Daphne Alexander: A Journey of Talent, Passion, and Versatility
Image
Daphne Alexander is a Cypriot actress whose career is a testament to her versatility, passion, and enduring connection to her roots. Seamlessly transitioning between high-profile productions by BBC, Netflix, and HBO, as well as theater and alternative projects, Daphne continues to evolve as a performer while maintaining a deep appreciation for her Greek heritage.

The Building of a Character: A Never-Ending Process

Upon meeting Daphne Alexander, one is immediately struck by the rare combination of talent, natural beauty, and an inner calmness that defines her presence. She embodies grace and authenticity, making meaningful connections with those around her both on and off the screen.

Her recent work in Minore, a dark action comedy that diverges from conventional narratives, brought her back to Thessaloniki for the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. The film, directed by Konstantinos Koutsoliotas, blends traditional Greek music with the otherworldly, resulting in a unique and “insane” experience that Daphne embraced with enthusiasm.

The onset of Folk Horror with its rich heritage of tales, mysteries and events from countries is a fountainhead for art, film and literature. Many like my own which is Canada has failed to use the huge amount of material that abounds likely out of prejudice or frankly poor judgment for the all-important Box office appeal. That is why it was such a pleasure to view this Greek-produced monster/comedy film Minore (2023).

This wonderfully photographed tapestry of terror by Konstantinos Koutsoliotas’ is a visual and auditory feast reminiscent of Cronos (1992) by Guillermo Del Toro. It’s summer on the Mediterranean coast when strange fog descends on a laid-back port town in Greece, causing its inhabitants to experience visions causing them to sleepwalk into the sea. Turns out that small, multi-limbed monsters reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu have invaded the town. These little beasties fly, grab, tear off heads, and...

An Island of Manhunters in Survival Action Thriller 'The Hunted' Trailer
Image
"Europe is a tough place. And only the strongest of you will make it there." Voltage Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a Belgian horror thriller survival film called The Hunted, made by French filmmaker Louis Lagayette. This seems to be a promo trailer to attract buyers more than for audiences, since there's no release dates set. After their boat capsizes in the Mediterranean Sea, a group of refugees are rescued by rich Europeans who offer them shelter on an idyllic island. But the miracle soon becomes a nightmare when the saviours turn into ruthless manhunters. So this is a campy modern twist on "The Most Dangerous Game" story, involving refugees who get turned into the prey when they're taken to a private island. Scary! Starring Lily Banda, Alec Newman, Mylène Jampanoï, Raj Bajaj, Vassilis Koukalani, Aurora Marion, & Daphne Alexander. It's a bit of a manipulative concept, but the...

Frightfest 2023: ‘Minore’ Review
Image
Stars: Davide Tucci, Efi Papatheodorou, Daphne Alexander, Apollon Bollas, Igor Górewicz | Written by Konstantinos Koutsoliotas, Elizabeth E. Schuch | Directed by Konstantinos Koutsoliotas

I’m not sure I was quite prepared for how strange Minore is. That is definitely a good thing though. I will keep my review as spoiler-free as possible because it really is the best way to see the movie.

That said, it doesn’t give anything away to say that a mysterious sea creature is lurking in the sea of a nearby town ready to invade. Its unsuspecting occupants are an unusual group of tourists, musicians, body-builders and the elderly who must fight off this creature.

After about thirty minutes of Minore, I think it’s fair to say not a whole lot had happened and I didn’t realise at that point that it was a comedy. I’m not sure if this is because it...

He's a veteran from the VFX industry, having worked on big movies like Dark Phoenix, 1917, West Side Story, Nightmare Alley as a digital compositor. This first premiered at the Fantaspoa Fantastic Fest earlier in the year. When mysterious creatures invade a Greek seaside port, a misfit band of musicians, tourists, bodybuilders, and grannies unite to save the city. "As Greek as monster movies get." This trailer features a sneak peek of the awesomely tentacled mega monster in this quirky horror comedy, and it looks super badass. Playing at London's FrightFest and Mexico's Macabro Fest soon. Creep Out Your Ears by Listening to ‘Hammer Chillers’
Hammer made a nice little comeback last year with The Woman in Black. While I wasn’t the hugest fan of the film, I dug the atmosphere it brought to audiences. It also felt like British Horror, something I admired even more. Hammer has created six audio dramas that vary from 30 to 45 minutes each and will be released in a digipack later this week. If you order the digipack, you will get the audio files immediately. You can also buy the tracks individually if you want to give one of them a listen. Between this and Tales from Beyond the Pale, it’s nice to see horror audio making a comeback. We have included toggles below which include synopses & links below.

Check out all the Audio Dramas by clicking here The Box Synopsis
