National Geographic and Hulu have announced the premiere of the third installment of the Emmy Award-winning, critically acclaimed franchise One Day in America with the Hulu Original Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown.

“The Best” has left us.

Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll, is dead at age 83 after suffering from a long illness. Turner passed away at her home in Küsnacht, outside Zurich, Switzerland.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” Turner’s spokesperson Bernard Doherty said in a statement.

Turner began her career with husband Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm in 1957 and performed under stage name Little Ann before debuting as Tina Turner in 1960 with single “A Fool in Love.” Tina and Ike Turner collaborated on hits “River Deep, Mountain High,” “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” and “Proud Mary” before disbanding in 1976.

Turner went on to launch a career comeback with 1984 hit song “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which won the Grammy for Record of the Year. The track lent its title to a 1993 biopic adapted from Turner’s autobiography “I,...

Brunson and her freshman comedy, Abbott Elementary proved that it’s just simple math as they racked up seven wins at this year’s Black Reel Television Awards. She won four awards on her own as she received Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary and Outstanding Guest Actress for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Brunson triumphed in a surprise upset of the comedy actress category over Issa Rae, the sentimental favorite, in her farewell season of Insecure.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson went from spinning records at last year’s Oscar ceremony to winning a statuette of his own tonight, for directing Best Documentary Feature champ Summer of Soul.

The acclaimed DJ, music historian, and founding member of the Roots – The Tonight Show’s house band – accepted the award along with producers Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein. He began his speech by acknowledging the other nominees for Best Documentary Feature — Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Writing With Fire — then became emotional as he referenced the subject of his film: the long-overlooked Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, a series of concerts that showcased some of the greatest African American musical talent ever assembled on stage. The concerts were filmed at the time, with the intention of packaging them into a TV special, but back then the white-run television networks gave a collective shrug and passed.

Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey’s Moxie Films has partnered with Imagine Documentaries to develop and co-produce a slate of new nonfiction fare.

The partnership with the nonfiction division of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment and Moxie Films is a multi-year agreement.

Headed by Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes, Imagine Documentaries recently co-produced Kennedy’s “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing,” which Bailey wrote and produced. The Netflix docu, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, is an investigation of two Boeing 737 Max crashes that occurred within five months of each other in 2018 and 2019 that killed a combined 346 people. Netflix began streaming the docu on Feb. 18.

Kennedy and Bailey will develop and produce projects with the full resources of the label, which currently has its own first-look output deal with Apple TV Plus and a multi-picture arrangement with Imax for large-format content.

Kathy Comerford was working on the 70th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001 when United Flight 175 flew into the building at 9:03 a.m. She was literally blown out of her shoes. “I was looking for my shoes to get up, so I could get back down the stairs,” Comerford recalled. “I kept thinking this building is not going to take me. There’s no way I’m going [to die]. I’m going home to my kids. But here we are now. Our family now, our motto is, be thankful. Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s not worth it. Embrace the fact there you are here for a reason. I was saved for a reason and many others didn’t have the same luck and fortune.”

Former Assistant Chief of The New York City Fire Department Joseph Pfeifer is among the first responders who have been celebrated and commemorated for their brave actions during the 9/11 attacks. Now, on the historical event’s 20th anniversary, Pfeifer says there’s a “new generation of heroes” worth honoring.

During a TCA panel, where he joined fellow 9/11 first responders and survivors Ron Difrancesco and Jason Thomas, and the producing team of National Geographic’s 9/11: One Day In America, Pfeifer recalled seeing firefighters applaud medical staffers who were on the front-lines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was the moment where 9/11 met the pandemic,” the former Nyfd chief said. “We saw a new generation of heroes. So while we feel things are falling apart we have to take a look where we feel this sense of being together.”

In the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Tina, music icon Tina Turner remarks, “I don’t like to pull out old clothes.”

She’s not talking about her wardrobe.

Turner is referring to distant memories—especially, the abusive relationship with her first husband, rock pioneer Ike Turner, who regularly beat and raped her. It’s not a past she’s ever cared to revisit, yet somehow the public or the media won’t leave it be.

“Why are we so fascinated with this? Why can’t we allow her to move on?” asks Dan Lindsay, who directed the film with T.J. Martin. “It’s definitely a question that we were trying to pose within the film.”

Even Val Kilmer doesn’t consider the movie he produced about his life to be a documentary.

“Val,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this month and begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video Aug. 6, traces his career from his “Top Gun” breakthrough to recent health struggles, incorporating footage from Kilmer’s vast personal archive into the film. His son, Jack, also an actor, supplements his father’s narration, the elder Kilmer’s voice virtually unrecognizable from his heyday as a performer due to treatment for throat cancer.

“Val would say in relation to this film that we are not making a documentary; we’re making a Val Kilmer movie where he’s playing himself as Val Kilmer,” co-director Leo Scott says.

