‘Los Frikis’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Paco Dead?
Image
Set in early 90s Cuba, Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz’s coming-of-age drama, Los Frikis, is centered around a group of punk rockers who are in search of freedom. In 1961, Fidel Castro banned rock music in Cuba, but that didn’t stop youngsters from exploring the music behind closed doors. The anti-communist rock and roll lovers found their safe haven in underground clubs where they met like-minded people and played music. The scarcity of food and housing and the overall lack of free will pushed many youngsters to the edge. The AIDS epidemic was on the rise, and when the youngsters discovered that the sanitariums provided food and shelter, they wondered if getting sick was the only option they had left to live a dignified life.

Spoiler Alert

Why did Gustavo fake his illness?

Gustavo’s only family was his older brother, Paco, after their father was shot for disobeying the authorities.

Journey Into the Underground Punk Scene of 1990s Cuba With New 'Los Frikis' Posters From Mutant [Exclusive]
Image
Los Frikis, a new drama about a band of punk-rock outcasts in 1990s Cuba, will be available to rent or buy digitally this week. To commemorate the punk-rock spirit of the film, design house Mutant has produced four new exclusive posters for the film. Collider has an exclusive first look at the posters, which were designed by artist Boneface. Mutant and Boneface collaborated with the Los Frikis filmmakers to capture the film's anarchic ethos.

The poster features a lone rider in punk rock garb atop a horse that's up to its torso in water; both are surrounded by fluttering butterflies. There are four uniquely eye-popping color variants of the poster, each patterned after an iconic punk album cover: the US and UK releases of The Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, The Misfits' Walk Among Us, and The Ramones' Rocket to Russia. All four posters will be available on Friday,...

Geoffrey Rush Reveals How He Could Return With Johnny Depp for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6'
Image
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is coming back to screens – like anyone would believe otherwise. While there are currently questions over whether it will be with Johnny Depp, Margot Robbie, or someone completely different at the helm, one original star would be more than happy to make a small appearance – and even has his own hilarious pitch as to how it could happen. While speaking exclusively to MovieWeb’s George Edelman while promoting his new movie The Rule of Jenny Pen, the legendary Geoffrey Rush addressed a possible swashbuckling return as ne'er-do-well pirate Barbossa. He said:

“I had a good time on that over a very long period. It was probably 12, 15 years or something, from beginning to end. But after the final chapter, I've died twice, and I didn't want an exhumation. I thought it would have been wrong having sacrificed his life for his own child, yeah, and I thought,...

Los Frikis Review: an eye-opening mosh pit of a film!
Image
Last Updated on January 2, 2025

Plot: Inspired by actual events, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, where a group of punk rockers, in search of freedom, deliberately inject HIV to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia.

Review: In 1991, when I was ten years old, I spent most of my days listening to Nirvana’s Nevermind on repeat, riding my BMX through local dirt trails, and recording episodes of MTV’s Liquid Television on VHS, hoping to catch another chapter of Peter Chung’s Æon Flux. All things considered, it was a breezy way for an American adolescent to grow up. Little did I know that people were suffering in other parts of the world, like Cuba, where a Marxist–Leninist politician named Fidel Castro pressed his tar and nicotine-covered thumb upon the necks of his people. How could I...

Adria Arjona Reflects on Her Breakout Year: ‘These Directors Gave Me No Limitations’
Image
How busy has 2024 been for actress Adria Arjona? She graciously chatted with IndieWire from the airport, right before a recent flight. “It’s the only time where I can kind of have a second,” she said, sheepishly.

While the actress became a bonafide star-to-watch via a breadth of projects over the years, from “6 Underground” to “Father of the Bride” and “Andor,” Arjona recently achieved a new level of success as the romantic lead opposite Glen Powell (another 2024 breakout) in Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.”

What followed the inventive Netflix rom-com of the summer was a standout role in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut “Blink Twice,” and now the opportunity to star and produce indie dramedy “Los Frikis,” in which she plays nurse to a group of youths in 1991 Cuba, who purposefully injected themselves with HIV in order to escape poverty by entering a government-run treatment home. And, yes, the...

