Outside the States: Six Multi-Cultural Horror Movies You Need to Watch
Image
Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.

However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

Interview: Alexis Kendra talks horror ‘The Cleaning Lady’
Image
Ahead of Horror Channel’s premiere of The Cleaning Lady on June 26th, the film’s star, writer and producer Alexis Kendra talks about playing a ‘Goddess’, coping with lockdown and why she can’t watch horror films on her own.

The Cleaning Lady is having its channel premiere on Horror Channel. Excited?

I love you guys. Always have, always will. I’m honoured.

It’s a very disturbing film, dealing with abuse, addiction and hidden rage, yet the characters are sympathetic and have real depth. It’s horror with a twisted heart. As a co-writer, alongside your director Jon Knautz, what were the main challenges in getting the balance right between acting and writing?

I compartmentalize real easy, so if I’m writing, I’m writing. If I’m acting I’m acting. I don’t really mix anything so it’s not that difficult. Keeps me in the present moment a lot.

Daily Dead Salutes Your Shorts: Born Again, Saint Frankenstein, The Cleaning Lady, Abe
Hello once again, Daily Dead readers! Today, we’ve got four more fantastic genre short films that offer up a little bit of everything—killer robots, inept Satanists, obsessed housekeepers, and call girls who get more than they bargained for—as we once again turn our spotlight onto short-form storytelling with an assortment of gut-punch films that we do hope you enjoy.

For this installment of Daily Dead Salutes Your Shorts, we celebrate the recently released Saint Frankenstein from Scooter McCrae, the hilarious Born Again by Jason Tostevin, Rob McLellan’s horror/sci-fi mash-up Abe, and because this writer recently had the opportunity to see the feature film version, this felt like the perfect time to share Jon Knautz’s The Cleaning Lady, which is the short that helped put the wheels in motion for the feature that just recently premiered at Arrow Video’s UK FrightFest.

Q&A: Director/Co-Writer Jon Knautz Discusses The Cleaning Lady
From Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer to The Shrine to Girl House to his latest feature, The Cleaning Lady, filmmaker Jon Knautz has always delivered an intriguing variety of genre stories. He recently celebrated the world premiere of The Cleaning Lady at the Arrow Video FrightFest UK film festival, and Daily Dead had the chance to check in with Knautz about his newest film project, with the director discussing the collaborative process with co-writer and star Alexis Kendra, the relevancy of this story to things currently happening in society, and more.

Can you talk about working on the initial short with Alexis and then the process of taking it from short form storytelling to a full-on feature film?

Jon Knautz: Alexis and I had already written the feature script for The Cleaning Lady and we wanted to shoot a small part of it to help raise financing, so that’s where the short actually came from.

Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 Review: The Cleaning Lady is an Unsettling Exercise in Psychological Horror
From its opening moments where we watch a trapped rat get pureed to pulpy, gooey bits in a blender, it’s clear that co-writer/director Jon Knautz is not messing around with his latest feature, The Cleaning Lady, which recently enjoyed its world premiere in the UK as part of this year’s FrightFest festivities. An expanded take on his short film of the same name, Knautz consistently defies expectations with his often brutal and unforgettable tale of two very different women on a collision course that will forever change their lives in unimaginable ways. Plus, having the film’s star, Alexis Kendra, as a co-writer and a driving creative force on The Cleaning Lady truly makes all the difference here, too.

The Cleaning Lady is centered on Alice (Kendra), who has been trying to cut a couple of vices out of her life, including smoking and her married lover,...

Scarred lives by Jennie Kermode
Alexis Kendra and Rachel Alig in The Cleaning Lady

Alice, a lonely woman trying to break off a relationship with a married man, gets more than she bargained for when she enters into a self-serving friendship with her domestic help in Jon Knautz's The Cleaning Lady, part of this year's Frightfest selection. It's a film with a lot going on beneath the surface, full of sharp observations and with some nicely judged comedy alongside the horror. A few days before the première, I asked Jon how it developed.

"I’ve had the seed of this story in my head for about 15 years," he says. "I had always wanted to develop it but some other project would always end up bogging me down. About two years ago I pitched the idea to Alexis [Kendra, who co-wrote and stars as Alice] and she dug it. She started throwing in her own ideas and we ended up writing the script very.

The Cleaning Lady Review
 – FrightFest 2018
In a genre that’s wound itself around everything from killer clowns to drippy-eyed undertakers, it seems only apt that now we find ourselves with a homicidal house cleaner. Jon Knautz’s lean, mean, Febreze-inspired thriller is a perfect study in delivering exactly what it says on the tin, for both better and worse. What starts as a surprisingly suspenseful stalker movie, with a pair of well-cast and well-written female characters at the helm, very quickly launches itself straight into the genre bargain-bin, with a third-act as generic (and disappointing) as you’d expect from such a no-frills title.

