FanExpo Chicago on Friday, and naturally had to find out how he’s approaching the character. Gunn told us that he isn’t referring back to those earlier portrayals.

“I can’t talk too much about it. I can say that my my brother James and I did discuss… what reference materials from the canon were relevant to to my process,” he said, adding that “I love doing my own music.

After 65 Years, DC Is Retiring the Idea of the Green Lantern Corps - Theory Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Green Lantern #12!

The Green Lantern Corps may be phased out due to recent power manifestations by key characters. Lanterns receive upgrades and artifacts that don't require the Corps' presence for legitimacy. Recent developments raise questions about the necessity of the Green Lantern Corps for maintaining order.

The idea of the Green Lantern Corps may cease to exist in the DC Universe sooner rather than later. Lately, there have been several additions to Green Lantern lore that have not called for the Corps' involvement. For instance, both Hal Jordan and Sinestro have manifested powers without the need of their Lanterns or the Green Lantern Corps as a whole.

As such, the Green Lantern Corps may slowly start being phased out of the DC Universe, with additional evidence arriving in Green Lantern #12's backup story "Guy's Bogus Lobo Adventure Part Three: Places to Be" by Jeremy Adams and Kevin Maguire.

The Justice League Rejected Superman's "American Way" by Recruiting a Beloved Hero

The Justice League chose Animal Man for his commitment to fighting for the planet, not just personal glory or the American Way. During a period without Superman, Wonder Woman, or other big icons, the Justice League embraced lesser-known but worthy heroes. Marvel's X-Men TV Show Can Finally Fix A Powerful Mutant The Original Series Snubbed

Jean Grey's portrayal in the original X-Men series fell short of her Omega-level power status in Marvel Comics. X-Men '97 should correct Jean's weak characterization by showcasing her true potential and strength. X-Men '97 may be hinting at a controversial plot twist involving Jean's pregnancy, mirroring Madelyn Pryor's storyline.

As a revival of X-Men: The Animated series, X-Men '97 doesn't just have the chance to continue the original series but also fix some of its flaws, and it should start with the show's depiction of Jean Grey. Jean Grey's depiction in the original X-Men TV series has become somewhat infamous for the way it portrayed the popular X-Men member, and this depiction has only aged more poorly since the hero has been developed even further in Marvel Comics over the years.

Sinestro continues to be a significant antagonist, with themes of fear and order explored in contrast to Hal Jordan's more nuanced approach, while also giving depth to Sinestro's character.

Things are changing rapidly in Green Lantern’s corner of the DC Universe. The United Planets has assumed control of the Green Lantern Corps and quarantined Earth. Hal Jordan has resigned from the organization he sacrificed his life for. And worst of all, Green Lantern Kilowog is dead after an explosive confrontation with the Sinestro Corps. Needless to say, the writers at DC have a lot to answer for.

Sean Gunn To Play DC Villain Maxwell Lord
Image
Not content with playing one character via :a[The Suicide Squad]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-suicide-squad/' }'s Weasel, it seems Sean Gunn has snagged another. While confirmation has yet to come from director James Gunn, Deadline reports that the younger Gunn (who has played a variety of roles in his brother's work) will pop up in films going forward as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

Lord's origins in the DC comic book universe date back to issue #1 of the 1987 Justice League comic book series, created by Keith Giffen, Jm DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. At first glance, he's a cunning businessman and an ally to the members of the Justice League, who was fundamental in orchestrating Justice League International. His unsuspecting charm even won over characters such as Blue Beetle and the Martian Manhunter.

But then, in Justice League International, issue #12, we learn that Lord had been doing...

Sean Gunn Will Play Maxwell Lord in James Gunn's Dcu
Image
It was inevitable for Sean Gunn to be greatly involved in the Dcu, and now his new role in the new universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran has been revealed.

