2025 is halfway over, and at this point, I am realizing that most of the movies I was excited about this year have been a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean that there were no good movies released this as there have been some extremely entertaining ones. But for this article we are only compiling the best of the best films that were released as Prime Video originals this year.

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

28 Years Later (In Theaters) Credit – Sony Pictures

28 Years Later is a post-apocalyptic coming-of-age horror film directed by Danny Boyle from a screenplay by Alex Garland. Deep Cover Features a Lotr Mini Reunion You Blinked and Missed
Image
If you’ve already streamed Deep Cover, you might want to rewind a moment. Prime Video’s latest British action-comedy Deep Cover delivers a unique blend of improv, crime, and satire. Interestingly, there’s a moment in the movie that The Lord of the Rings fans definitely won’t want to miss.

Yes, the two Lotr actors, Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean, have shared the screen again. While there is no mention of Middle-earth, elves, or the fallen Fellowship members, their reunion happens in the most unlikely place. In this British comedy-drama, their shared scenes are short; you’d be forgiven for missing them. But for Lord of the Rings fans, it’s a blink and you miss it moment of pure movie magic.

Bryce Dallas Howard Reveals Which Popular Joker Actor (and Former Co-Star) She Had the 'Biggest Crush' On
Image
Bryce Dallas Howard may be known for her roles in three Jurassic Worldmovies and the 2011 film The Help, but in 2004, she starred alongside a future Oscar winner in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. In the movie, Howard plays Ivy Walker, the visually impaired daughter of Elder Edward Walker (William Hurt) in the mystery-thriller that comes complete with Shyamalan’s signature twists and turns.

Howard’s Ivy character was the love interest of Lucius Hunt, played by Joker’sJoaquin Phoenix. Phoenix would go on to win an Academy Award for his portrayal of the DC villain in 2019’s Joker. Howard, who is now starring in the Prime Video film Deep Cover, is now revealing that she had a huge crush on Phoenix when she was a child.

Playing Phoenix’s Love Interest Was a No-Brainer for Howard

Orlando Bloom, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Nick Mohammed in Deep Cover (2025)
Deep Cover Interview: We chat with Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed
Orlando Bloom, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Nick Mohammed in Deep Cover (2025)
Last week, Prime Video dropped a nifty little action comedy flick called Deep Cover. Directed by Tom Kingsley, who directed an impressive indie comedy several years back called Black Pond, and is best known for his work on the hit comedy series Ghosts (the UK version), the movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Ted Lasso breakout Nick Mohammed as failing improv actors who are recruited by the police to execute drug buys. Of course, as in any movie where someone goes undercover, they get “in too deep” and have to contend with some bad guys, who are led by none other than Ian McShane. Plus, Sean Bean is in it! How’s that for a cast!

Our man Alex Maidy gave this one a solid review, calling it a “quick watch and one that you will not forget”, with him also raving about Orlando Bloom’s comic performance,...

Star-Studded 93% Rotten Tomatoes Action Comedy Outpaces Tom Cruise and Jason Statham on Global Streaming Charts
Image
There are hundreds of captivating movies streaming on Prime Video right now, but one of the more recent additions to the platform has surpassed two major stars on streaming charts. Deep Cover is the latest original movie from Prime Video. After earning a strong 93% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 79% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, the film has landed in the #3 spot on Prime Video's top 10 list, behind only The Accountant 2 and The Better Sister. To reach the third spot, Deep Cover had to pass Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper, which has been a streaming phenomenon for over a year, and Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, which has been revived on the streamer thanks to the release of his latest Mission: Impossible movie. It’s also ahead of White Chicks, the 2004 cult classic starring Terry Crews.

New Prime Video Action Movie With 93% Rt Score Quickly Climbs Streaming Charts Just Days After Release
Image
A new Prime Video action movie has quickly climbed the streaming charts, just days after premiering. Incorporating original and Amazon MGM Studios content, among other movies and TV shows, Prime Video houses many popular releases, including Red, White, & Royal Blue and Totally Killer. The streaming service has also adapted various Tom Clancy novels and characters in Without Remorse and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Another successful Prime series is Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson, which has been praised by audiences for its stunt work and fight sequences.

Prime Video continues releasing action-heavy movies, most of which perform well statistically and feature recognizable actors. The Tomorrow War, following Dan Forester (portrayed by Chris Pratt) as he fights a futuristic battle, set viewership records in 2021 and led to sequel development. Since then, Prime has launched a highly successful Road House remake, as well as Canary Black and the Viola Davis action thriller G20.

Colin Trevorrow Talks Producing ‘Deep Cover,’ the Return of ‘Jurassic World’ and Star Wars Detachment
Image
Colin Trevorrow has his eye on the next generation of filmmakers.

