‘Dog Man’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, Ricky Gervais | Written and Directed by Peter Hastings

Written and directed by Peter Hastings, this delightfully manic animated comedy is based on the best-selling series of children’s graphic novels by Dav Pilkey. As such, the film is a spin-off, of sorts, from 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which was also based on Pilkey’s novels.

For a U-rated animated comedy, Dog Man has a surprisingly dark beginning. Indeed, it’s basically RoboCop, only instead of a cop and a robot, it’s a cop and his pet police dog (both voiced by Hastings). Sure enough, after an introduction to the crime-fighting pair, they are suddenly caught in an explosion, after which a nurse looks at their mangled bodies and says, “What if we sew the dog’s head onto the man’s body?...

10 Upcoming Animated Movies in 2025 We Can’t Wait to See
Image
Market movies are majorly marketed toward kids, but let’s be real, some of the best films of all time have come from animation. If you have seen movies like the Toy Story franchise, Woody and Buzz always have an amazing tale to share with some of the best messages. Even Lightning McQueen’s redemption in Cars is proof that animation isn’t just for kids.

Animated films have the ability to bend stories easily due to a lack of realism, and this gives creators great freedom in creating movies and stories that would be hard to make with real-life actors. Signs of a good animated movie will have a balance of stunning visuals, a heartfelt story, and good humor.

Animated Sequels Are Back, Led by Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ but Pixar Counters with Original ‘Elio’
Image
It’s another year of high-profile animated sequels, led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” and Nickelodeon/Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Square Pants,” and the “Smurfs” film.

But there are plenty of attention-grabbing non-sequels in 2025: “Pixar’s intergalactic “Elio,” DreamWorks’ “Dog Man,” Neon’s French “Arco,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “A Magnificent Life,” Sylvain Chomet’s biopic about French author-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, and Sony Picture’s “Scarlet,” the latest anime from Mamoru Hosoda (“Belle”).

In addition, Netflix delivers another diverse slate: “In Your Dreams,” “KPop Demon Hunters” (with Sony Pictures), Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2D adult comedy, “Fixed,” “Lost in Starlight” (the streamer’s first Korean-language animated film), “Plankton: The Movie” (with Nickelodeon), and “The Twits” adapted from Roald Dahl.

Also, there are three Oscar-qualifying holdovers from 2024: “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” “The Colors Within,” and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.

Image
Exclusive: Filmmaker Peter Hastings has signed with Independent Artist Group for representation.

The news comes following the January release of Hastings’ hit animated feature Dog Man, based on the bestselling book series by Dav Pilkey, which opened at #1 at the North American box office and has so far grossed over $105 million globally.

Hailing from DreamWorks Animation and Universal, Dog Man follows a half-dog, half-human police officer as he doggedly pursues the feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Hastings directed from his own script, with Pete Davidson, Poppy Liu, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher leading the cast.

A six-time Emmy and Peabody Award winner, Hastings previously wrote and produced on several Steven Spielberg series for Warner Bros including Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain, which he ran as a primetime series for The WB. Dog Man
Image
Brace yourself to enter the Captain Underpants cinematic universe. The immensely silly, pleasantly bonkers Dog Man started life as a comic book written by the two primary-school protagonists of Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants books before becoming its own bestselling series: one that’s been notably successful in converting reluctant readers into book fans and even aspiring comic-book artists. Now it’s joined its progenitor as a frenetic and very funny animated film.

Dog Man is born when an accident in pursuit of the dastardly Petey (Pete Davidson), a striped orange cat who terrorises the city, leaves cop Officer Knight and his dog Greg in dire straits. The dog’s body is beyond repair, as is the man’s head, so surgeons have the inspired idea of combining the surviving parts to create a man with the head of a dog. The wordless but heroic result is Dog Man, who...

No Box Office Touchdowns This Super Bowl Weekend: ‘Dog Man’ Drops -62%; Few Falling In Love With ‘Heart Eyes’ & ‘Love Hurts’ – Sunday Am Update
Image
Sunday Am: In a motion picture industry crunched by streaming, where studios are watching their ledgers closer than ever, Super Bowl weekend might be worth the spend to drop a tentpole trailer during the big game ($8M for 30 seconds of time this year), but it sure as hell isn’t a place to open a movie anymore.

True, more often than not, Super Bowl weekend is the frame where titles open to single digits, and studios have used the frame over and over again as a dumping ground. This year wasn’t any different.

