Before Adam Wingard joined Legendary's Monsterverse to helm Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he directed what is arguably one of the greatest slasher films of the 2010s: You're Next. Written by Simon Barrett, the film focuses on an estranged family who find themselves under attack by a group of masked assailants during a family reunion. It's a familiar premise, but one Wingard and Barrett handled with a deft hand that's filled with black humor and gory kills. Now, the pair are discussing the sequel they had planned, which they're glad they never made.

The chat between the two comes during a new commentary track on You're Next, which was released yesterday on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited (via Bloody Disgusting). The film saw its killers decked out in a lamb, a fox, and a tiger mask, and while Lamb Mask (L.

Lionsgate Limited, the studio’s new direct-to-consumer shop, has launched pre-orders for an exclusive SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition of You’re Next.

The 2011 film has been restored in 4K with Dolby Vision Hdr, approved by director Adam Wingard, and Dolby Atmos audio.

Due out on February 25, it costs $39.99.

Recently screened at Raindance, Ben Charles Edwards’ Father Of Flies is a new horror film which uses old tricks to powerful effect. It’s the story of a family in crisis following a bitter divorce, and is told mostly through the eyes of young Michael (Keaton Tetlow), who is becoming increasingly afraid of his new stepmother (Camilla Rutherford). With father Richard (Nicholas Tucci) trying to provide for the family and Michael’s teenage sister Donna (Page Ruth) increasingly distracted, the suffering of the past could be about to lead to more. It’s based on a story which Ben wrote as a child, and when we met up to discuss the film, I began be asking about that.

“Well, I wrote a short story as a child that was quite similar,” he says. “It was about how we can villainise the wrong woman – the stepmother – and how we're too quick to.

After keeping the horror genre alive and well in South Florida during the Covid-19 pandemic, the hard-working team behind the Popcorn Frights Film Festival is closing out their Drive-In Horrorshow summer screening series in safety and style on Friday, August 14th with the world premiere of the Caroline Williams-starring Ten Minutes to Midnight and the Southeast US premiere of filmmaker Jay Baruchel’s new horror movie Random Acts of Violence.

The double feature screening will also include the world premieres of Mathew and Nathaniel Barber’s short film No One is Coming and Zach Wincik and Danny Salemme’s short film Cottonmouth.

UK-based genre specialist Jinga Films has added five titles to its slate ahead of next week’s virtual Cannes week (June 22-26).

They include Erik Bloomquist’s black comedy horror Ten Minutes To Midnight, a Us title about a punk rock DJ who is bitten by a vampire bat on the night of her final broadcast. Caroline Williams leads the cast alongside Nicole Kang, Nicholas Tucci, and Alice Kremelberg.

Bloomquist wrote the film with his brother Carson, with the pair producing with Adam Weppler for Mainframe Pictures.

“Max Von Sydow was something like a consummate actor, with a pride in his art and a dedication to his craft that I’ve encountered in very few people in my life,” Scorsese, who directed von Sydow in 2010’s “Shutter Island,” said in a statement. “On the set he was remarkable, and off the set he a complete gentleman. … And what he and Ingmar Bergman found together is more precious than gold.”

Very sad news is coming in for us to pass along today as horror genre star Nicholas Tucci, best known for his roles in the slasher movie You're Next and the Syfy series Channel Zero, has reportedly passed away. The actor's passing was confirmed by his father with a post on Tucci's official Facebook account, revealing Tucci had died at the age of 38 at the Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday. "Nick chose to keep his illness private so that he could continue to pursue his professional and artistic dreams for as long as possible. In the last year, he was able to audition, go on location, and continue the work he loved so much," the post reads.

It's also made clear in the message that Tucci had a lot of love and support from his colleagues and fans when he was here, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by the Tucci family.

Long Lost is a low budget thriller mystery that includes the immortal line “you have asparagus in your teeth”. Our young slacker of a protagonist, Seth gets invited to a mansion by cryptic letter (as we often do). From this point we are introduced to a slightly creepy rich chap who “values his privacy” and thinks that “the internet is a creepy place”. It sure is.

The film also has the line “I handle my own wood”. Who doesn’t.

The creepy chap turns out to be rude and we are told is Richard, Seth’s half brother, and Richard instigates a game called “chubby bunny” (which was actually quite enjoyable and involves marshmallows if you are not aware of it)

Mainframe Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a new indie thriller titled Long Lost, another one of these secluded mansion getaway turns into a violent, scary survival films. Long Lost is the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Erik Bloomquist, and is about a guy who gets a letter to meet a person at his house for the weekend. Things start to get strange, and it turns out he knows more about him than it seems. Starring Adam Weppler, Catherine Corcoran, and Nicholas Tucci. This reminds me of plenty other films like this, namely The Invitation and The Gift most recently. Of course they try to throw in some unique twists and turns, but I'm not sure how it will turn out. While you weren't looking, the latest chapter of the usually thrilling Syfy series, Channel Zero, has booked its return.

In an unusual move, Dream Door is considered the second half of Channel Zero Season 2 and will be airing all six of its episodes on succeeding days beginning October 26 through October 31.