Per Deadline, Gunn is set to play DC villain Maxwell Lord in the Dcu. As of now, it's not yet clear if Gunn's Maxwell Lord will debut in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy, but he will reportedly be referenced in the background to help set up future appearances. The Dcu will officially kick off in 2024 with the arrival of the animated series Creature Commandos on Max, and Gunn could potentially voice Maxwell if the character makes an appearance in the TV show. In any case, it would seem there are big plans for Gunn's Maxwell in the Dcu, but fans will have to stay tuned.

Sean Gunn To Play Villain Maxwell Lord In James Gunn & Peter Safran’s DC Universe – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: We understand that Guardians of the Galaxy alum Sean Gunn is set to take on the role of evil businessman Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe that’s being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The role was previously played by Pedro Pascal in the 2020 movie Wonder Woman 1984.

It’s not clear if Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord will make a cameo in brother Gunn’s Superman: Legacy which will go into production next year. The character, as I hear it, will be referenced in the background of Legacy but will appear in future DC projects. A similar motif will occur for other characters in the new DC Universe, the first phase which is named Gods and Monsters: Chapter One. Stay tuned.

Maxwell Lord debuted in 1987’s Justice League #1 created by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. Initially conceived as an amigo to the...

Blue Beetle Nails a Vital Part of DC Comics That Other Movies Didn’t
Image
This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.

At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”

A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.

The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

A Memoriam In Four Colours: Keith Giffen
Image
Last week sadly and rather suddenly we lost the great Keith Giffen. There will only ever be one Keith Giffen. He was a creator who as writer and artist has left behind a legacy of amazing comics. He had runs on comics, that are legendary. Runs that inspired the next generation. Runs that reinvented the wheel. Runs that defined characters and still define them today across all media. Runs that included the creation of some of comics greatest and most loved characters. So as Keith pulls his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky we look back on the man behind this outstanding career.

I have to confess I haven’t really read much of Giffen’s work. It is a shame that his passing sees me wanting to rectify the situation. However it does speak volumes about the legacy of work he leaves behind, that I...

Keith Giffen, Comic Book Writer-Artist Behind Lobo and Rocket Raccoon, Dies at 70
Image
Keith Giffen, the veteran comics author and artist who co-created characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.

Giffen’s family announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by the comic book writer-artist: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thankx,’ adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”

His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz. “The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach,” Levitz wrote on Facebook. “Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out.”

Levitz continued, “We did over 60 stories together. Many of them he made far better than they...

Keith Giffen, Comic Book Writer-Artist Behind Lobo, Blue Beetle and Rocket Raccoon, Dies at 70

Keith Giffen, the longtime comics author and artist who co-created popular characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.

His family announced his death Wednesday on Facebook via a sardonic post pre-written by Giffen: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thanx,” adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”

The cause of death is being attributed to a stroke.

Giffen is best known for writing and drawing galaxy-spanning adventure book Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s, at one point making the title one of DC’s top sellers. He was also the artist on early 1980s title Omega Men in which he and writer Roger Slifer introduced Lobo. At first a brutal villain, he was later turned into a parody of overly muscle-bound...

10 DC Villains Perfect For My Adventures With Superman Season 2
Image
As Season 1 of My Adventures with Superman unfolded, fans were stunned to see how the series retooled some iconic DC villains. The likes of Silver Banshee and Heat Wave were made more technology-oriented. Not to mention, Doctor Ivo was retconned into being a Parasite with an Iron Man-like armor.

This helped give the series an anime energy. It led to the Suicide Squad trying to kill Jack Quaid's Clark Kent in the final arc, enhancing the intense, high-octane vibe. Thankfully, Superman's not just able to stave these goons off; he's also able to ward off the military and a Kryptonian invasion by the time the season ends. However, given the essence of the show and some dangling threads, there are other deadly villains that can easily fit the narrative at play.

