The Slamdance Cinema Club has programmed a one-two punch for punk-rocking cinephiles this Fall. On September 20, "End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones" will screen at the Arclight Hollywood, 8pm. Directors Jim Fields and Michael Gramaglia charts the seminal punk quartet, from their modest roots in Queens to their 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, with breakups, rifts and deaths in between. This first premiered in 2003 at Slamdance, which celebrates its 20th year as Utah's alternative to Sundance. On September 21, Paul Rachman's "American Hardcore," which took five years to make, tunnels through the birth of hardcore punk rock between 1978 and 1986, with underground footage of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains and more. This film also screens at the Arclight, 8pm. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs.