Since the premiere of Channel Zero: Candle Cove, the series has done much to prove horror can be done well on network television. The key is short, focused seasons and an anthology format.

There needed to be a bump in the road eventually, and Dream Door doesn't live up to the others.

Spanish actress and triple threat Ana Asensio wrote, directed and starred in her feature film debut “Most Beautiful Island,” which won South by Southwest’s grand jury award for narrative feature, and audiences will finally be able to see the thriller, billed as being in the vein of “Eyes Wide Shut” about immigrant life in America, when Orion Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Film release the movie this fall.

Co-starring Natasha Romanova, David Little, Nicholas Tucci, Larry Fessenden and Caprice Benedetti and produced by Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix, “Most Beautiful Island” had its New York premiere at this week’s BAMcinemaFest. The film is a psychological thriller set in the world of undocumented female immigrants hoping to make a life in New York City.

Psychological thriller won grand jury prize at SXSW.

Orion Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Films have acquired North American rights to Ana Asensio’s Most Beautiful Island.

Asensio stars alongside Natasha Romanova, David Little, Nicholas Tucci, Larry Fessenden and Caprice Benedetti.

Fessenden’s New York-based Glass Eye Pix produced Most Beautiful Island, which takes place in the world of undocumented female immigrants in New York City.

The film chronicles one day in the life of one of the young women as she becomes part of a cruel game for the perverse entertainment of a privileged few. The film won the grand jury prize at SXSW earlier this year.

Asensio wrote the screenplay and also produced with Jenn Wexler, Chadd Harbold, Fessenden, and Noah Greenberg. Peter Phok, Jose María Garcia, Ahmet Bilgen, Selim Cevikel, Christohper Todd, and Gill Holland served as executive producers.

The film receives its New York premiere on Wednesday at Bam Cinemafest.

Ana Asensio’s Most Beautiful Island is a stormy, unpredictable endurance test from start-to-finish. At its core, immigration fears and female perspectives sing a plight of New York City’s rough waters. Command and circumstance manipulate those less fortunate, who will do anything to survive. Undocumented “citizens” walk alongside more entitled Americans, yet their experiences are so disconcertingly different. Do they always involve a life-threatening game of chance, as Asensio’s film engages? I would assume – maybe incorrectly – that answer is no. But still, given cinematic context, messages of tenacity are read loud and clear. Strung with tension, and heated to an aggressive boil.

Apart from writing and directing Most Beautiful Island, Asensio also stars as lead subject Luciana – a New Yorker with many responsibilities. Because she’s undocumented, most of Luciana’s work comes from odd-jobs paid in cash. Babysitting bratty kids and whatnot. Either that, or she scams...

As immigration continues to dominate the national conversation, things couldn’t be more timely for Ana Asensio‘s “Most Beautiful Island,” which is getting ready to premiere at this month’s SXSW Film Festival.

After drawing attention to the festival’s annual Gaming Awards, organizers behind the South by Southwest Film Festival have posted the full, comprehensive lineup, revealing that the likes of Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver and Free Fire, the riotous ensemble thriller from Ben Wheatley, are among those films that will screen for critics and attendees.

Per SXSW 2017‘s website, this year’s showcase will host “84 World Premieres, 11 North American Premieres, and 6 Us Premieres. First-time filmmakers account for 51 films, continuing our tradition of unearthing the emergent talent of tomorrow.” British auteur Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England) is a regular of the Texas festival, and will be rubbing shoulders with other favorites including Michael Winterbottom, Nacho Vigalondo, Michael Showalter.

In 2005, writer-director Rian Johnson exploded onto the film scenes with one of the most unique movie experiences in recent memory by delivering Brick, a neo-noir set in a Californian public high school. The story featured a cast of talented young actors spewing spiffy dialogue, and their characters getting into deep and dark trouble befitting of the sort of yarns told back in the 1940s and 1950s, only that is was happening in a modern setting and at school. It was fresh whilst calling back to film noir of yore. A decade later, writer-director Erik Bloomquist tries his own hand in similar but not identical fashion with The Cobblestone Corridor, a short film (25 minutes) transpiring in the confines of a private high school.

Allan Archer (Bloomquist) is the editor in chief of the institution’s newspaper, The Gazette.

The Worst Year of My Life, a new romantic drama from budding writer/director Jonathan Smith, was reportedly made on a $15,000 budget. It probably set some sort of record for most individual scenes in an 80-minute feature – quite an accomplishment given the financial restraints – but Smith should have been shooting for dramatic quality, rather than quantity, in a film with middle-school level acting, tired plotting and misanthropic characters who are very difficult to root for. The production value is impressive; unfortunately, it is also one of the only commendable things to say about this dopey, dour story about a failed relationship.

There's much that's familiar about low-budget horror You're Next: the masked killers, the improvised weapons, the bickering survivors, the remote setting. But director Adam Wingard injects both a playfulness and a Giallo-like sense of mystery to his home-invasion slasher, and the result is refreshingly economical and direct.

In an unfeasibly large, austere country mansion, conspicuously wealthy parents Aubrey and Paul (Barbara Crampton and Rob Moran) welcome their litter of spoilt offspring to a rare evening get-together.