Directing Duo Developing 'Treasure Island' Remake at Disney
Image
Filmmaking duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are teaming up with Disney to make a new version of Treasure Island. The duo, who previously directed the critically acclaimed film The Peanut Butter Falcon, have been making a splash in Hollywood recently, and their new film, Los Frikis, is arriving this Christmas.

Schwartz and Nilson'sTreasure Island project is currently in development, so there are not many details yet. The directors spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Los Frikis and teased the upcoming collaboration. Nilson said their pitch “has the patina of the 1970s surf world.” This could hint to a more modern riff on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Schwartz further described their approach, saying:

“It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they [Disney] ever make it, it would be so fun. It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy,...

Disney Rebooting Treasure Island With Unexpected Creative Team
Image
Treasure Island is being remade at Disney. Robert Louis Stevenson's beloved 1883 novel will be reimagined by an unexpected duo: Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, the filmmakers behind The Peanut Butter Falcon and the upcoming Los Frikis.

Nilson and Schwartz unveiled the Treasure Island reboot news during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Los Frikis, the duo's based on true events drama about the audacity and resilience of kindred souls facing the challenges of Special Period Cuba in the 1990s. "We’re working on Treasure Island for Disney. It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they [Disney] ever make it, it would be so fun," said Schwartz. "It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy." Added Nilson, "It has the patina of the 1970s surf world. It's all there."

‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ Directors Discuss the Cost of Turning Down the Major Studios to Make ‘Los Frikis’: “We Chose a Tough Path”
Image
It’s fitting that Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz’s Los Frikis is about the punk-rock spirit. It’s truly the most punk-rock choice they could’ve made following The Peanut Butter Falcon, their critically acclaimed 2019 indie that starred Dakota Johnson, Shia Labeouf and Zack Gottsagen.

After Peanut Butter Falcon’s profitable theatrical run and awards season contention, Nilson and Schwartz were tempted with all the usual offers from the major studios, but their hearts kept gravitating toward a uniquely challenging story about the Cuban experience in the 1990s. Needless to say, their admirable decision to remain in the independent space was met with a lot of blank stares and head-scratching.

“We took a meeting with a studio head who was like, ‘Alright, I’ve got a movie with two movie stars. You’ll get on a plane tonight, and we’ll go shoot it.’ And we were like, ‘Holy shit,...

‘The Brutalist’ Builds On Awards Buzz With Strong Limited Opening Buoyed By Letterboxd – Specialty Box Office
Image
Brandy Corbet’s The Brutalist from A24 hammered its way into theaters this weekend with one of the best limited openings of 2024 (no. 3 after Anora and Kinds of Kindness). It sold out nearly 30 showtimes in New York and Los Angeles for a gross of $266.8k on four screens for a per screen opening of $66.7k.

The majority of audiences were under 35 and almost half heard about the film via Letterboxd as the online film-centric social network continues to be a defining force for indie word-of-mouth in the post-Covid era.

Corbet’s third feature centers on Adrien Brody’s László Toth, a Brutalist architect from Hungary attempting to rebuild his life in postwar America. Initially forced to toil in poverty, Toth soon wins a contract that will change the course of the next 30 years of his life.

The sweeping film premiered in Venice where Corbet won Best Director and has built throughout the fall season.

‘Los Frikis’: How the Directors of ‘Peanut Butter Falcon’ Brought One of Cuba’s Strangest Stories to Screen With Help From Lord & Miller
Image
It all started in Havana. For filmmakers Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson — the directorial duo behind 2019’s Shia Labeouf-starring underdog hit “The Peanut Butter Falcon” — their next project came through word of mouth.

Schwartz says his and Nilson’s interest in telling the story of “Los Frikis” originated long before “The Peanut Butter Falcon” had even been released. He recalls meeting a group of Cubans in the country’s capital and falling in love with the Latin American spirit. It was through these friendships with actors and artists in the Cuban community, Schwartz says, that he and Nilson learned the true story of “Los Frikis” — a group of impoverished punk rockers in 1990s Cuba who intentionally injected themselves with HIV as a means of securing food, shelter and freedom in a government-run sanatorium.

Despite his desire to bring Latin American stories across the border, Schwartz wasn’t sure a Spanish-language...