After shepherding his Jurassic World trilogy to the box-office tune of nearly $4 billion worldwide, the filmmaker turned his attention to his production banner, Metronome Film Company. Trevorrow’s mission is to create opportunities for up-and-coming filmmakers in the same way that Steven Spielberg once did for him on 2015’s Jurassic World.

“Because I’ve had some success in my career, my absolute top priority is not just paying it forward, but also being able to introduce new talent to move us forward,” Trevorrow tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We don’t have farm teams in Hollywood, and I think that it’s a responsibility of filmmakers to identify who’s next. A lot of these icons that we have now were identified by another filmmaker, and that’s something I would love to have on my record.”

'Deep Cover's Rotten Tomatoes Score is No Laughing Matter
Image
At first glance, you wouldn't think that a movie about a bunch of improv actors becoming police informants would strike a chord with so many people, but that's just what Prime Video's latest, Deep Cover, has done. Premiering yesterday, June 12, the British action comedy directed by Tom Kingsley has landed a stellar 92% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans are equally impressed with the new film, as they've rated it 82% on the Popcornmeter.

"Deep Cover is exactly the type of twist-filled action comedy with gags, guns, and gangsters that will delight fans who enjoy movies that have the madcap spirit of Guy Ritchie's early films," said Carla Hay from Culture Mix in her review. Guy Ritchie's early films, you say? Sign us up! Glenn Kenny from the New York Times is another critic who had high praise for the movie, adding:

"The ensemble is packed with seasoned acting professionals across the board,...

Bryce Dallas Howard's New Improv Comedy Gets a Standing Ovation on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Although her last film, Argylle, failed to catch on with audiences, that hasn't slowed Bryce Dallas Howard down at all. Her action-packed new improv comedy feature, Deep Cover, pairing her with Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed, among others, released on Prime Video on Thursday and immediately killed it with critics and audiences. The film debuted with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and, heading into its second day on the platform, has kept viewers engaged with a strong 92% Tomatometer rating and an 82% audience score so far. Compared to Argylle's 33% critics' score and 70% audience score, it's a big bounceback for Howard, giving her and her co-stars a chance to flex both their comedic and action chops to hilarious lengths.

Deep Cover hails from director Tom Kingsley and reunites Howard with Jurassic World writer-director Colin Trevorrow, who penned the script with Derek Connolly, Ben Ashenden, and Alexander Owen. In the eyes of critics,...

Deep Cover Review: Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom improvise a surprisingly good action-comedy
Image
Plot: Kat, an improv comedy teacher, is questioning if she’s missed her shot at success. When an undercover cop offers her the role of a lifetime, she recruits two of her students to infiltrate London’s gangland by impersonating dangerous criminals.

Review: Count me as surprised, but Deep Cover is very funny. With the trailer dropping just a month ago, the Prime Video exclusive debuted on the streaming service today. Starring a pretty solid cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed, Deep Cover looked like the type of forgettable vehicle that often gets relegated to a digital premiere these days. Nevertheless, the film, co-written by Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, is a hilarious comedy full of violence, profanity, and engaging characters. Clocking in at just over ninety minutes, Deep Cover is counterprogramming used to complement summer box office tentpoles. Luckily,...

Deep Cover (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Can Three Misfits Outwit the Underworld and Escape Unscathed?
Image
Tom Kingsley’s “Deep Cover” (2025) is an energetic, self-aware, and unabashedly rollicking time at the movies. As gleefully ridiculous as it is, a vibrant blast of disguise, the film employs performativity in a congruent relationship with undercover police work. Both are established as being in sync, buoyed by an ability to put on acts that can knock down targets and villains. What is fundamentally needed is pure conviction, one that allows others to believe in your projection and fall for traps. Kingsley orchestrates it with giddy delight. There’s an innocence with which the film unravels, bringing charm and thrill alike.

The emphasis isn’t so much on heightened tension and escalating stakes as it is on the anticipation of the impersonation successfully working. It enormously helps the ensemble is terrific and game, bringing bite and sass. Every actor brings a lively energy, a bundle of amiable nerves which keeps the film steadily afloat.

‘Deep Cover’ Movie Summary & Spoilers: Did Metcalfe Get Caught?
Image
Tom Kingsley’s Deep Cover doesn’t really bring anything new to the table if we talk about the basic storyline and the plot points, but it is the performances of the actors that make it an entertaining watch. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, and Paddy Considine were able to create moments of genuine laughter, and they made sure that the audience didn’t lose interest or get bored. That said, let’s find out what happened in the film and how an improv artist, an actor, and a corporate employee became undercover agents.