Co-written by and starring Alexis Kendra as a kind, love-addicted beautician, The Cleaning Lady builds itself up around some incredibly sturdy foundations. Kendra’s Alice befriends badly-scarred and socially-removed maintenance worker Shelly (a terrific Rachel Alig), taking her under her wing with everything from extra cleaning work, to lessons in beautification.

The Heretics and Choice (When to Say No to Demon Sex): A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener was provided by the film's pr' firm. Direct: Chad Archibald. Writer: Jayme Laforest. Cast: Nina Kiri, Ry Barret, Jorja Cadence, Nina Richmond and Will King. Black Fawn Films is likely the biggest Canadian indie horror film producer. This film company has completed at least eight titles, in just a few years. Their latest is titled The Heretics and it was written by Jayme Laforest, who also wrote 2015's Bite. Both films deal with body horror and a female protagonist. This title incorporates one of the worst sex scenes, in recent film history. Always say no to demon sex, no matter how attractive the offer is. The story, within the film, deals with the birth of a demon - Abaddon and his desire to end the world. Similar to Jon Knautz's The Shrine (2011), characters are overcome through possession. In The Heretics, this reduces the protagonist's ability to resist evil.

October 2016 VOD Releases Include Phantasm: Ravager, Under The Shadow
While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.

Other notable VOD releases for October 2016 include The Windmill, The Unspoken, ClownTown, Fear, Inc., Vampyres, Halloweed, and Goddess of Love from Jon Knautz (The Shrine, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).

ClownTown (ITN Distribution) – October 4th

Clowntown tells the story of a group of friends who get...

Frightfest 2015 Podcasts: #21 – Goddess of Love
Jon Knautz, director of past FrightFest favourites Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and The Shrine, now invites you to feel the horrendous pain of heartbreak. Enter into a baroque vortex of madness when an emotionally unstable stripper is shattered after being dumped by her boyfriend. Brian was the love of Venus’ life and the thought of him having an affair with another woman begins her volatile descent into the dark side of psychosexual insanity. Co-writer Alexis Kendra plays Venus with startling insight in an erotic thriller that’s sexy and shocking in the super-stylish tradition of Brian De Palma and Roman Polanski.

Nerdly writer and host of the Britflicks podcast, Stuart Wright, speaks to the writer/director Jon Knautz about Goddess of Love, which has its World Premiere at Frightfest 2015 on Monday 31st August at 6.45pm in Discovery Screen 1.

This Goddess of Love is Borne Below: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Dalia Films Production. Tagline: "Be careful who you get close to." Director: Jon Knautz. Writers: Alexis Kendra and Jon Knautz. Cast: Alexis Kendra, Woody Naismith, Elizabeth Sandy and Monda Scott. Goddess of Love is a bit of misnomer. The film's protagonist, Venus (Alexis Kendra), is more of a black widow or a female preying mantis. She bites the heads off of those she loves, figuratively. This film, from Canadian director Jon Knautz (The Shrine), is a very fascinating look at a delusional character. She appears normal and average at first, but her mask comes off at a prominent transition point. Here, the film changes from an erotic thriller into more of a psychological one. The transition is jarring and from here on out the film is a bumpy ride. The steep ups and downs come from the protagonist, whose own perceptions cannot be trusted.

It’s the directorial debut of Trevor Matthews and a feature length script first for writer Nick Gordon. University student Kylie Atkins (played by Rose Byrne’s younger look-a-like Ali Corbin) and her financial woes lead her to taking a job working in the ‘Girlhouse’. A webcam porno website/location crossed with Big Brother’s invasive camera’s in every room – so the punters can get to know the girls for who they are and, you know, fall in love with them. Naturally, her college friend is skeptical but Kylie tells her: “I’m doing this so...

Jack Brooks Director Returns to Horror With Erotic Thriller Goddess Of Love [Trailer]
Sometimes you attach an idea to a director that just takes on a life of its own. That's what's happened to me and Jon Knautz. I really enjoyed Knautz's Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (review). I remember seeing it and recall an image here and there but the movie mostly escapes me now. I have a vague memory of being intrigued by the trailer for The Shrine but I never got around to actually seeing the movie.

A large reason why Knautz has camped out in my subconscious is because he's Canadian and I have a soft spot for home grown talent and it looks like Knautz's extended stay has paid of [Continued ...]...

Goddess Of Love: Trailer Premiere For Jon Knautz's Erotic Psycho Sexual Thriller
After making his debut with horror-comedy hybrid Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer director Jon Knautz heads into much darker territory with his third feature, the erotic thriller Goddess Of Love.Says Knautz about this tale of a dancer turning on her lover when she suspects he's having an affair, "I wanted to make a film that puts the audience inside the mind of the insane so you could experience the story from their point of view rather than watch it from the outside. Glenn Close may seem like the 'bad guy' in Fatal Attraction but what if you experienced the film from her perspective? In her eyes she's not doing anything wrong... and that's just interesting to me. Good or bad is just an opinion of the...