However, studios have been able to bust through in the past with horror movies and female skewing titles. The biggest opening title ever during Super Bowl weekend remains Disney’s Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concerts back in 2008 with $31.1M. The last time a No. 1 movie crossed $30M over Super Bowl...

Ke Huy Quan's Action Movie and Acclaimed Slasher Film Unable to Dethrone Animated Hit at Box Office

Hollywood icon Ke Huy Quan-led Love Hurts and Josh Ruben's Heart Eyesopen strong but still can't outpace Dog Man.

Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man is still dominating the box office in its second weekend in theaters, even in spite of the releases of both the action comedy Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan and director Josh Ruben's new slasher comedy, Heart Eyes. While Heart Eyes has already brought in over $3.7 million in preview screenings and Friday showings, that only barely outpaced Dog Man's second Friday earnings of $3.2 million. Preview screenings and Friday showings of Love Hurts brought in $2.6 million, with forecasts for the weekend putting it at around $6 million, whereas Dog Man is on track to pass earnings of over $54 million within its first ten days, giving it an $18 million projection for its second weekend in theaters.

Box Office Predictions: Dog Man to put a leash on Love Hurts and Heart Eyes during Super Bowl weekend
Image
Last weekend, Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man took a bite out of the top spot at the domestic box office while howling at the moon with $36M for its opening weekend. Drew Hancock’s psychological thriller Companion trailed behind Dog Man with a pooper-scooper despite favorable reviews (including one from JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols) for a $9.5M opening. As a spinoff of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man features a starry cast of voice talent, including Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. The half-man, half-dog, all-cop animated comedy stands to lift its leg on the number one slot at the box office this weekend with an additional $16M-$20M, even as Super Bowl Lix looks to tackle a majority of audiences.

Chasing after Dog Man this weekend is the Jonathan Eusebio-directed action comedy Love Hurts, starring Everything Everywhere All At Once...

Dav Pilkey’s canine supercop creation is upstaged by the world’s ‘most evilest’ cat in this energetic animated feature

Like an outbreak of head lice, there comes a moment in primary school when it turns out every kid in class has a copy of one of Dav Pilkey’s brilliantly silly graphic novels stuffed in their book bag. Now Pilkey’s bestselling Dog Man books (a spin-off of the Captain Underpants series) have been turned into a noisy, fun movie. First thing to overcome is the ick factor in the origin tale of how Dog Man came to have a man’s body and a dog’s head. The story goes that after a bomb explosion critically injures a police officer and his trusty canine sidekick, a nurse decides the only thing for it is to sew the dog’s head on to the officer’s body.

The resulting supercop is Dog Man,...

‘Dog Man’ Is Not for the Dogs — It’s for the People
Image
With “Dog Man,” DreamWorks Animation is barking up the right tree.

Like apparently a whole bunch of other parents, I took my 8-year-old and 4-year-old to see “Dog Man” on its opening weekend. My only expectations were to eat (more than) my share of Adam Aron’s popcorn and to watch my older daughter crack up seeing her favorite graphic novel come to life. That first thing definitely happened; the second didn’t. But that’s not because she didn’t thoroughly enjoy “Dog Man” — in our debriefing (emphasis on the brief: “Yeah”), it sounds like she did — but because my eyes were instead glued to the screen.

“Dog Man,” an adaptation of the Dav Pilkey comic — itself a spinoff of his “Captain Underpants” — was an underdog that over-performed at the box office this past weekend, making $36 million vs. estimates of $25-$30 million. It helped that we are in that...

The unbridled excitement of Dog Man stems from its rejection of traditional storytelling limits. DreamWorks Animation captures Dav Pilkey’s children’s series with wild energy, creating a film bursting with visual chaos and narrative freedom. Peter Hastings directs a work that embraces pure silliness, transforming what could be overwhelming into something truly exciting.

Dog Man opens with a blend of zany humor and genuine emotion. Set in Ohkay City, a world where rules bend and twist, the story follows a character born from medical creativity—part human, part dog. This hero moves with the unfiltered excitement of a child’s imaginative sketch, leaping through adventures that prioritize humor over logic. Action sequences race with comedic momentum, embodying pure childhood creativity: wild, unconstrained, and gloriously messy.

The film goes beyond simple comedy. Its rapid jokes and physical comedy carry emotional depth. While children will delight in its goofy spirit, subtle...