Spoiler Alert

How did Kat, Marlon, and Hugh become undercover agents?

Colin Trevorrow Knows How Heartbreaking Filmmaking Can Be — He Wants to Change That with His Own Production Company
Image
Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow is not prone to quoting his own movies in conversation, but when he sat down with IndieWire for late morning coffee earlier this week in New York City, one of his own lines seemed pretty apt to the interview at hand.

“There’s a line in the third ‘Jurassic’ movie, this little speech that Jeff Goldblum gives where he’s like, ‘They give you a lot of promotions very quickly and they don’t think that you’re going to look around and notice that they’re exploiting your fascination with these,’ and he holds up a little dinosaur,” Trevorrow said. “That whole thing was about this idea that our love for the things that we grew up on — cinema in general and specifically those franchises — run so deep that, in some ways, I don’t want to say you could be taken advantage of, because I appreciate [my opportunities] deeply,...

Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed star in an entertaining odd-trio crime caper with turns by Sean Bean and Paddy Considine

Producer and screenwriter Colin Trevorrow has co-created this amiable, high-concept action comedy about three hapless improv actors dragooned into going into deep cover to bust a drug ring. It’s entertaining, though I think some of the cast understand comedy better and more instinctively than others. It’s set in London (though Trevorrow might originally have imagined it set in LA or New York) and the credit is shared with his longtime writing partner Derek Connolly, and also with Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, the funny British double act known as the Pin, who also amusingly appear as two squabbling coppers with a Mitchell and Webb energy. The director is the talented Tom Kingsley, who has a substantial TV career and with Will Sharpe got a Bafta nomination in...

Deep Cover Review — Crime Comedy Is Light on Plot, Heavy on Laughs
Image
Deep Cover represents a sort of shot at redemption for star Bryce Dallas Howard. After starring in 2024’s abysmal spy comedy Argylle, she takes the lead in the Tom Kingsley-directed action comedy. And in a positive swing, Deep Cover is a much bigger success.

Deep Cover Plot

Howard plays Kat, a struggling actor working in London as an improv teacher. She is recruited by the local police to go undercover for small-time sting operations. Needing a team — scene partners, if you will — she brings in two of her students, Marlon (Orlando Bloom) and Hugh (Nick Mohammed).

But in their first sting, the trio “yes, ands” their way to a much deeper part of the London criminal underworld. Their handler, played by Sean Bean, insists they keep up the ruse in an effort to take down some of the city’s biggest players.

Deep Cover (2025) ‘Tribeca’ Movie Review: A Hysterical, Crisply Written Comedy of Errors that Hits All the Right Notes
Image
Tom Kingsley’s “Deep Cover” (2025) offers Bryce Dallas Howard something that Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” couldn’t: an investigative thriller plot that actually makes sense. Kingsley’s film has such a watertight script that no moment feels dull or dragged. It knows how to use every character without resorting to convoluted twists for the sake of cheap thrills. It also understands the strengths of its central cast to make the most of their skills. Take Nick Mohammed, for example. He is one of the breakout stars of “Ted Lasso,” who portrayed Nathan Shelly as an eternally petrified but well-meaning man, whose vulnerability ends up being his strength.

Kingsley’s film casts Mohammed in a fairly similar role, who is tired of being treated like garbage and feeling like a lost cause. It also casts Howard in a role that makes use of her casual liveliness, which helps underline her character’s internal pathos.

‘Deep Cover’ Review: Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom Play Improv Actors Working an Undercover Police Sting in a Winningly Silly Comedy
Image
The premise of Deep Cover is almost funny enough to carry the entire film: A trio of improv actors is recruited by the London police to go undercover on a low-level sting operation, on the theory that they can think on their feet. Fortunately, this comedy is more than its plot thanks to the hilariously straight-faced performances of Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed as the hapless actors who wind up embedded with dangerous London gangsters. The film approaches its action tropes with an effective sense of absurdity, but it’s the stars’ kinetic commitment to the bit that makes this relentlessly silly film work.

Howard brings energy and conviction to her role as Kat, an American in London whose visa has almost run out, along with her luck as an actor. Now she teaches improv classes to play the bills, and faces the pitying looks of her old friends.

‘Deep Cover’ Prime Video Review: Orlando Bloom Shines In This Lukewarm Crime Comedy Film
Image
Movies about characters who believe in the philosophy that you can fake it till you make it are a dime a dozen. For example, there’s Joel Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy, which is about a low-level clerk who becomes the CEO of a manufacturing company because its board of directors wants to tank its stocks, but he ends up making the establishment a huge success. Chandra Barot’s Don has a street musician named Vijay who is hired by Dsp D’Silva, because he looks exactly like the titular gangster, to infiltrate Don’s gang. But when D’Silva dies, Vijay has to find a way to prove he isn’t the real deal. Richard Linklater’s Hit Man has a professor of psychology pretending to be a hitman to weed out people who want to kill off someone, but he eventually gets too involved with a “client,” thereby prompting...

