2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

Bryce Dallas Howard may be known for her roles in three Jurassic Worldmovies and the 2011 film The Help, but in 2004, she starred alongside a future Oscar winner in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. In the movie, Howard plays Ivy Walker, the visually impaired daughter of Elder Edward Walker (William Hurt) in the mystery-thriller that comes complete with Shyamalan’s signature twists and turns.

Last week, Prime Video dropped a nifty little action comedy flick called Deep Cover. Directed by Tom Kingsley, who directed an impressive indie comedy several years back called Black Pond, and is best known for his work on the hit comedy series Ghosts (the UK version), the movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Ted Lasso breakout Nick Mohammed as failing improv actors who are recruited by the police to execute drug buys. Of course, as in any movie where someone goes undercover, they get “in too deep” and have to contend with some bad guys, who are led by none other than Ian McShane. Plus, Sean Bean is in it! There are hundreds of captivating movies streaming on Prime Video right now, but one of the more recent additions to the platform has surpassed two major stars on streaming charts. Deep Cover is the latest original movie from Prime Video. After earning a strong 93% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 79% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, the film has landed in the #3 spot on Prime Video's top 10 list, behind only The Accountant 2 and The Better Sister. To reach the third spot, Deep Cover had to pass Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper, which has been a streaming phenomenon for over a year, and Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, which has been revived on the streamer thanks to the release of his latest Mission: Impossible movie. A new Prime Video action movie has quickly climbed the streaming charts, just days after premiering. Incorporating original and Amazon MGM Studios content, among other movies and TV shows, Prime Video houses many popular releases, including Red, White, & Royal Blue and Totally Killer. The streaming service has also adapted various Tom Clancy novels and characters in Without Remorse and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Another successful Prime series is Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson, which has been praised by audiences for its stunt work and fight sequences.

Prime Video continues releasing action-heavy movies, most of which perform well statistically and feature recognizable actors. The Tomorrow War, following Dan Forester (portrayed by Chris Pratt) as he fights a futuristic battle, set viewership records in 2021 and led to sequel development. Since then, Prime has launched a highly successful Road House remake, as well as Canary Black and the Viola Davis action thriller G20.

Prime Video’s new action buddy comedy flick starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) just debuted on the streamer on June 12, and it’s already getting rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Deep Cover, which also features Sean Bean, Paddy Considine (MobLand), and Ian McShane, currently has an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, with a slightly lower audience score of 79%.

In Deep Cover, Howard, Bloom, and Mohammed play three improv comics who are recruited by an undercover cop (Bean) to infiltrate London’s criminal underground. Dallas plays struggling comic and improv teacher Kat Boyles. Bloom and Mohammed play Marlon and Hugh, the two students she enlists to help her in her mission.

The Film Reunites Dallas and Jurassic World Writers

Deep Cover comes from director Tom Kingsley (Ghosts)and writers Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, Ben Ashton, and Alexander Owen. The film reunited Howard with several Jurassic Park franchise alums.

After shepherding his Jurassic World trilogy to the box-office tune of nearly $4 billion worldwide, the filmmaker turned his attention to his production banner, Metronome Film Company. Trevorrow’s mission is to create opportunities for up-and-coming filmmakers in the same way that Steven Spielberg once did for him on 2015’s Jurassic World.

“Because I’ve had some success in my career, my absolute top priority is not just paying it forward, but also being able to introduce new talent to move us forward,” Trevorrow tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We don’t have farm teams in Hollywood, and I think that it’s a responsibility of filmmakers to identify who’s next. Tom Kingsley’s “Deep Cover” (2025) is an energetic, self-aware, and unabashedly rollicking time at the movies. As gleefully ridiculous as it is, a vibrant blast of disguise, the film employs performativity in a congruent relationship with undercover police work. Both are established as being in sync, buoyed by an ability to put on acts that can knock down targets and villains. What is fundamentally needed is pure conviction, one that allows others to believe in your projection and fall for traps. Kingsley orchestrates it with giddy delight. There’s an innocence with which the film unravels, bringing charm and thrill alike.

The emphasis isn’t so much on heightened tension and escalating stakes as it is on the anticipation of the impersonation successfully working. It enormously helps the ensemble is terrific and game, bringing bite and sass. Every actor brings a lively energy, a bundle of amiable nerves which keeps the film steadily afloat.

Tom Kingsley’s Deep Cover doesn’t really bring anything new to the table if we talk about the basic storyline and the plot points, but it is the performances of the actors that make it an entertaining watch. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, and Paddy Considine were able to create moments of genuine laughter, and they made sure that the audience didn’t lose interest or get bored. It’s entertaining, though I think some of the cast understand comedy better and more instinctively than others. It’s set in London (though Trevorrow might originally have imagined it set in LA or New York) and the credit is shared with his longtime writing partner Derek Connolly, and also with Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, the funny British double act known as the Pin, who also amusingly appear as two squabbling coppers with a Mitchell and Webb energy. Deep Cover represents a sort of shot at redemption for star Bryce Dallas Howard. After starring in 2024’s abysmal spy comedy Argylle, she takes the lead in the Tom Kingsley-directed action comedy. And in a positive swing, Deep Cover is a much bigger success.

