The BBC will air the new series of MasterChef featuring Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

The future of the season had been in doubt after Wallace and Torode were both fired from the show following a report commissioned by MasterChef producer Banijay.

Today, the BBC said that “after careful consideration and consultation with the contestants” it will air MasterChef Season 21 on both BBC One linear and BBC iPlayer.

“This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it,” said a BBC spokesperson, appearing to anticipate backlash. “In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC.”

MasterChef is “much bigger than individuals” and can “absolutely survive and prosper.”

That proclamation was delivered with vigor by BBC Director General Tim Davie earlier this week when grilled by journalists about the misconduct scandal that claimed the jobs of UK MasterChef presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode in a manic few days.

Wallace’s sacking has felt inevitable in recent months and was rubberstamped by Lewis Silkin’s review into his behavior over a near 20-year period, with Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland calling his position “untenable.” Wallace apologized for using “inappropriate language” between 2005 and 2018, but denied more serious allegations.

More surprising was his friend and co-host Torode, who is exiting after the same review substantiated a complaint that he once used racist language, later reported by The Times of London to be the n-word. It’s an allegation Torode says he has no recollection of and “I do not believe that it happened.

The BBC and MasterChef producer Banijay have just revealed that Torode will leave the series at the end of his contract following the report conducted into Wallace’s behavior by law firm Lewis Silkin, which revealed two allegations upheld against two other people that aren’t Wallace.

Torode’s contract has technically run down and he will therefore not be returning to the show. After the news broke, Torode said his last MasterChef shows will be a celebrity season he recently filmed with new host Grace Dent and two Christmas specials.

“The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously,” said a BBC spokesperson. “We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken.

Former BBC presenter Gregg Wallace has defended himself in his first interview since stepping down from his hosting duties following complaints about his behavior and language behind the scenes.

Wallace left his high-profile hosting gig on the BBC’s MasterChef in November 2024, and this weekend he told the Daily Mail newspaper the “tidal wave of abuse” he received left him considering suicide, thinking, “Is my insurance up to date? Will [Wallace’s wife] Anna get some money? She doesn’t deserve this. It would be better if I wasn’t here.”

An investigation by BBC News – which works independently of the BBC’s programme makers – revealed allegations o f inappropriate sexual comments by 13 people who had worked with Wallace across a range of shows, over a 17-year-period.

Since then, further claims of “groping” and “touching” have emerged, all of which Wallace has strenuously denied, adding that he had phoned several co-presenters and guests...

Restaurant critic Grace Dent has been appointed as the new judge for “Celebrity MasterChef,” stepping into the role vacated by Gregg Wallace following his departure amid historical misconduct allegations.

Dent, who has been a regular guest on the BBC cooking competition for over a decade, will join John Torode on the judging panel for the show’s upcoming 20th series. Grace Dent has stepped in as judge on Celebrity MasterChef for 2025.

The critic, who has been a regular guest on MasterChef for more than a decade, will join John Torode following the Gregg Wallace allegations that have emerged in the past couple of weeks.

MasterChef presenter Wallace has stepped away after allegations of inappropriate behaviour and touching from more than a dozen women, and he is currently being probed by MasterChef producer Banijay UK. His lawyers deny he engaged in behavior of a sexually harassing nature. No word yet on the main MasterChef series and whether Dent will be involved with that iteration since Wallace stepped back.

Torode said: “I have loved working with Grace on MasterChef over the years. She has been an excellent guest, an inspiring critic and also set some incredible challenges.” Torode recently described the Wallace allegations as “truly upsetting.”

Lund's obsession with catching this grim, meticulous murderer, giving closure to Nanna's parents, becomes our obsession, too.

I love Lund; she's the sort of better woman I dream to be, shunting her love life, parenting-guilt and planned move to Sweden into the "Emotional crap to deal with" pile as she bids to change Denmark for the greater good.

In fact, it's not even smouldering. Last Friday's column produced not one comment on the subject, unless you count nbt4000's "Where's Graham Rounce?"
