The strangest thing about Sneaks, a new animated movie co-directed by Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins and written by Edwards (Captain America: Brave New World, The Princess and the Frog), isn’t that shoes become sentient beings, but that a stacked cast is squandered on such a plodding and predictable story.
Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Swae Lee, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Bailey and Macy Gray, among many others, lend their voices to the footwear and people that populate this fictionalized New York City. And while their performances are solid, they lack the energy one might reasonably expect from such a talented ensemble.
The issues largely stem from a narrative reliant on, instead of merely riddled with, clichés. A story of a kid trying to achieve his dreams or a reunion between a shoe and his other half need not be deep, but it should feel inspired, whether through the animation or...

The rise of sneakerhead culture has infiltrated every area of style worldwide. What was once limited to sportswear has become a multi-national business. Sneaks takes the basic premise of sneaker culture and anthropomorphizes the very item being collected. Like Toy Story or Cars, the animation team develops unique ways to bring everyday items to life. While the attempt to highlight sneakerhead culture, and by extension, Black culture, is well-intentioned, the stylized animation does not always hold up its end of the bargain. It makes Sneaks a fun but ineffective experience for adults. Kids will likely still find something to enjoy, but it could drive parents crazy.

Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to director Rob Edwards’ sneaker-themed animated movie Sneaks, voiced by Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Bailey, and Grammy-winning producer Mustard.
Pic also features Grammy winners Roddy Ricch, Ella Mai and Macy Gray, with five-time nominee Swae Lee, Quavo and NBA star Chris Paul also joining the cast. Paul plays himself, hosting a Met Gala-like event for avid sneakerheads seen in the film.
The family movie follows a pair of one-of-a-kind, collector sneakers, Ty (Anthony Mackie), and Maxine (Chloe Bailey), stolen by ‘the Collector’ (Laurence Fishburne). In their attempt to escape, Ty ends up separated from his sister in the middle of NYC. Alone, and desperate to find her, Ty meets with Jb (Martin Lawrence), a streetwise, scuffed up sneaker with an affinity for anything shiny, learning that your best life begins when you get out of your box.

Jhené Aiko had worked out the kinks — likely unnoticeable to most fans — of The Magic Hour, her first tour in seven years and her first-ever arena run, by the time she sold out Barclays Center in Brooklyn this month. (In fact, all the dates on her 13-stop headlining trek have sold out.) Aiko has been a staple among R&b’s moodiest, freakiest, and wanted-to-fight-you-but-decided-to-meditate-instead listeners since her 2011 debut mixtape, Sailing Soul(s). She staked her claim to modern R&B while being a young mother to now-15-year-old Namiko,...

Music fans can subscribe to the concert platform for as little as $11.99 per month.
There is nothing like being at a venue, crammed together with hundreds or thousands of fellow sweaty revelers, screaming the lyrics to your favorite song at the top of your lungs. Now, whether the fact that there is nothing like attending a sold-out concert is a good thing or not will clearly vary by person. However, if you love a good show, but don’t always enjoy the experience of trekking to the club or arena, paying to park, and dealing with the hoards of people, then Veeps might be right up your alley; and thanks to a recent announcement, the streamer is making it even easier to get all of the concert action you could want

You might not know who Cautious Clay is, but you’ve most likely heard his music. He’s behind the perky beat that drives Taylor Swift’s “London Boy”, the multimillion-streamed tribute to her boyfriend Joe Alwyn’s hometown, and the remix of “Ocean Eyes” – Billie Eilish’s breakthrough single – which was commissioned by her brother and co-writer, Finneas. There’s a good chance you’ve heard him in films or on TV, too. His 2018 debut “Cold War”, which melded a Frank Ocean level of introspection with gospel harmonies and slick pop production, cropped up in the soundtracks for both Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Issa Rae’s acclaimed comedy-drama, Insecure. The lyrics are astute, the arrangements complex: his songs are gorgeous reflections on his own shortcomings.

The School For Good & Evil has so many popular songs on its soundtrack that it's challenging to remember them all. The Netflix #1 movie boasts tracks from artists such as Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, with names as big as the actors in The School's stellar cast. An epic battle sequence is choreographed to an ambitious cover of Britney Spears's "Toxic." The list goes on.
Music is a big reason The School For Good & Evil works as well as it does. The creative team effectively uses the right songs to draw their target YA audience, and the movie has reached the top of the chart despite mixed critical and popular reactions. Theodore Shapiro's lively, nimble score makes the music a major player in scenes throughout the film, driving action, building tension, or quieting the pace as needed.

The producer Ricky Reed is joined by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and the rising singer Duendita on the regretful ballad “Us (How Sweet It Was).” While the plaintive keyboard and yearning lines from James — “If I had only known how long I wouldn’t see you” — reach back to gifted Seventies balladeers like Todd Rundgren, the smears of autotune and click-pop drum programming ground this song in the present. Duendita adds her own handsomely multi-tracked vocals, quietly commanding the second half of the song.

Netflix has opted not to renew for a second season All About the Washingtons, its multi-camera comedy series starring Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons & Justine Simmons. The decision comes two months after the release of the series’ 10-episode first season, which didn’t seem to get a lot of traction.
Created by Jeremy Bronson (The Mayor), All About The Washingtons had a twisty road to the screen. The pitch originally landed at ABC in fall 2016 with a put pilot commitment. It did not get a pilot order, but, believing in the concept and the talent, producing companies Amblin TV and ABC Studios pulled together resources and used the penalty money to finance a pilot presentation. The presentation was well received by ABC brass but the broadcast network only picked up three new comedy series that year, including Bronson’s The Mayor, and got out of the multi-camera comedy business all together.
