As Sonic the Hedgehog has been a dominant force at the box office during the holiday season, it has become abundantly clear that the franchise as a whole has become the best video game to movie adaption to date. The bar might seem low, given the fact that so many video game movies tend not to live up to their source material and usually aren't very good, but there are some, every so often, that break the mold.
2006's Silent Hill has been well-received over time by fans, while 2021's take on Mortal Kombat, despite a few nitpicks, was also a step in the right direction. What makes them difficult to get right is that there are usually a lot of backstories to adapt,...

This post contains major spoilers for "Sonic the Hedgehog 3."
The credits scene has become somewhat of a diluted art form over the past decade, with the important revelations of the early MCU days giving way to the more traditional (but less satisfying) mini Easter eggs or final jokes. "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," we're happy to report, is bringing back interesting credit scenes in a big way. Its bonus scene not only teases yet another installment of the franchise to come, but also introduces two characters from the much-loved Sega video game series who have yet to make their live-action big-screen debuts.
In case you blinked and missed it, here's a refresher on the mid-credits scene: Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is suddenly surrounded by an army of Metal Sonics, only to be saved by a hammer-wielding figure who turns out to be none other than pink-tufted icon Amy Rose. Also, Shadow...

"Sonic the Hedgehog" is one of the most iconic video game franchises in history. The property centers on the titular Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with superspeed who battles the evil scientist Doctor Eggman. Created by Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, Sonic debuted in 1991 on the Sega Genesis and gave the company a mascot that could compete with Nintendo's Mario. Quickly, Sonic became a worldwide phenomenon, helping Sega become a major player in the console wars of the early 1990s and even becoming the first video game character to get a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1993.
The media franchise has since expanded far beyond video games, with Sonic starring in his own comic book series, animated TV shows, and, most recently, a series of highly successful live-action movies — movies that helped break the video game adaptation curse. Still, as popular as the...

2020's Sonic the Hedgehog proved video game movies can succeed if the adaptation is faithful to the IP. The film was also a hit because Sonic's CGI design was overhauled following backlash from fans and critics.
Sonic the Hedgehog is leaving Netflix's offerings on Oct. 31. The film was added to the library in September and became an instant hit, ranking in the platform's weekly top ten (U.S.) days after it started streaming. The reception was largely credited to the anticipation for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, slated to premiere in theaters on Dec. 20. The Sonic the Hedgehog films are proving to be a lucrative series, considering how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 outpaced the first film in box office earnings. Still, the 2020 original is credited as the franchise's breakout installment; that film would have bombed if Sonic's initial CGI design wasn't improved for the theatrical release.

Our spiky hero no longer looks like a nightmarish experiment in avant garde taxidermy, but the cool, cuddly mascot we know and love
You can almost hear the sigh of relief from the global Sega fan community. The new Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer, which Paramount released this morning, is a giant improvement.
Our spiky hero no longer looks like a nightmarish experiment in avant garde taxidermy. The human teeth have been extracted. He has big doe eyes, not the sinister mini-peepers of the original trailer. The new design genuinely captures a lot of what original character designer Naoto Ohshima set out to achieve – a cool but cuddly mascot, infusing Japanese kawaii sensibilities with American attitude. His fur is bright, mimicking the famed Sega blue of the company’s classic arcade games. He is no longer absolutely terrifying, an important achievement for a family film.

It’s a game that utilized the best technology available to deliver a fast, colorful, and ambitious experience that showcased Sega’s desire to do what “Nintendon’t.” Sadly, it was also a game that had the great misfortune of being available exclusively for the Sega CD, an “ambitious” CD add-on for the Genesis that promised to deliver more than the console ever could and is considered one of gaming’s more notable hardware failures.
Yet, the most fascinating thing about Sonic CD isn’t the way it so perfectly summarizes why Sega is arguably the most beloved console manufacturer that is no longer making video game consoles. No, the most fascinating thing about Sonic CD is...

Norman Reedus rides down a volcano in Hawaii in fierce cross-winds on this week’s episode of Ride with Norman Reedus — in an experience which he jokes left him “screaming like a girl”. The Walking Dead star said the scene, filmed as he and photographer Patrick Hoelck traveled across the Big Island, felt like a “near-death experience”. It saw the pair struggling to ride as they explored one of the island’s most scenic roads, with winds blasting them from the side. At one point the duo tried to use the van that was being used to film them as shelter...read more...

It's Halloween on the Big Island, when Jerry and Max come out to play.
Yes, that's right, Max is back on Hawaii Five-0 Season 7 Episode 6. (Hopefully that doesn't mean the fill-in M.E. will totally disappear, but she probably will, just like the forensics guy who was crushing on Kono.) Max is refreshed, and newly wed, after his hiatus with Doctors Without Borders.
Even better, continuing his costumes depicting the reputed film legacy of Keanu Reeves, he's stylishly dressed up as John Wick this Halloween.
Max is back in fine form, spouting a mouthful of medical jargon until he finally dumbs it down for his colleagues.
Whatever it is that she saw, it literally scared her to death.

The former Game of Thrones star (and future Aquaman) has been one of hundreds of people protesting on the Big Island these past few weeks in an effort to stop the construction of a telescope and giant observatory on the dormant volcano Mauna Kea. Pixar has revealed the lead character of its next short Lava. Meet Uku, the volcano. He's crusty and known to erupt in bursts of anger at any minute without warning, but he also has a very warm center in this 7 minute musical love story between two mountains. Take a look.
Uku and Lele are two mountains in love in the Pixar animated short Lava, which will have its premiere at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan in August, before being attached to prints of Pixar's next full-length feature Inside Out, in theaters June 2015.
Lava is directed James Ford Murphy, an animator who started working with Pixar on 1998's A Bug's Life. He came up with the idea for Lava more than twenty years ago, visiting Hawaii's Big Island while on his Honeymoon. He explains,
"I thought it would be so cool to fall in love with a place who's also a character.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Pixar Animation Studios is taking the year off. The Emeryville-Calif.-based company will not be releasing a film in 2014, and it also finds itself in an interesting position, striving to maintain its identity as a haven for bold original visions while at the same time seeing some of its biggest successes inevitably move into franchise and sequel terrain. Wednesday night representatives of the studio took over a theater in West Hollywood's Directors Guild of America (DGA) headquarters to present materials from one such original vision from "Monsters, Inc." and "Up" director Pete Docter: "Inside Out." The film is set for release exactly one year from now, on June 19, 2015. Producer Jonas Rivera quipped that such a seemingly long lead is "dog years" in animation time, where projects typically move at a glacial pace for years on end. When he and Docter finished...