Dog Man Already Recoups Budget With Opening Weekend Box Office, Nearly Setting New Record
Image
The DreamWorks Animation/Universal Captain Underpants spinoff film, Dog Man, ran away with the top box office spot for the weekend of Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. The Peter Hastings-directed film starring the voices of Pete Davidson, Poppy Liu, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, and Billy Boyd took in $35 million in the U.S. and with its additional international box office take, surpassed a $40 million global opening.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Dog Man, based on the original books by Dav Pilkey, has already made back its $40 million production budget. The film’s logline reads: “When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Box Office: ‘Paddington in Peru’ Nears $100 Million Overseas, ‘Dog Man’ Fetches $40 Million Globally
Image
“Paddington in Peru,” the third tale about the marmalade-loving bear, is nearing the $100 million milestone at the international box office.

The film, which doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Feb. 14, has collected $93.2 million from 51 overseas territories. Those are promising ticket sales for the family film, though the two prior “Paddington” adventures each earned $249 million in their international runs. So, the threequel has a ways to go to match those revenues. There’s time, however, since “Paddington in Peru” has yet to open in major markets like France (Feb. 5), South Korea (Feb. 19), Italy (Feb. 20), Spain (Feb. 21) and Japan (May 9).

The first two films in the “Paddington” trilogy, all based on the children’s series by British author Michael Bond, have generated more than $500 million at the global box office. StudioCanal developed and fully financed the third as well, with Sony handling distribution in select territories such as the United States,...

Box Office: ‘Dog Man’ Barks Loudly in Near-Record January Opening for an Animated Film, ‘Companion’ Also Impresses
Image
Dog Man barked plenty loud at the domestic box office over the Jan. 31-Feb. 2 weekend, where it easily topped the chart with $35 million in another resounding win for the family marketplace. Its global opening of $40.2 million means it has already recouped the money it cost DreamWorks Animation and Universal to make the Captain Underpants spinoff, excluding marketing.

In North America, it scored the second-biggest January start ever for an animated film behind DreamWorks Animation’s 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3 ($41.28 million), not adjusted for inflation.

The movie, about a man and a cop who must share the same body after something goes horribly awry, is the first kids pic to open since Mufasa: The Lion King at Christmas and Moana 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at Thanksgiving (all these weeks later, all three films remain in the top 10 chart, which is quite a feat). Universal’s PG-rated Wicked has...

‘Dog Man’ Breaks January Box Office Record On Opening Weekend
Image
It wasn't Wolf Man, and it certainly wasn't Better Man, but Dog Man has dominated the January box office. Based on the children's graphic novel of the same name by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man is a spin-off and story within the story of Captain Underpants, which got a DreamWorks Animated movie back in 2017. In a premise that sounds like kids' first body horror, Dog Man sees a dog's face sewn onto a man's body to become a supercop while going up against many different types of villains.

According to Deadline, Dog Man brought an impressive $35.3 million in its opening weekend based on the estimates (final numbers will be recorded Monday morning). This easily gives Dog Man the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far, beating out the weekend of Jan. 5, 2025, where Mufasa: The Lion King grossed $23 million in its third weekend of release. Dog Man is the second highest-grossing opening for...

Box Office: ‘Dog Man’ Shows Bite With $36 Million Opening Weekend
Image
“Dog Man” enjoyed a barking good start at the domestic box office, collecting a leading $36 million from 3,885 North American cinemas in its first weekend of release.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s animated canine-crime-fighting film, set in the “Captain Underpants” universe, opened at the higher end of expectations thanks to great buzz and pent-up demand for family offerings. Moviegoers awarded the film an “A” grade on CinemaScore, signaling a long tail in theaters.

Another newcomer, Warner Bros. and New Line’s satirical sci-fi thriller “Companion,” debuted at No. 2 with $9.5 million from 3,285 theaters. The R-rated film added a soft $5.5 million from 60 overseas markets for a grand total of $15 million. Still, those ticket sales are solid since “Companion” cost an economical $10 million to produce (not including its marketing spend). With stellar reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid audience feedback (“B+” on CinemaScore), box office watchers suggest the film could become a late-January/ early-February sleeper hit.

Dog Man Review: We Had Fun With This Kid Flick
Image
Plot: A dog-human hydrid cop tries to save his city from a villainous orange cat.

Review: As a longtime fan of Dav Pilkey’s set of Dog Man graphic novels, and both the Captain Underpants movie and Netflix series, my expectations were a little higher than most people in my age bracket. Ever since I first cracked open the first set of graphic novels to read with my son, we’ve both been hooked on the quirky humor and heartwarming stories. Now, all these years later, seeing these beloved characters come to life on the big screen is a treat for fans old and new.

