An Iconic 23-Year-Old War Movie is Streaming For Free Next Month
Image
Director Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down was a standout release in a decade overwhelmed by a wave of war movies. The 2000s saw a revival of the genre spurred by the success of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line in the late 90s.

Tubi adds Black Hawk Down to its film library this November. Ridley Scott's war drama joins blockbuster features Edge of Tomorrow, Furious 7, Tomb Raider, The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, and more. Tubi will also stream Full Metal Jacket and The Patriot for free, expanding viewing options for fans of war movies. Black Hawk Down is a standout release of the 2000s for its visceral depiction of a real-life war story. Based on journalist Mark Bowden's non-fiction book, the film is a dramatization of U.S. Task Force Ranger's foiled attempt to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid in October 1993.

A Washington state resident pleaded guilty this week to a felony count of conspiracy connected to an alleged scheme concocted by him and a former Deadspin editor to trespass into computer systems used by a sports league and several news organizations.

Appearing in federal court and speaking through his attorney on Monday, 24-year-old Marco Gaudino said he understood the conspiracy allegedly involving journalist Timothy Burke was a crime, and he was willing to accept full responsibility for his actions.

In exchange, federal prosecutors have agreed to not pursue additional computer hacking charges against Gaudino, and will ask a federal judge overseeing his case to punish him to the lower end of the sentencing guidelines, which could see him earn little to no prison time.

A conspiracy conviction typically...

Why Phillip Did That To Natalie In Chicago Med
Image
Natalie falls for Phillip's manipulation, believing they are engaged due to a traumatic brain injury. Phillip skips town when his lies are uncovered, leaving his infant daughter behind. Will and Natalie's romantic tension intensifies throughout the series, leading to a complex relationship.

Phillip Davis (Ian Harding) is a recurring guest character in Chicago Med who has a complicated history with Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). Chicago Med is another in a long line of Dick Wolf TV shows and follows the doctors and nurses of the emergency department at the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Like many of these procedurals, the personal lives of the characters are of as much interest as their tense and critical professional lives. Characters have relationships and romantic tension with people inside and outside the main cast.

One of the most popular characters in Chicago Med is Natalie Manning, an attending physician who specializes in pediatrics. Natalie has an on-again,...

‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ Among Top Artisan Awards Season Contenders
Image
This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.

Makeup And Hair

Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

How The Little Mermaid's Underwater Scenes Were Filmed
Image
The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid used CGI to create its underwater scenes and bring the sea life to life, including characters like Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder. Filming underwater was deemed too challenging and impractical, so the production used blue screens and nautical footage as inspiration to create the ocean scenery. Despite using CGI, the filmmakers faced challenges in ensuring that it all looked realistic, all while keeping true to the beloved original film.

Based on the 1989 animated feature of the same name, 2023's The Little Mermaid used different moviemaking techniques to create the underwater scenes in what was one of Disney's most ambitious live-action remakes. Although the live-action Little Mermaid was a box office letdown and received only modest reviews, the movie was one of the most important blockbuster releases of 2023. The differences between the original The Little Mermaid movie and the remake, as well as how the...

Chicago Med Recap: How the Finale Didn't Write Out Connor and Ava — Plus, Is [Spoiler] a Goner?
Colin Donnell
If we didn’t know any better, we might have mistakenly assumed that Connor and Ava are sticking around after Wednesday’s Chicago Med. The season finale — which marks stars Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling’s final episode — doesn’t provide a ton of closure for the exiting characters, whose complicated relationship only gets more messy in the episode.

After Nina informs Connor that his dad died from an overdose of synthetic insulin, the doc is back to giving Ava the suspicious eye during surgery on Phillip’s daughter. After the operation, Ava once again reaches out to Connor and offers her condolences.
