For me, one of the best parts of being a movie lover is discovering films that haven’t built a massive audience. There’s something undeniably exhilarating about unearthing a diamond in the rough. Speaking of a diamond in the rough, I suspect that the upcoming horror film Soul Reaper (Respati) will resonate in its native Indonesia. But I doubt it will break out on the same level Stateside. Even the most effective international efforts filmed in a language other than English seem to be a hard sell for American audiences.
With that said, the Soul Reaper trailer shows a certain promise, and I’m looking forward to checking the film out in its entirety soon. If you’re game to scope the trailer, we have you covered. The newly released preview (which debuted as a Bloody Disgusting exclusive) is available for you to scope in the player below!

Sequel to the great Satan's Slaves, “Communion” is the first Indonesian film to be released in IMAX format, and a huge box office success which has already become the third highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time, with 6.3 million viewers.
Satan's Slaves 2: Communion” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
The film begins in the 50's actually, when a photographer is “invited” by a friend into a truly hellish setting, where a number of bodies have been exhumed and used for some sort of satanic ritual, with the friend asking the photographer to do everything in his power to let people know about what is happening. Back in the 80s, several years after they managed to save themselves from the terrible events that resulted in the death of their mother and the youngest sibling, Ian, the family are now living in a block of flats. Satan’s Slaves: Communion, or Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion if you prefer, is the newest film from Indonesian writer/director Joko Anwar, It’s no secret I’m a fan of his work and with it being three years since his last film, Impetigore, I was quite ready to see his sequel to the film that brought him international attention, Satan’s Slaves.
The film opens in 1955 with Budiman, the journalist from the first film, being brought to a local observatory where several corpses are arranged as if they were at prayer. There are lots of footprints leading from the cemetery to the building, and the corpses all have muddy feet. The government wants to cover it up but one local official asks him to get the word out.

Festival regular Edwin delivers a withering critique of masculinity with the enjoyably gritty if over-obvious “Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash.” Usually when films deal with impotence, they tend to be coy or jokey, but there’s no beating around the bush here: Erectile dysfunction is the theme, with all the implications of disempowerment and emasculation the issue implies.
As metaphor, impotence is used to make a broader critique of a toxic culture that puts so much emphasis on virility, but that just gives the filmmaker license to make garish use of plot-heavy twists and turns boasting plenty of decently choreographed fight sequences that must have immediately appealed to Fatih Akin, whose Bombero Int’l came onboard as co-producer. Given the level of stylized violence together with playful genre elements as well as a topic sure to get a rise out of viewers, it’s not hard to imagine festival audiences having fun.

An official Berlinale Panorama selection from Indonesia earlier this year, Something in the Way comes from director Teddy Soeriaatmadja following his 2011 well acclaimed Lovely Man. with cast Reza Rahadian, Ratu Felisha, and Verdi Solaiman. (Reza Rahadian played as former Indonesia president in last year Indonesia top grossing film Habibie & Ainun).I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, since it doesn't have a theatrical release date in Indonesia -- maybe due to its more indie nature, production, and distribution, or because of sensitive thematic issues -- but Lovely Man is one of the best Indonesia pictures i watched last year. and this trailer looks promising. Here's the official synopsis. Check out the trailer below! Ahmad is a taxi driver in Jakarta. He is addicted...