This September will mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. To recognize the significance of that day as well as honor the lives lost, National Geographic is releasing a six-part documentary series, “9/11: One Day in America.” Take a first look at the trailer below.

“9/11: One Day in America” will chronicle the events of September 11, 2001 through gripping first-person narratives of the first responders and survivors who were there. The first trailer should prepare audiences for the first-hand accounts of what they’ll be seeing; it isn’t just hearing the screams and shouts of people on the ground or in the building but, at times, watching debris fall from inside the Trade Center itself.

Each episode will focus on the different levels of heroism people resorted to during the event and boasts never-before-seen footage, including from apartments and streets just after the planes hit.

AFI Docs, the annual nonfiction film festival in the D.C. region, returns on Tuesday as a hybrid of in-person events and virtual screenings, a format mandated by ongoing safety concerns over Covid-19. While the ability to host at least some screenings at the AFI Silver Theater parallels the reopening of movie venues in general, this year’s festival reflects ongoing caution and a deference for health and safety. The selections themselves point more to “personal stories and personal reflections,” in the words of Sarah Harris, the director of programming for AFI Docs, at a time when people are just now rediscovering human connection. “A lot of what the country needs is healing,” Harris said. “We are coming out of the pandemic, coming out of a lot of political trauma in D.C. Altitude and Film4 have acquired writer/director Julia Ducournau’s Cannes Film Festival competition title “Titane” for U.K. and Ireland.

In the horror thriller, following a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the son who disappeared ten years ago.

The film stars newcomer Agathe Rousselle, Cannes best actor winner Vincent Lindon (“The Measure of a Man”), Laïs Salameh (“Le rêve de Mila”) and reunites Ducournau with her “Raw” star Garance Marillier.

Horror hit “Raw” was selected at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2016 and won the Fipresci prize there before going on to global acclaim and awards including the Sutherland award for best first feature at the BFI London Film Festival and a clutch of prizes at Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival.

Film4 and Altitude have co-acquired the film and will collaborate on the theatrical release later this year. Film4 will retain broadcast and on-demand rights in the U.

Oscar winners Dan Lindsay and T.J. World premieres from Disney+, AMC, Startz, Peacock, A&e, OWN, FX and National Geographic are among the highlights of the 2021 Tribeca Festival’s 20th anniversary celebration, announced today.

The events will take place in New York City June 9-20 and claim to be the first major film festival to host in-person events since the worldwide pandemic began.

The Tribeca Festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center.

The festival focus is on new and returning TV series, new indie episodic storytelling, and an industry-facing Creators Market. The Tribeca TV lineup will include nine shows made up of six series premieres, one season premiere, two docuseries, and speaking appearances by Tina Fey, Christian Slater, Joshua Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Helen Hunt.

The Tribeca Festival will also feature a performance by rock icons Kiss.

Tina Turner does not like to talk about herself and her life with abusive ex-husband and artistic collaborator Ike Turner. She notes this in Tina, a new HBO documentary about her life. But she is aware that public interest in it, which is why she has to keep on telling us all about it. This is show business after all, and if she doesn’t, somebody else will. First it was People magazine. Then it was Kurt Loder’s I, Tina. That was followed by a film adaptation, What’s Love Got to Do With It?

One would have hoped that that film would have been the end of it for Turner, her story of abuse and late career triumph captured on film to great acclaim and with an Oscar-worthy performance by Angela Bassett. Nearly 30 years later, however, Tina is back as the subject of T.J. Martin and Daniel Lindsay’s documentary.

Tina reached a total audience of 1.1 million viewers across linear and streaming, WarnerMedia said, in the best showing yet by a documentary on HBO Max.

The Tina Turner portrait, which features a new interview with the singer at her home in Switzerland, is the top-rated HBO documentary since Leaving Neverland in 2019.

Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, who won a Best Documentary Oscar for Undefeated in 2012, co-directed Tina. Also behind the film is Lightbox, the production company founded by Academy Award-winning producer Simon Chinn and Emmy-winning producer Jonathan Chinn. Diane Becker is also a producer. In HBO’s new documentary “Tina,” Tina Turner’s relationship to her abusive husband Ike is fully examined, and at times almost overshadows the larger story about Tina’s prolific career that led to her being dubbed the Queen of Rock ‘N Roll.

Yet throughout the film, Tina barely talks about Ike directly and the parts of “Tina” that tell that story rely heavily on archival footage — and that’s on purpose, a conscious decision by filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, who said they wanted to avoid forcing the 81 year-old rock legend to re-live her traumatic experiences.

BBC, BBC Studios and BMG have confirmed that Brit Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter James Newman will represent the U.K. at 2021’s Eurovision Song Contest after the 2020 edition was postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 65th Eurovision is scheduled for May and will take place in Rotterdam.

Newman’s original entry will be revealed at a later date, and the BBC and BMG will collaborate on the track’s release with BMG handling publishing. BBC Studios will produce the U.K.’s coverage of Eurovision 2021.
