“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.
Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.
“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”
Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

From director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), Oddity tells the story of a female psychic attempting to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder by returning to the scene of the crime.
Oddity is all about its atmosphere. Thankfully the filmmakers have clearly put a lot of effort into creating this part of the movie, whether it be through camera work, sound design, the score, or the placement of jump scares. It all feels incredibly well thought out.
I’m sure many people viewing it will see it as one of the scariest films they have ever seen and that claim would be justified. It does an excellent job of building up two or three really good jump scares. And even knowing that doesn’t hinder the moments because you...

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

The horror genre is currently thriving and showing no signs of slowing down, which can only be a good thing for gore-hounds the world over. 2024 has already seen iconic performances such as in the unnerving Nicolas Cage horror movie Longlegs, plus Demi Moore in one of the most superb body horror movies ever to have been unleashed; The Substance. However, some of the very best movies from the horror genre over the last 10 or so years have come from a previously unlikely source; Ireland.
The Emerald Isle's movie scene has been thriving for decades and films such as the energetic and deeply engaging Kneecap, are a testament to its quality. However, it was in the early 2000s that the horror scene in the country began to flourish. Compared to the mainstream content audiences have to enjoy every week, Irish horror movie output is still relatively fledgling, but Irish horror is...

As a visionary modern horror filmmaker, Mike Flanagan's views on the genre are well worth listening to. Through his work in both film and TV, Flanagan has used horror to explore personal and emotional stories. Films like Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor have wonderful intersection and character work, while never losing sight of what makes the genre great, and providing the audience with genuine scares. However, beyond being scary on their own terms, Flanagan's projects invariably demonstrate his respect for the broader genre and reveal several major influences.
Flanagan has a love for all types of horror, from ghosts to vampires, and everything in between. The director has consistently shown appreciation for all kinds of things that go bump in the night, both in his own films and through the kinds of movies he recommends. In external interviews and on his own social channels,...

Alas, the end of 2024 is drawing closer, and another Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, waits in the wings of 2025.
This particular prequel is an exciting prospect for the keen and savvy book readers out there.
Given what we know of the books, Max’s latest outing (Max is on a roll heading into 2025) should easily develop into a multi-series story.

The second season of House of the Dragon is over and we likely won't see season 3 until sometime in 2026. But we will get to revisit Westeros before that. Next year, HBO will debut a new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an altogether smaller story than we saw in either Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. There's no massive war afoot; there's just a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminuitive squire Egg, who wander the Seven Kingdoms having adventures. The first season will be based on Martin's story "The Hedge Knight," which begins with Dunk entering himself into a tournament in Ashford Meadow in the Reach. There he'll meet a variety of characters, including a member of...

Oddity blends horror and paranormal elements to create a genuinely creepy and unsettling experience. The cast's performances amplify the stakes of the story, keeping viewers on their toes. The film successfully blends horror with a compelling mystery, engaging the audience from start to finish.
The paranormal and the horror mix together in Oddity , creating an authentically hair-raising experience that is as unsettling as it is terrifying. Not only does the horror film infuse its story with mystifying elements, but it injects it with domestic complications that make for an intriguing storyline. Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, Oddity had me at the edge of my seat, even in its most predictable moments.

Seeing double? Well, someone in Oddity isn't seeing at all, but that won't stop her from literally taking names seeking the truth, justice, and a whole lot more. It's a wild tale that showcases the vast talents of Irish actress Carolyn Bracken (star of the Oscar-nominated The Quiet Girl) as twin sisters, one of whom meets her fate too darn early and thus kickstarts a wild ride that will tickle the fancies of horror-thriller fans everywhere.
Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, Oddity may take a wee bit too long for its revenge-karma tale to get off the ground, but once its twisty story levitates into the nailbiting second and third acts, you'll be begging for more by the time the credits roll. IFC Films seems to be scooping up quite a few innovative scary projects these days, following the terrific In a Violent Nature earlier this year. And now,...

