Anne Shirley (2025) by Hiroshi Kawamata Anime Review
Image
L. M. Montgomery’s 1908 novel “Anne of Green Gables” has gained much love in Japan over the years. First translated into Japanese in 1952 by Hanako Muraoka, it has been a part of school curriculums ever since. There is even a replica of the Green Gables farm at an amusement park in Hokkaido. The story of a plucky and imaginative orphan sparked with the Japanese public. In 1979, Nippon Animation produced “Akage no An” or “Red-haired Anne”. This was a 50-episode series directed by future Studio Ghibli founder Isao Takahata. It was also a hit and has appeared more than once on lists of the public’s favourite anime. “Anne Shirley”, produced by The Answer Studio and directed by Hiroshi Kawamata, is a new anime adaptation that looks to bring the classic story to life once more.