Deep Cover Plot

Howard plays Kat, a struggling actor working in London as an improv teacher. She is recruited by the local police to go undercover for small-time sting operations. Needing a team — scene partners, if you will — she brings in two of her students, Marlon (Orlando Bloom) and Hugh (Nick Mohammed).

But in their first sting, the trio “yes, ands” their way to a much deeper part of the London criminal underworld. Their handler, played by Sean Bean, insists they keep up the ruse in an effort to take down some of the city’s biggest players.

Tom Kingsley’s “Deep Cover” (2025) offers Bryce Dallas Howard something that Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” couldn’t: an investigative thriller plot that actually makes sense. Kingsley’s film has such a watertight script that no moment feels dull or dragged. It knows how to use every character without resorting to convoluted twists for the sake of cheap thrills. It also understands the strengths of its central cast to make the most of their skills. Take Nick Mohammed, for example. He is one of the breakout stars of “Ted Lasso,” who portrayed Nathan Shelly as an eternally petrified but well-meaning man, whose vulnerability ends up being his strength.

Kingsley’s film casts Mohammed in a fairly similar role, who is tired of being treated like garbage and feeling like a lost cause. It also casts Howard in a role that makes use of her casual liveliness, which helps underline her character’s internal pathos.

The premise of Deep Cover is almost funny enough to carry the entire film: A trio of improv actors is recruited by the London police to go undercover on a low-level sting operation, on the theory that they can think on their feet. Fortunately, this comedy is more than its plot thanks to the hilariously straight-faced performances of Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed as the hapless actors who wind up embedded with dangerous London gangsters. The film approaches its action tropes with an effective sense of absurdity, but it’s the stars’ kinetic commitment to the bit that makes this relentlessly silly film work.

Howard brings energy and conviction to her role as Kat, an American in London whose visa has almost run out, along with her luck as an actor. Now she teaches improv classes to play the bills, and faces the pitying looks of her old friends.

Movies about characters who believe in the philosophy that you can fake it till you make it are a dime a dozen. For example, there’s Joel Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy, which is about a low-level clerk who becomes the CEO of a manufacturing company because its board of directors wants to tank its stocks, but he ends up making the establishment a huge success. Chandra Barot’s Don has a street musician named Vijay who is hired by Dsp D’Silva, because he looks exactly like the titular gangster, to infiltrate Don’s gang. But when D’Silva dies, Vijay has to find a way to prove he isn’t the real deal. Richard Linklater’s Hit Man has a professor of psychology pretending to be a hitman to weed out people who want to kill off someone, but he eventually gets too involved with a “client,” thereby prompting...

There’s an ingenious thought at the centre of Deep Cover: if undercover work is, effectively, Method acting, what would happen if you put an improv group — whose very instinct is to 'yes, and' a situation — into minor sting operations? Tom Kingsley's comedy feature not only commits conceptually to that idea — it does so structurally, too, barrelling forward as it throws our heroes into situations of increasing danger and absurdity.

That initial idea came from Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and his writing partner Derek Connolly; their screenplay was retooled by British comedy duo The Pin — aka Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, briefly seen in Jurassic World Dominion — and relocated to London. The joyous absurdity of the duo's lockdown sketch videos is largely intact here, as Deep Cover both leans into tropes and subverts them to pull off sizeable laughs.

Nicola Walker (The Split) and Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows) will lead a new, six-part Disney+ original series, Alice and Steve (working title).

From the award-winning Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer), Alice and Steve follows lifelong best friends who see their world implode when the middle-aged Steve starts dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith). “Although both are no strangers to chaos and dubious decision-making, their once rock-solid friendship is turned upside down and tested to its limits — threatening their families, futures and everything in between,” a plot synopsis reads.

Joel Fry (Cruella) also stars as Alice’s husband Daniel, with Tyrese Eaton-Dyce (Sherwood) cast as her son Dom and Olivier-award-winning Marcia Warren (The Crown) starring as Alice’s mother, Val. Prime Video has released the official trailer for the action comedy Deep Cover, which will launch on the streaming service on June 12, 2025. The movie has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for violent content, language throughout, and drug use.

Deep Cover will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide as part of the Prime subscription. The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Director Tom Kingsley’s feature is set to begin streaming via Amazon Prime Video on June 12. Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno, Ian McShane and Sean Bean round out the cast.

Deep Cover centers on Kat (Howard), an improv teacher recruited by an undercover cop (Bean) to enlist two of her students (Bloom and Mohammed) to impersonate criminals as they try to stop crime in London.

“You were so good,” Bloom assures Mohammed during a tense moment. “You committed. It was inspiring.”

Later, Howard scolds Bloom by saying, “I told you not to escalate.” He replies, “It’s where the scene went.”

Kingsley (Doctor Who) helmed the film from a script credited to Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen. Trevorrow, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald serve as producers.
