Plot: Scientists discover a duplicate planet in the solar system, and a young student (Marling) has a tragic accident that alters her life and another’s (Mapother).

Who’S It For? Indie sci-fi fans, which means this isn’t filled with special effects, it’s more about the emotional journey and overcoming tragedy.

Expectations: The title is pretty much all I knew. I heard the creepy guy from “Lost” was in it (Mapother).

Chicago – The real strength of the new film “Another Earth” doesn’t necessarily lie in the science fiction aspect of a world appearing in the sky and bearing down on our earth, but in the humanity that is changed and reflected through that event. Director Mike Cahill co-wrote and directed this impressive and imaginative film.

Cahill is a writer, director, producer, cinematographer and editor that got his start as a field producer for National Geographic, making over a dozen films about animals and nature for that cable channel. His directorial debut came in 2004 with “Boxers and Ballerinas” (co-directed and co-written by Brit Marling, his writing partner on Another Earth). His interest in science and his experience shooting thousands of hours of film directly influenced the fragile and delicate atmosphere of his new film.

Chicago – One of the true powers of the new film “Another Earth,” is the essential performance of Brit Marling as Rhoda, the lead character who seeks redemption in the midst of an interplanetary event that shakes up the universe. Her deep portrayal is enhanced by her role as co-writer of the screenplay.

Another Earth gained buzz at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January, winning the Alfred P. Sloan Prize for outstanding film with science, technology or math as a major theme. Brit Marling has been a filmmaker since 2004, often collaborating with Mike Cahill, the director of Another Earth. She was in Chicago recently promoting the film, and sat down for an interview with HollywoodChicago.

The Another Earth Movie Trailer has premiered. Mike Cahill‘s Another Earth (2011) stars Brit Marling, Williams Mapother, Jordan Baker, Flint Beverage, and Robin Taylor. Another Earth‘s plot synopsis: “Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.” Rhoda is brave enough to seek out the person she hurt and whose life she changed forever yet doesn’t have the courage to tell that person what she did. I bet this changes at some point during Another Earth as the guilt of what she has done eats away at her. The back-drop of two Earths is pretty cool plot element.

Fox Searchlight has proven to be one of the most active distributors at the Sundance Film Festival by acquiring its fourth title, Another Earth.

Mike Cahill directed the drama from a script he co-wrote with star Brit Marling. The story centers on Brit Marling's character, an ambitious MIT astrophysics student who kills a man's family in a car accident after she leaned out of the car window to take a look at a newly-discovered planet. She spends four years in jail and then decides to visit the widowed husband and father.

Fox Searchlight acquired the project in a 24-hour auction immediately Another Earth's Monday night premiere. Focus Features and The Weinstein Company were also bidding on rights to the movie.

Another Earth marks the fourth acquisition for Fox Searchlight at Sundance, following Martha Marcy May Marlene, Homework and The Bengali Detective.
