The nut house. The loony bin. Whatever your term for it, we all know it well... the insane asylum. It is one of the more unsettling settings in which a horror film might play out. To celebrate the December 31st release of Image's Sanitarium, we bring you our Top 11 Insane Asylum Horror Films.

As far as honorable mentions, one of my all-time favorite horror moments is in the insane asylum at the end of Psycho when Norman has completely become Mother. As the scene is very short, we kept it off the list and simply gave it an Hm.

Earlier this month the psychological horror anthology Sanitarium premiered during the Miami International Film Festival.

Directed by Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama and Bryan Ortiz, Sanitarium consists of three segments based on the particular patients of a mental institution that's being overseen by the sinister Dr. Stenson (Malcolm McDowell), who acts as the navigator through each chilling story.

With elements from "The Twilight Zone," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Creepshow," and "Tales from the Crypt," Sanitarium explores the different narratives of the insane patients and the tales which led to their crazed states of minds. I remember seeing Malcolm McDowell speak at Lindenwood College a couple of years ago. Someone in the audience asked him about some Dtv thriller he had starred in. He just gave a blank look and said “I don’t remember anything about that movie!”

Well, I doubt he’ll forget about Sanitarium because it looks so darn scary!

Sanitarium is an anthology that consists of three segments based on particular patients of a mental institution, and.will be having its World Premiere on March 1st at the Miami International Film Festival. The horror anthology is back in a big way, and Sanitarium is the newest offering on the list. Premiering March 1, the anthology features three stories of madness from directors Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama and Bryan Oritz.

The half-hour tales kick off with Dr. Stenson, the physician at the Sanitarium, who guides viewers through the sanitarium relating tales of each patient’s specific madness.

I'm a sucker for horror anthology films like Creep Show, Black Sabbath, Tales from the Darkside, V/H/S, and S-vhs. If you are too, here's a red-band trailer for an interesting looking new horror anthology called Sanitarium. 

The movie features segments directed by Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama, and Bryan Oritz. Sanitarium has debuted a red band trailer.

The horror anthology features three segments introduced by Malcolm McDowell's head doctor.

The tales explore the nature of madness and reality in the halls of the psychiatric hospital.

Nightmare on Elm Street star Robert Englund also features in the movie alongside John Glover, Lacey Chabert and Lou Diamond Phillips.

Directors Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama and Bryan Oritz have united to helm the different segments of the film.

McDowell was recently seen in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

Sanitarium will make its world premiere at the Miami International Film Festival on March 1.

With V/H/S, V/H/S 2, and The ABCs of Death leading the way, the horror anthology format is gaining a significant amount of momentum and now Sanitarium directors Bryan Ramirez, Kerry Valderrama and Bryan Oritz are looking to get in on the craze, too.

Malcolm McDowell’s Dr. Stenson is at the center of the trilogy, serving as the film’s wraparound component. As the lead physician responsible for the patients at the Sanitarium, Dr. Stenson will offer commentary at the top of each of the three tales and then go on to further explain how their troubles with hallucinations, imaginary voices, alternate realities and more landed them in his care.