Written and directed by Peter Hastings, who also provides the voice, or rather “bark,” for Dog Man, the film features a stellar voice cast that brings an infectious energy to every scene. Pete Davidson shines as the hilariously over-the-top villain Petey the Cat, while Lil Rel Howery...

Box Office: ‘Dog Man’ Wagging Away on Top With $10.8 Million Opening Day, ‘Companion’ Sparks in Second
Image
Who let “Dog Man” out? Universal Pictures did, and the party is nice, the party is pumpin’ for the studio, as the DreamWorks Animation caper earned $10.8 million across Friday and preview screenings. That’s the biggest opening day gross yet for this still very young year.

Playing in 3,885 locations, “Dog Man” is now fetching what’s projected to be a $35 million opening weekend. That’d handily outperform the $23 million debut for “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which adapted another series of graphic novels by children’s author Dav Pilkey and was released in 2017 by the now-Disney-owned 20th Century Fox.

That’s a very good start for “Dog Man,” which already had an achievable threshold for success being produced at a $40 million budget, a much more modest investment than most studio animated features. Reviews lean positive, but audiences flipped for it, with moviegoer survey firm Cinema Score polling opening crowds to a glowing A grade.

If you have a little one in your life or at the very least know someone with a kid under 10, there’s a good chance they know who Dog Man is. The popular series of graphic novels by Dav Pilkey is a spin-off of his also popular Captain Underpants series and follows a supercop who is half-dog and half-man. The aforementioned tighty whities-clad hero got his chance on the big screen eight years ago, to surprisingly amusing results. Now, it’s the canine hero’s turn in the practically titled animated comedy,Dog Man. The latest from DreamWorks Animationpromises a high-energy comedy that is sure to keep children entertained for 90 minutes while giving the adults in the audience a handful of chuckles. That isn’t an insult to the movie. While Dog Man doesn’t reach the heights of some of the animation studio’s recent releases such asThe Wild...

‘Dog Man’ Review: Cheerfully Chaotic Kid Flick Will Delight Young Fans and Entertain Tolerant Parents
Image
Let’s make this easy: your mileage on “Dog Man” is going to depend entirely on whether you’ve got a Dav Pilkey fan in your life. And if you’re already lost, take it on faith that this probably isn’t the movie for you. But if your house has teetering piles of Pilkey’s bestselling graphic novels — which include various installments of both “Dog Man” and “Captain Underpants,” and which are pitched squarely at scatologically-inclined elementary-schoolers — rest easy: Peter Hastings’ big-screen adaptation does full, chaotic justice to its source material. The kids will love it. And actually, you might, too.

Writer-director Hastings, whose work on similarly anarchic efforts like “Animaniacs” and “Pinky and the Brain” makes him an ideal choice to helm this particular project, is clearly a fan himself. He also developed the televised “Epic Tales of Captain Underpants” series, and stays totally true to Pilkey’s distinctive brand of skewed silliness.

Box Office Predictions: Dog Man to take a bite out of Companion’s box office?
Image
So what exactly is Dog Man anyway? That’s the question I asked myself when I first saw the trailer for Dreamworks/Universal’s latest animated flick, which should post the highest opening weekend since the holidays. A spin-off of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, this sports an all-star cast that includes Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Rickey Gervais and more. The Captain Underpants movie was a solid hit, making over $70 million domestically, and with little in the way of competition for family audiences this weekend, it will easily top the box office with about $25 million.

It should be followed by New Line Cinema’s Companion, which is posting incredible reviews (our own Tyler Nichols loved it) but might have its opening muted by the fact that the trailers and reviews are purposefully vague in an effort to prevent spoiling the big twist the movie is supposed to have.

Film Review: Lackluster ‘Dog Man’ Barks Up an Unfunny Tree
Image
Chicago – A Big ‘Arf’ of rejection for this animated mutt that fails to fetch many laughs. Source book author Dav Pilkey (“Captain Underpants”) came up with Dog Man while in the second grade, and that’s about the upper age limit of those who may still find these sort of dim-witted antics entertaining.

After a gruesome accident, a cop and his trusty dog are injured and surgeons sew the dog’s head onto the cop’s body. So Dog Man (vocal effects by Peter Hastings) is a crime fighter who loses focus whenever a ball is around and other assorted dog related behaviors. He lives in a dog house and that’s about it. His arch nemesis is Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson) … a megalomaniacal cat out to take over the world with various harebrained contraptions, but is constantly thwarted by Dog Man. The movie is largely based on the first few Dog Man books,...