‘Los Frikis’ Review: A Vibrant Drama Set in 1990s Cuba Spotlights Punk Rockers Who Took Extreme Measures to Survive
Image
Traveling through clandestine airwaves, Kurt Cobain touched down in Havana, Cuba, in the turbulent early 1990s. A time of dire economic hardship for the island nation after the fall of the Soviet Union, the “Special Period” pushed thousands of Cubans to migrate, risking their lives at sea. Those who stayed suffered through great scarcity (the U.S. embargo played its part). The grunge star never visited in person, but via the radios of locals illegally tuning in to stations from the U.S. after Fidel Castro banned rock music. One of those listeners, 18-year-old Gustavo (Eros de la Puente), will later try to cover Nirvana’s iconic song in the vibrant Spanish-language drama “Los Frikis,” from Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, the filmmakers behind the moving buddy movie “The Peanut Butter Falcon.”

Produced by Phil Lord (who is Cuban American) and Chris Miller, “Los Frikis” is based on the real-life...

‘Los Frikis’ Review: Cuban Punks Infect Themselves with HIV in a Jarringly Sweet Coming-of-Age Story from the Directors of ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’
Image
In the early 1990s, a couple hundred members of the Cuban punk scene deliberately infected themselves with HIV in an effort to escape the severe economic depression that crippled the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The sick were sent to state-run sanitariums, where they had free access to food, medicine, and the rock music that Fidel Castro had banned since before they were born. The “Frikis,” as the kids from that subculture were called, hoped that a cure for the virus would be developed by the time Cuba’s “Special Period” came to an end and their home city of Havana was a livable place again. Such hopes were tragically misplaced.

In the early 2020s, two American filmmakers named Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz — whose previous feature was the sweet and sincere but too-Sundance-for-Sundance “The Peanut Butter Falcon” — decided to make a sweet and sincere but too-Sundance-for-Sundance...

Los Frikis Review — Phil Lord and Chris Miller Produce This Year’s Hidden Indie Gem
Image
In cinema, films based on true stories are often considered “safe,” but that couldn’t be further from the case for Los Frikis. Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the Spider-Verse movies), Los Frikis takes its challenging subject matter and infuses it with genuine heart, making it an irresistible crowd-pleaser despite all the odds stacked against it.

Los Frikis Review

Los Frikis tells the story of a group of impoverished punk rockers living in Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union who decide to inject themselves with HIV to allow them to live at a state-sponsored sanitarium for AIDS patients. The film is based on true events that many in America have likely never heard of, but it feels incredibly necessary nevertheless.

For an independent production, Los Frikis is actually a very strong movie from a technical standpoint. The cinematography and set design are very impressive, making...

A punk band ignites a revolution to escape oppression in a trailer for the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-produced drama Los Frikis
Image
Most people can’t conceive of the hardships and strife inflicted on others. It’s not entirely their fault. Television places onlookers behind a screen while horrors lurk outside their door, and news outlets are questionable these days at best. What I’m trying to say is oppression is omnipresent, and Los Frikis, the latest film from The Peanut Butter Falcon directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, is ready to throw audiences into a mosh pit of drama for a story about breaking the chains that bind us. What? You don’t believe me? Watch today’s emotionally charged trailer for Los Frikis and then decide.

Inspired by true events, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, where a group of punk rockers in search of freedom deliberately inject HIV to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia. Produced by...

'Los Frikis' Review | Cuban Punk Rockers Choose AIDS
Image
Based on true events, Los Frikis tells an astonishing coming-of-age story about the extreme lengths Cuban punk rockers went to free themselves from the oppressive socialist regime. Filmmakers Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz follow The Peanut Butter Falcon with a second feature that's equally frank in its depiction of a desperate search for freedom and humanity. Los Frikis paints a damning portrait of needless misery and subjugation, but is also thrilling with the ecstatic power-chord frenzy of unfettered youth. The film's endearing characters grip your attention until a downbeat third act loses narrative adrenaline.

An opening card informs the audience that dictator Fidel Castro banned rock music after he seized control of Cuba in 1959. Decades later, as grunge music conquered America in the early '90s, we're introduced to a subculture of rambunctious teens who flaunt authority by playing punk music in secret gatherings. We're introduced to Paco (Héctor Medina), a tattooed,...