With Caveat, Damian McCarthy layered mystery upon mystery to create a haunting thriller about isolation. The Irish filmmaker’s latest, Oddity, follows a similarly twist-laden blueprint. The plot exudes a pulpy sense of escalation, defined by a collision of convoluted story threads that might, in lesser hands, have devolved into unintentional comedy.
After all, the central image of Oddity verges on the ludicrous: a horrible wooden mannequin planted at the head of a dinner table, mouth frozen in a silent scream. The ornament belongs to Darcy (Carolyn Bracken), the blind, silver-haired twin sister of Dani (also Bracken), who was murdered while renovating the very house that Darcy visits not long into the film. The apparent culprit was a mental patient, Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), recently discharged from the asylum where Dani’s husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee), is a doctor. In the first minutes of “Oddity,” a woman is faced with an impossible choice. She is home alone while her doctor husband works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. A strange man missing an eye shows up at her door. He claims not to be a threat and informs the resident that someone else, who is trying to hurt her, is already inside the large and isolated home. Should she open the door for this figure or ignore his warning? The nerve-racking scenario takes hold of one’s anxieties and sets the tone for an unsettling ride, which IFC will release theatrically before the film streams on Shudder.

With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

Oddity explores deep fears surrounding death, using ambiguous settings and a unique story concept. The film features interconnected characters and a mysterious mannequin, creating an eerie atmosphere. Filmmaker Damian McCarthy drew inspiration from his childhood love of horror films for Oddity.
A film that spans the various subgenres of horror, Oddity made its debut last week at the 2024 South by Southwest Festival. Born of a childhood love of horror films fed by parents who owned a video rental store in Ireland, Writer and director Damian McCarthy wanted to tell a story about someone who feared what comes after death more than dying itself. Wanting to lend to the unease that comes from horror itself, he made the setting of the film as ambiguous as possible. Oddity stars Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, Caroline Menton, Jonathan French, and Steve Wall.

Haunted fairgrounds are an old staple of the horror genre, as much a part of playground lore as they are of cinema. This early short film by Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise and The Hole In The Ground, brings a distinctly Irish slant to the tale, as three boys break into an abandoned site and dare one another to take a ride on the ghost train.
We see that boys as children and we see two of them, Michael (Owen McDonnell) and Peter (Steve Wall) as adults, revisiting the place, which is sufficient to tell us early on that something went very wrong back then. Though they’re brothers, they have an uncomfortable relationship. Peter wants them to go for a drink together but Michael wants to get back to his Finnish wife and their kids as soon as possible. He seems as if he’s finally making ready to put.

"Where the hell have you been, Barry?" Rock Salt has released an early promo trailer for a totally insane indie horror comedy titled Fried Barry, made in South Africa by a British filmmaker making his feature directorial debut after numerous music videos. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and is playing at tons of other genre festivals this year. "The movie that breaks all the rules." Fried Barry is a bizarre tale told in a genre-bending onslaught of sex, drugs and violence. A spectacle that pulls you in and won’t let go as every expectation is subverted in this boundary-pushing tale of alien abduction. An alien assumes control of a drug addict's body and takes it on a bizarre joyride through Cape Town. Starring Gary Green as Barry, plus Brett Williams, Joey Cramer, Sean Cameron Michael, Steve Wall, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Tamer Burjaq. Casting this super weird lookin'...

Director Lee Cronin serves up some pleasingly old-fashioned supernatural scares in creepy Irish horror The Hole in the Ground.
Seána Kerslake (A Date for Mad Mary) stars as single mother Sarah O’Neill, who moves into a dilapidated farmhouse near a remote village in rural Ireland with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey), after fleeing an abusive relationship with the boy’s father. One night, Chris disappears and Sarah worries that he might have fallen into an enormous sinkhole that has suddenly opened up in the woods, especially when she finds one of his toys near the edge. The next day, Chris turns up safe and sound, but his behaviour is subtly changed and Sarah becomes increasingly worried that the boy is not her son.
