“Yuddhakaanda: Chapter 2 A Legal Drama With Long Ambitions & Short Vision” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Yuddhakaanda: Chapter 2 in Kannada, directed by debutant Pavan Bhat is a bit of an oddity. It means well. Oh yes, the plea for justice for the disempowered when confronted by the privileged class, is loud and clear.

But much of what transpires in the film seems formulistic, stagey and stilted. A concentrated effort has gone into ensuring that the tone doesn’t too heavyhanded. There is no attempt to portray the brutality with the hurling momento of the Tamil Vijay Sethupathi film Maharaja on child abuse.

More fatally, the plot and the characters seem too close to the recent Telugu courtroom drama, Telugu director Ram Jagadeesh’s State Vs A Nobody which too showed tremendous empathy for the legally challenged victim. In that far more mature film , also helmed by a debutant director, the fledgling lawyer , just like the lawyer in this film, takes on a Pocso case.

Many of the plotting propulsions seem similar,...

This Day That Year: Raj Kumar Hirani’s Underwhelming Sanjay Dutt Biopic Completes Seven Years
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of This Day That Year, looks at Raj Kumar Hirani’s Sanju, which featured Ranbir Kapoor transforming himself into the Sanjay Dutt, in a film that released in 2018.

Raj Kumar Hirani’s biopic Sanju on the controversial star is long on drama, short on facts. It cleverly makes Sanjay Dutt look like a victim of his own naivete. To his credit, Ranbir Kapoor plays Sanjay Dutt with such ardent goofiness and sincerely disingenuousness that I seriously began to wonder if the film’s opening joke—about a bogus biographer played by Piyush Mishra (all people!) likening Dutt to Bapu—had come true.

Raj Kumar Hirani and his writer Abhijat Joshi lay the blame for Dutt’s sordid image squarely on the media. There is a silly newspaper editor played by Prakash Belawadi who is shown as ‘guilty’ of printing an article asking ‘Is Sanjay Dutt Finished?...

Image
Thandel Box Office Opening: Naga Chaitanya Opens With Decent Morning Occupancy (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi‘s Thandel has opened better than the expectations since it was released along with two Hindi releases as well. While the film has registered morning occupancy that is much better than Chaitanya’s last theatrical release, it is performing decent in Hindi as well!

Chai – Sai Vs Junaid – Khushi

Interestingly, the Telugu on-screen romantic pair has surpassed the opening occupancy of the Hindi romantic pair Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor as the Telugu period film surpassed the morning occupancy of Loveyapa!

Thandel Box Office Opening Occupancy

With the morning shows, Thandel registered an opening of 47%. This is a decent number since the film, despite the hype, was not creating enough buzz. However, with the morning occupancy, it could not beat Sankranthiki Vasthunam, Daaku Maharaj, and Game Changer’s occupancy figures!

The directordescribed it as a dangerous thing. “We had quite a shooting experience this season, it was surely a dangerous thing. To ensure that she had something to hold onto, we literally strapped her to the scaffolding kept in the room,” he said.

Nikkhiladded: “And while we were inside the room, shooting and filling it up with water, we didn’t realise the amount of pressure it was exerting on the walls. “Mumbai Diaries Season 2 Is more intricately sketched” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Mumbai Diaries Season 2 (Prime Video)

Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Mohit Raina, Tina Desai, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Satyajeet Dubey, Natasha Bharadwaj, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Prakash Belawadi, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Riddhi Dogra

Directed by Nikhil Advani

Overlooking the rather strange lacuna in the timeline whereby the second season moves from the terror attack of 26/11/2008 to the monsoonal deluge of 26/7/2005, Mumbai Diaries part 2 is a more intricately sketched portrayal of a city under siege than part 1 which suffered from under-developed characters and over-informed plot developments.

By now we know who’s who at the Bombay General Hospital. They need no introduction, and their function within the disembodied domain of injury and trauma is clearly aligned to the crisis on hand. There is more of Konkona Sen Sharma’s Chitra Das this time than Mohit Raina’s Dr Kaushik Oberoi, the head of trauma who seems pretty traumatized himself.

There are tons of trauma to be negotiated...

