Over the years, Cinderella has had many adaptations. The folk story of a young girl living in unfortunate circumstances and blessed with a life-changing decision after marrying has been around for centuries, although it's mostly famous thanks to the Disney adaptation.

Cinderella was adapted into opera, theater, musicals, films, and TV. Walt Disney entered the conversation in 1950, giving the character, who is now considered one of the Disney Princesses, her first adaptation. Jennifer Lopez has been interested in a new version of the story for years, and she is now partnering with Disney+ for a new version, Deadline reports.

Lopez has been attached to the limited series based on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella since May 2022. The singer and actress' production company, Nuyorican Productions, was working with Skydance Television and Concord Originals. The same production companies are still attached to the project, which has now officially landed at Disney+.

We understand there was a bidding war between Disney and Amazon for the project, which is from the perspective of the fairy godparents. It is written by Rachel Shukert, who is still attached as EP and showrunner.

The UTA-repped Shukert is an EP on Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, as well as an EP on the streamer’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and the showrunner of Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club.

In addition to Shukert, executive producers include Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions; Sophia Dilley, EVP of Concord Originals and co-president of Rko; former Concord CEO Scott Pascucci; and Bill Bost.

Amongst Hillary Duff and Stephen Sondheim songs, a new comedy-horror has entered the world of Cinderella re-tellings. Written and directed by Emile Blichfeldt, “The Ugly Stepsister” is a grim but charming tale of Cinderella through one of the stepsisters’ points of view. This sister’s name is Elvira, and in addition to the story being told from her point of view, it revises the character’s disposition. Blichfeldt uses Elvira to represent the waning deterioration of a girl’s innocence under a monarchical patriarchy.

The concept alone is delightfully insightful, given that the classic Cinderella story is associated with adolescent girlhood, making for exceptional source material. It would be easy to lean into a cliche parody with this adaptation, but it is delightfully elaborate with its approach, even while still incorporating humour. Despite the deep, endless well of adaptations, this film managed to float to the top with its exceptional quality and premise.

When "I Know What You Did Last Summer" debuted in 1997, it was met with a mixed reception by critics, but brought in a Billy Blue-sized boatload of cash at the box office. A $17 million shooting budget nabbed $125.3 million before enjoying a sizable chunk of change thanks to the still-booming home video rental market. A sequel was inevitable, and just over a year later, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" hit theaters. Although boasting a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't something to write home about, it was still a financial success.

Unfortunately, the sequel's less-than-stellar reception didn't help launch the series into a formidable franchise. The direct-to-video sequel "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" arrived nearly a decade after the party was over, and the Prime Video series adaptation from 2021 was canceled after just one season.

Lionsgate has upped Erin Westerman to president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

This was to be expected in the wake of the news that Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane is departing at year’s end for a producing deal with the studio. Westerman was previously president of Motion Picture Production.

Minnie Driver (Cinderella), Jeffrey Donovan (Fargo) and 9-1-1: Lone Star alumna Natacha Karam have been tapped as leads in the first installment of The Faithful, Fox’s six-episode Biblical limited series from Carol Mendelsohn, Rene Echevarria and Fox Entertainment Studios.

Driver will play Sarah, Donovan will portray Abraham and Karam is set as Hagar in Part 1, which will be directed and executive produced by Danny Cannon. The Faithful will premiere Sunday, March 22 and air in three, two-hour installments leading into the finale on Easter Sunday, April 5.

Bobby Sherman, the former teen star who appeared in Here Comes the Brides and recorded the Billboard Hot 100 hits “Julie, Do You Love Me” and “Little Woman,” has died. His wife, Brigitte Poublon Sherman, confirmed his death in a statement shared on social media by their family friend, actor John Stamos. Sherman was 81 years old.

Bobby Sherman, a singer and actor who became a quintessential shaggy-haired teen idol of the late 1960s and early ’70s, died Tuesday at age 81.

His wife, Brigette Poublon Sherman, had announced three months ago that the entertainer had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

In posting the news of his death to Instagram Tuesday morning, Poublon Sherman wrote, “It is with the heaviest heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Bobby Sherman. When it comes to Bridgerton's Yerin Ha, the actress shared which two pieces of her character, Sophie Baek, allowed her to slip into character for the upcoming fourth season of the Regency-era Netflix drama. In an interview with Glamour, Ha revealed that it's "Sophie’s apron and headpiece immediately put me in her mind space." She says, "just having the weight of that on my head helps me get into her character." The upcoming season of Bridgerton will adapt the third book in the Julia Quinn book series: An Offer From a Gentleman. Ha is Season 4's leading lady, opposite Luke Thompson returning as Benedict Bridgerton.

Netflix has celebrated Bridgerton season 4's production wrap with a new BTS video, featuring a blink-and-you'll miss-it detail about Penelope's continued role in the story. Bridgerton season 4 will finally put second son Benedict (Luke Thompson) in the romantic spotlight, as he falls in love with a mysterious masked woman at his mother's famous masquerade ball. Though Benedict and his Cinderella-esque love, Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), will be the biggest focus of Bridgerton's and London's upcoming season, the rest of the Bridgerton clan will still have their parts to play, too.