Image
“No one can tell you not to create. You must create,” Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo told a crowd of Arkansas-based filmmakers and fans during Variety’s Southern Storytellers panel at the Filmland festival and conference in Little Rock.

Co-founder of Filmland (and director of 1960s motorcycle club saga “The Bikeriders”) Jeff Nichols presented Domingo with the event’s inaugural Southern Storytellers Award, before joining Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in steering a wide-ranging conversation about the craft with Domingo and half a dozen other writers, directors and producers.

On the prison-set, rehabilitation-through-art drama “Sing Sing,” which screened the same day, Domingo served as a producer alongside fellow panelists Clint Bentley and Monique Walton. All three shared how their careers had started, explaining that while storytelling may not be the most stable career, they’ve all learned to “hustle” to sustain it.

“I don’t like the word ‘struggle,...

Blink Twice star Adria Arjona has the wind at her back.

After her powerful turn as Bix Caleen on season one of the Emmy-nominated Andor, she followed it up with a scene-sealing performance in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, which included Arjona’s contender for line delivery of the year. (More on that later.) She’s also starring in the upcoming Los Frikis, Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson’s follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2019 film, The Peanut Butter Falcon. And with Andor season two already in the can, Arjona is currently filming yet another highly anticipated series in Criminal, which Ed Brubaker and Jordan Harper adapted from Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ comic book series of the same name. (Co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are helming the Amazon Prime series, which counts Charlie Hunnam, Richard Jenkins, Arjona, Emilia Clarke and Luke Evans as series regulars.)

Peanut Butter Falcon filmmakers to direct Riders Of Justice remake
Tyler Nilson
Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson, who made Peanut Butter Falcon, have been hired to direct the English language remake of the Mads Mikkelsen-starring film, Riders Of Justice.

Not long after Riders Of Justice released back in 2021, news emerged that the Danish film would be getting an English language remake.

A revenge thriller told with an eccentric tone and a streak of dark comedy, the original Riders Of Justice (Retfærdighedens ryttere) was popular on its original release, and we gave it four stars in our review. Directed by Anders Thomas Jensen and starring Mads Mikkelsen in a story about ‘a recently deployed soldier who returns home to care for his teenage daughter after his wife is killed in a train accident. But when a team of statistics experts investigating the accident claim foul play, the soldier embarks on a revenge-fuelled mission, along with an eclectic group, to find those responsible.

‘Riders of Justice’ Remake From ‘Peanut Butter Falcon’ Filmmakers in The Works
Image
Peanut Butter Falcon filmmakers Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson have been tapped to adapt and direct the remake of Riders of Justice for Lionsgate.

Schwartz and Nilson also directed the feature Los Frikis, which earned the top jury prize at the Miami Film Festival. Their previous film, The Peanut Butter Falcon, a modern day take on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn tale that starred Shia Labeouf and Dakota Johnson, became the highest-grossing indie film of 2019. That feature film debut was preceded by short docs about Alex Honnold, the subject of Free Solo.

Shawn Levy, Dan Levine of Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment are producing the Riders of Justice remake after Lionsgate earlier picked up the English-language adaptation rights to the Danish action-comedy directed by Anders Thomas Jensen.

Jensen and Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the 2020 movie, will write the English-language version. Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Anders Kjaeurhauge from the original film are executive producing,...

Shia Labeouf’s Best Movie Hits Hulu Next Month
Image
Every now and again, actors will star in a movie that completely surprises you. Sometimes it’s the change of tone, like when a performer who usually features in comedic roles suddenly delivers an unexpectedly dramatic performance. At other times, the surprise might have to do with the source material, such as when an actor who usually stars in forgettable films plays the lead in an Oscar-winner.

On rare occasions, both of those things can happen at the same time. For a recent example, look no farther than last year’s Uncut Gems. This film, about a Manhattan-based jeweller whose gambling addiction prevents him from paying off aggressive loan sharks, featured Adam Sandler – normally known for his cash-grabber comedies – in the role of a lifetime.

The same can be said for Shia Labeouf and The Peanut Butter Falcon, which will be coming to Hulu next month on August 6th. Written...