“Pathaan” Movie Review: Action, Tollywood Style
Image
Pathaan is a fil directed by Siddharth Anand starring Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

Like Rrr and True Lies together at last, it’s neither as good as one nor the other, but with scenes that are so funny, it’s worth it for them alone.

Pathaan Movie Review

Rrr just won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Song. The film deserves it and so does the Indian film industry that sometimes gives us true gems such as this wonderful film. Pathaan takes what it can and a little more that’s borrowed from that one which was such a success that it has created an entire school. The script: identical in structure except that now we are in “spy mode”. This time it’s two characters who don’t get along at first but then join forces to save the world.

Then, True Lies, a wonderful movie with...

Made in Bengaluru review: A delightful ode to the garden city and its startup culture
Image
ReviewPradeep Sastry’s well-intentioned film moves away from snazzy headlines and big money to show you the grit it takes to succeed.Subha J RaoScreengrab: YouTube/ Rajani Thursday StoriesWe regularly read about yet another startup getting a mammoth fresh round of funding, of how venture capitalists and angel investors help make or break ideas, and of home-grown unicorns… Startups are also often the butt of jokes and memes, and Bengaluru even more so, being the hometown of so many of those. But do we pause to think of those who keep trying and never make it? Or of the sheer backbreaking labour and ideation involved in a startup? Pradeep Sastry tries to do just that with Made in Bengaluru, a three-hour ode to the city he so loves. That love is apparent in every frame — it has probably been a while since you’ve seen on screen the garden city...

Movie Review | Vijayanand: Vijay Sankeshwar’s ‘third eye’
Image
Rishika Sharma’s Vijayanad can be called a docu-drama. Earlier we have seen Mani Ratnam helm a (rumoured) biopic of one of the most celebrated business tycoons of India – Dhirubhai Ambani. The film was Guru and featured Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Guru was a very interesting and entertaining biopic and was lapped up by cine-goers. Unlike Guru, Vijayanand is told in a very self-praising documentary manner.

Story

The film opens with Vijay Sankeshwar (Nihal Rajput), a 19-year-old man bringing with him a semi-automatic printing machine for their printing press against his father B G Sankeshwar’s (Ananth Nag) wishes. With the new machine their business flourishes as expected but Vijay begins to aim higher. He prepares himself for yet another business in goods transportation industry and goes ahead buying one truck. This time again against the wishes of his father. Vijay is portrayed as a man with strong will...

Film Review: The House Next Door (2017) by Milind Rau
Image
One of the oldest genre tropes imaginable, the use of the haunted house for a setting, offers up countless scenarios over the ages of people investigating the same old situations. From “The Old Dark House” to “The Cat and the Canary,” “The Uninvited” and “The House of Usher” to “The Amityville Horror” and “The Conjuring” to name just a couple, this timeless quality has brought about some of the best and worst the genre has seen due to so many trying their hand at the concept. Milind Rau is one of the latest to do so with his Tamil-lensed genre effort that falls more on the side of the heavyweights in the scene despite falling just short of the marks it set.

Arriving at their new house, Dr. Krishnakanth Acharya (Siddharth) and his wife Lakshmi (Andrea Jeremiah) are excited to learn a new family has...

Akshay Oberoi
Web Series Review | High: A trip on the wild side
Akshay Oberoi
Fancy a miracle drug that perks up the mind. A little unimaginatively, perhaps, the drug is called Magic, though the name is meant to underline its sheer energising power. A band of do-gooder scientists want to introduce the pill and heal the world, but therein lies the rub.

Rated 18+ Crime Drama High Uncensored Official Trailer Mx Player

https://youtu.be/ml5iIlAGsbg

Pharma giants don't like the idea of a world that is permanently healed by a pill. The drug mafia is irked, too -- what happens to all the ‘maal' if a single pill starts defining bliss?

Director Nikhil Rao and his co-writers (Nishant Goyal and Emil Thomas) create space for ample drama and suspense to sustain a nine-episode saga with that premise. What's more, the series reserves a smart tease for its last scene, leaving you with high hopes about season two.

The screenplay introduces Akshay Oberoi as Mumbaikar Shiv Mathur,...