Harley Quinn Calls Out the Biggest Flaw in Green Lantern’s Lore
Image
Harley Quinn exposes Green Lantern's vulnerability to the color red, suggesting it should be their weakness instead of yellow. The Red Lanterns, fueled by the Red Light of Rage, pose a greater threat to Green Lanterns than the Yellow Lanterns. The comic Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #1 explores and challenges the idea of Green Lantern's weakness to yellow, presenting an alternative viewpoint on their mythology.

Warning! Contains spoilers for Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #1!A piece of Green Lantern's mythology has rightfully been called out by Harley Quinn. While robbing Superman's Fortress of Solitude, Harley pokes holes at the Emerald Knight's infamously outlandish Achilles' heel.

In Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #1's story "The Man of Steal!" by Chip Zdarsky and Kevin Maguire, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have journeyed far to plunder the most secluded of superhero hideouts: the Fortress of Solitude. Though the two are dismayed that Superman...

The One Bat-Family Hero Stronger Than Batman is Finally Confirmed
Image
Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, is a stronger hero than Batman because she accepts her trauma and uses it to become a better hero, even taking up the mantle of Green Lantern. In the two-issue series Jla: Created Equal, Barbara is chosen to explore space and given a Green Lantern ring. Unlike Batman, she is able to use the ring without issue. As the hero Oracle, Barbara helps and saves people on a level she couldn't as Batgirl. Her ability to accept and live with her trauma makes her a stronger hero than Batman.

The entire reason Batman became a superhero was because of the trauma of his parents' deaths, something he admits he'll never truly get over. But one other Bat-Family member proved she is a stronger hero by accepting her trauma and becoming a Green Lantern: Barbara Gordon, Aka the first Batgirl.

When Bruce Wayne's parents were shot...

Superman: Legacy Could Have a Massive Blue Beetle Connection
Image
New rumors around Superman: Legacy emerge seemingly every day, and with the ongoing strikes causing delays in production, there are apt to be quite a few more before the movie itself finally hits screens. The latest is particularly interesting because it focuses on a location rather than a character. Bialya, a fictional nation in the DC Universe along the lines of Corto Maltese, is apparently playing a major role in the upcoming film. Though it has yet to be confirmed as of this writing, it opens up a Pandora's box of possibilities.

That includes a big connection to The Blue Beetle, whose new Dceu movie will presumably raise the character's profile. The character -- at least the original version of him -- has deep connections to Bialya. And while there's no guarantee that any version of the character will appear in Superman: Legacy, the link is too strong to simply ignore.

10 Times the Avengers Dated Their Villains (& It Went Terribly Wrong)
Image
Despite being paragons of virtue as Earth's mightiest heroes, the Avengers have had their fair share of relationships with their villains. But while often being fan-favorite plot lines, these occurrences have always resulted in heartbreak or even physical harm. However, despite the guarantee things will end badly, the Avengers remain constantly susceptible to failures in love and lust.

Here are ten times the Avengers dated their villains, only for things to go terribly, terribly wrong - often with permanent effects on their lore and wellbeing. The only criteria is that they must have at some point possessed Avengers membership and dated a supervillain, and that there's only one entry per hero (otherwise a certain fiery do-gooder would be half the list.)

Dormammu's sister Umar had a brief fling with the Green Goliath during Defenders (2005), which had mixed results. The five-issue miniseries has the creative team of Keith Giffen,...

Justice League Needs Its Most Underrated Team Back From The Dead
Image
As one of DC Comics’ most iconic staples, the Justice League has seen more than its fair share of lineups and iterations. With heroes like Superman and Batman or Wonder Woman and the Flash, it’s no shocker that the League has counted almost every major DC hero among its ranks. But one Justice League lineup is far more beloved than others, and it’s the perfect time for them to return.

With the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths by Joshua Williamson and Daniel Sampere all wrapped up, the heroes of the Justice League find themselves with an incredible opportunity to regroup now that the Titans have agreed to fill-in for them. Though the former sidekicks are strong standalone heroes in their own right, more than capable of replacing the League for good, it’s no surprise that some version of Justice League will eventually return. And when they do,...
