New Delhi, Nov 6 (Ians) Shiva Thapa added a historic 6th Asian Championships medal to his belt with a commanding victory and joined Mohammed Hussamuddin and Govind Kumar Sahani in the semifinals at the 2022 Asbc Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Sunday.

Thapa (63.5kg) was contesting the quarterfinals against Minsu Choi of South Korea and began the bout effectively, using his quick feet and powerful jabs to assert control over his opponent. The Indian boxer enhanced his attacking dominance as the game progressed and had Choi on the ropes for the majority of the match.

The match ended in a 4:1 victory for Thapa who now becomes the most successful male boxer in the Asian Championships with 6 competition medals to his name.

New Delhi, November 6, 2022: Two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin advanced to the semifinals and further increased India’s medal count at the 2022 Asbc Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Sunday.

Hussamuddin (57kg) was up against South Korea’s Haengseok Lee in the quarterfinal bout. The South Korean started on the front foot in the first round, landing clean punches and keeping his Indian counterpart at bay for the majority of the first round.

With the prospects of an upset looming, the 2022 Commonwealth bronze medallist utilised his experience to make an inspired comeback and dismissed any such possibilities. Hussamuddin went all out in the next two rounds to dominate his way to a 5-0 win and guaranteed yet another medal for India.

Hussamuddin will face the 2021 World Championships silver medallist Serik Temirzha in the semifinals bout on November 10.

Amman (Jordan), Nov 6 (Ians) India started off the day on a mixed note with 2022 Commonwealth Games medallist Mohammad Hassamuddin storming into the semifinals, while Ananta Chopade crashed out in the quarterfinals of the Asian Elite Boxing Championships here on Sunday.

Mohammad Hussamuddin, who won a bronze medal in Birmingham Commonwealth Games, overpowered South Korea’s Haengseok Lee 5-0 in the quarterfinals bout in the 57 kg weight class, assuring the country a medal.

Chopade suffered a 0-4 defeat against Kyrgyzstan’s Seidekmatov Sanzhai in the 54kg class quarterfinals bout on Sunday.

Hassamuddin and Chopade are the first of the seven Indian boxers that will take the ring on Sunday, hoping to make it to the medal round in the prestigious Continental tournament.

The male Indian pugilists that will be in action on Sunday include five-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa at 63kg, Govind Kumar Sahani in the 48kg weight class and Amit Kumar in 67kg.