Deep Cover Star Bryce Dallas Howard Reveals How Much Improv There Was In Improv-Themed Film
Image
Amazon Studios' Deep Cover film follows three characters in a comedy-thriller that sees them evolve thanks to the classic art of Improv. The movie follows Bryce Dallas Howard (Kat), Nick Mohammed (Hugh), and Orlando Bloom (Marlon)—two improv actors and one wannabe improv performer—who are given the opportunity to utilize their acting skills to go undercover for the police.

Deep Cover stars Bryce Dallas Howard (Kat), Nick Mohammed (Hugh), and Orlando Bloom (Marlon) sat down with The Direct's Russ Milheim to discuss their latest film, and how each of their characters finds their voices and confidence through the act of Improv. Deep Cover, directed by Tom Kingsley, starts streaming on Amazon's Prime Video on June 12, 2025.

Mohammed teased that his character might "Possibly [have] the biggest journey of the three in terms of his confidence," while Howard noted that her character figures out that her improv teacher skills might be "kind of her superpower.

Deep Cover (2025)
Image
There’s an ingenious thought at the centre of Deep Cover: if undercover work is, effectively, Method acting, what would happen if you put an improv group — whose very instinct is to 'yes, and' a situation — into minor sting operations? Tom Kingsley's comedy feature not only commits conceptually to that idea — it does so structurally, too, barrelling forward as it throws our heroes into situations of increasing danger and absurdity.

That initial idea came from Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and his writing partner Derek Connolly; their screenplay was retooled by British comedy duo The Pin — aka Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, briefly seen in Jurassic World Dominion — and relocated to London. The joyous absurdity of the duo's lockdown sketch videos is largely intact here, as Deep Cover both leans into tropes and subverts them to pull off sizeable laughs.

Deep Cover is well constructed, committing to the bit in the gag department.

Deep Cover Review: A Script for Chaos, Left Unread
Image
We exist in the quiet desperation of the roles we are given, and sometimes, in the roles we invent to escape. Deep Cover begins here, in this space of profound want. We meet three souls adrift in the London fog of their own perceived failures: Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard), an improv teacher whose own life feels static; Marlon (Orlando Bloom), an actor shackled to the ghost of a pizza advertisement, yearning for the gravitas of a new skin; and Hugh (Nick Mohammed), a man so lost in the digital architecture of his It job that human connection is a foreign script.

They are a congregation of the unfulfilled. Into this void steps a grizzled authority figure, Billings (Sean Bean), with a proposition that is both absurd and seductive: to use the art of invention to infiltrate the underworld. He asks them not just to act, but to become. The central...

‘Deep Cover’ Review: Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed Mug Their Way Through a So-So Action Comedy
Image
“Deep Cover” opens on a quote — the adage that in comedy, as in battle, you must be prepared to die if you want to kill — that is low-hanging fruit for any snarky critics seeking an easy jab. In truth, however, this knockabout action farce neither dies nor kills, even as its onscreen body count ramps up: It just chugs along enthusiastically for 99 minutes, throwing about a lot of slapstick and a lot of quips, but only intermittently landing an outright laugh. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed as desperate improv comics improbably snared up in the London underworld, it’s busier than it is funny, more frenetic than dynamic, but watchable enough.

For producer and co-writer Colin Trevorrow, “Deep Cover” marks a return to the scrappier genre comedy of his breakthrough “Safety Not Guaranteed” after years on the big-budget franchise beat. His original screenplay, written with longtime collaborator Derek Connolly,...

Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed brought their crime-comedy caper “Deep Cover” to life through genuine friendship and collaborative improvisation, the trio revealed during a post-screening Q&a following the film’s world premiere as the Centrepiece Headliner at SXSW London on Wednesday night.

Three years ago, Taylor Swift brought her directorial debut short “All Too Well” and revealed her desire to continue working in film. This time, it’s Miley Cyrus who moves behind the camera with “Something Beautiful,” which is being billed as a “one-of-a-kind pop opera.”

This year’s festival isn’t just about the pop culture icons — though it will premiere new documentaries on Metallica, De La Soul and Billy Joel. Tribeca’s nonfiction lineup also includes intimate looks at news legends, sushi masters and even a giant manta ray named “Willy Wow.”

Then there are films that put a meta-twist on things by having real-life fathers and daughters...