This includes Nicola Coughlan's Penelope, who found her happy ending with Benedict's younger brother, Colin (Luke Newton), in Bridgerton season 3. Star Trek’s Captain Kirk has always been the symbol of masculinity in the ‘60s era. The way he talks and takes charge was seen as a representation of the ideal man of that age, and William Shatner’s performance added a lot to this identity. So, when Chris Pine came into the role, he tried to do his best to break it and not make it toxic.

Preity Zinta poses as a modern-day Cinderella with a very posh British-Indian fiancee. Bobby Deol, a nerd-optician poses as a cyber-Superman.

Lara Dutta, God bless her luscious presence, is a tart masquerading as a prima donna. Director Shaad Ali poses as an auteur with the wickedly audacious sense of humour of a comic-book aficionado. While the audience, not to be left behind, is supposed to pretend that it finds the bizarre goings-on hilarious.

Though we've yet to see anything particularly revealing so far, Masters of the Universe supporting cast members have been sharing behind-the-scenes photos from their time working on the live-action adaptation to social media, and we now have a teasing first glimpse of Sam C. Wilson as one of He-Man's most recognizable foes, Trap Jaw.

As you can see, Wilson only posted a close-up shot of his eye, but the image does confirm that Skeletor's "Wizard of Weapons" will retain his green-skinned face (whether he'll also have the blue body remains to be seen) from the original animated series.

Subhash K Jha revisits Mohit Suri’s Hamari Adhuri Kahani, which released in 2015 and starred Emraan Hashmi, Rajkummar Rao and Vidya Balan in this edition of his series This Day That Year.

Mohit Suri’s film about love during times of no red or green flags was mauled, lynched, and savaged. Looking back at the film, I feel compelled to wonder why it has been so violently rejected by critics. Could it be because the film raises some uncomfortable questions and issues related to an India that we’ve blanked out of the shining new India that we want the world to see?

This other not-so-shining India subsumes a societal structure based on and run by rules of gender inequality, where girls grow up accepting themselves as the second sex. This is not to say that this line of thought in the patriarchal set-up is in any way morally desirable.

I grew up with Disney. You probably did too. And if you did, then you’re familiar with the drill: be cute, sing about your dreams, suffer a bit, then Bam, true love’s kiss and happily ever after. I mean, Ariel basically sacrificed her voice for a guy she saw once. Just once! Cinderella? She got a makeover, danced for three hours, and now she’s a queen. Belle fell in love with a furry guy with anger issues.

Netflix's The Hunchback of Notre Dame movie, titled Quasimodo, has reportedly found its Quasimodo and will begin filming this summer. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is originally the 19th-century gothic novel by Victor Hugo (also the author of Les Misérables) about a bell-ringer at the famous at Paris’ famous Notre Dame cathedral who falls in love with the Roma dancer Emserelda. Today, the most well-known adaptation is arguably the animated version by Disney, which significantly changed the story from the source material to be presented to the typical family-inclusive audience.

While Disney previously had plans for its own Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action remake, which would presumably be based on the studio's own movie, Netflix is working on Quasimodo and has just announced that Vincent Cassel will be taking on the lead role (via Deadline). Cassel will thus be collaborating with Jean-Francois Richet as the director and Eric Besnard as the screenwriter.

According to a recent report in the Moscow Times, Russian lawmakers have targeted Shrek, the ogre, for potential censorship after he was deemed to be having a "destructive impact" on Russian children. Shrek was a monstrous character first introduced in the 1990 picture book "Shrek!" by William Steig. The book was adapted into a satirical feature film in 2001, altering Steig's story into a pointed anti-Disney story about fairy tale characters who become victims of forced relocation. Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers, was the antihero forced to perform heroic tasks in order to get other fairy tale creatures out of his yard. "Shrek" was an enormous success, and spawned a massive media franchise that remains active to this day; "Shrek 5" is due in theaters in 2026.

Fantasy and animation are a perfect match that, for whatever reason, Hollywood has yet to fully tap into. Sure, there are plenty of animated fairy tale movies; they used to be Disney's bread and butter, after all. However, when it comes to more serious, high fantasy animated films, they are severely lacking, with "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" being the rare exception (one that married the epic "Lord of the Rings" universe with anime).

This is not to say there aren't other examples, but they are rare enough that any announcement involving a new animated fantasy movie is exciting. Case in point, Warner Bros. Animation and Locksmith Animation are working to bring Marissa Meyer's best-selling book series "The Lunar Chronicles" to the big screen as a trilogy of animated features — and the first book already has a release date.

This is an interesting move on behalf of Warner Bros.

British visual artist Es Devlin, who has worked with U2 and Beyoncé, will serve as a production designer on the fantasy adaptation of The Lunar Chronicles, which Warner Bros said on Monday will release on November 3, 2028.

Warner Bros Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation are partnering on the feature, based on Marissa Meyer’s book series. Noëlle Raffaele, a story artist on The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Marvels, will direct and the producer is Christina Steinberg, whose credits include the Spider-Verse films and Rise Of The Guardians.

The screenplay is by Lindsey Ferrentino and writing partners Kalen Egan & Travis Sentell.

The Ogre's Bride novel and manga series today announced the series will be adapted into a TV anime. The series is set to release volume seven of the manga on June 13 in Japan. No further details about the TV anime such as the staff, cast nor release date was revealed at the time of reporting.
