Bryce Dallas Howard Goes Undercover in ‘Deep Cover’ But She is No Bryan Cranston’s Robert Mazur
Image
Bryce Dallas Howard has long been famed for all the star-studded portrayals she has given over the past more than three and a half decades that she has been active as an actress, mostly in the adventure, sci-fi, and thriller genres. After giving praiseworthy performances across numerous different genres, she now seems to be all set to enter the criminal field as well.

According to the latest reports, for her upcoming project, Howard is expected to go undercover in Amazon’s next crime-comedy, Deep Cover. But this, of course, will be nothing short of a new role for her, as Dallas Howard is no Bryan Cranston’s Robert Mazur, the character the respective actor played in his 2016 biographical masterpiece that trekked along similar lines.

In the 2016 crime thriller The Infiltrator, Cranston goes undercover as a federal agent who infiltrates the criminal empire of Pablo Escobar. A look inside the real-life operation to take down one of the world's greatest drug kingpins, The Infiltrator is a tense and entertaining thriller, and it is now available for streaming on Netflix.

The Infiltrator: Where Is The Real Robert Mazur Now?
Image
The 2016 crime drama movie The Infiltrator chronicles the true story of a federal agent who infiltrated a dangerous drug cartel led by Pablo Escobar. Reviews have called The Infiltrator stylishly crafted, as well as highlighting the scarcely believable details of its true story. Set in the 1980s, the film explores the dark world of organized crime and money laundering. That agent was Robert Mazur, who has since done much to raise awareness of ever-evolving laundering techniques. Mazur has also put a spotlight on the corruption of financial institutions involved with key drug cartels.

Mazur still does not reveal his face publicly due to the real threat to his life and his family, but he is an outspoken and prolific speaker and author. His work has not only inspired a great Bryan Cranston thriller replacement for fans of Your Honor, but continues to inform and inspire people from many walks of life,...

The Infiltrator True Story: 9 Changes The Movie Makes With Robert Mazur's Time Undercover
Image
The real-life story of Robert Mazur and his time undercover with the cartels is adapted into film in The Infiltrator, but some creative liberties are taken with the material. Bryan Cranston leads The Infiltrator's cast, playing Robert Mazur, who participates in the money laundering schemes of infamous criminals like Pablo Escobar, gathering information under the name Bob Musella. By helping criminals like Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt) launder their money, he earned enough trust and credibility with the cartels to help law enforcement take down the corrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International, as well as making over 100 arrests.

The Infiltrator is based on the memoir of Robert Mazur, which accounts his personal experiences working undercover. The adaptation is written by Elle Brown Furman and directed by Brad Furman. In the 1980s, Mazur was part of a law enforcement initiative called Operation C-Chase, which was created to infiltrate the criminal money laundering enterprise,...

The Infiltrator: What Really Happened To Informant Barry Seal
Image
Barry Seal was a real-life informant who appears as a character in The Infiltrator, but there's much more to his story that the film leaves out. In The Infiltrator's cast, Seal is played by actor Michael Par. In real life, Seal was an American airline pilot born in 1939 who became a drug smuggler for the cartel, working under Pablo Escobar. He began by transporting small quantities of marijuana in 1976, and by 1978, he was fully involved in transporting large shipments of cocaine. In 1981, he began working for the Medelln Cartel.

By that same year, the DEA was already onto Barry Seal's smuggling side hustle. In 1983, he was charged, and by 1984, Seal offered himself to law enforcement as an informant. He participated in two major undercover operations, leading to arrests not dissimilar to those made in The Infiltrator's ending, before answering for his own crimes in Florida and Louisiana. After his trials,...

Bryan Cranston's Breaking Bad Follow-Up Trending On Netflix Is A Great Reminder To Watch This Underrated 18-Year-Old Movie
Image
Bryan Cranston's 2016 film, The Infiltrator, is an excellent follow-up to Breaking Bad, but it's also a reminder to watch an underrated 2000s crime thriller. Cranston leads The Infiltrator's cast as Robert Mazur, a real-life figure who went undercover with the cartels in the 1980s, helping law enforcement take down major players that worked directly with Pablo Escobar, including Bank of Credit and Commerce International, the seventh-largest private bank in the world that was used in drug-related money laundering schemes.

The Infiltrator's real-life story and changes for the film are interesting to explore, especially since the movie is based on Robert Mazur's memoir of the same name. Mazur went undercover with the guise of "Bob Musella," earning the trust of drug lords and corrupt bankers alike. The movie might not be as well-made as some of the most incredible crime movies, but it's grounded in realism with Mazur's...

The Infiltrator: How Long The Real Robert Mazur Spent Undercover
Image
The 2016 crime drama The Infiltrator is based on the true story of Robert Mazur, a U.S. Customs agent who infiltrated a dangerous drug cartel led by Pablo Escobar. The film, praised in reviews for The Informants stylish direction, delves into the dark world of organized crime and money laundering and the real-life Robert Mazurs time as an undercover agent and IRS informant.

Mazur's daring undercover operations have continued to inspire and inform, thanks to his books on the topic and his interviews and talks. He remains a prominent voice in the fight against financial crime, educating audiences on the ever-evolving tactics of money launderers.

Robert Mazur Spent Five Years Undercover To Infiltrate Money-Laundering Schemes He Posed Under The Name Bob Musella

During a five-year undercover operation, Robert Mazur infiltrated high-level drug cartels, posing as a money launderer for cartel leaders. He went under the name Bob Musella (played by...

The Infiltrator Ending Explained: Was Robert Mazur Successful In Taking Down Pablo Escobar?
Image
The Infiltrator's ending sees Robert Mazur's years of undercover work come into effect with a major bust, leading to questions about the real-life history and the film's thematic implications. Bryan Cranston leads The Infiltrator cast, playing the dual lives of Robert Mazur and his undercover criminal counterpart, Bob Musella. As Musella, he helps drug lords of the cartel with laundering their money, hoping to gain favor and infiltrate their ranks, bringing him closer to higher-ups like Pablo Escobar.

While Mazur's work doesn't directly reach Pablo Escobar, the staged wedding between him and Kathy Ertz (Dianne Kruger), along with years of undercover work, leads to numerous arrests. Mazur spends the majority of the film building connections with the cartel, and his efforts manage to take down Bank of Credit and Commerce International, the seventh-largest private bank in the world, which was vital to the drug lords' money laundering schemes.

The Infiltrator Cast & Real-Life Character Guide
Image
Bryan Cranston's 2016 true crime drama film The Infiltrator features an elaborate cast based on real-life characters. Directed by Brad Furman and written by his mother Ellen Furman, The Infiltrator is based on the book of the same name by U.S. Customs Special Agent Robert Mazur, who Cranston plays in the film. Despite receiving mostly positive reviews upon its July 2016 theatrical release, The Infiltrator grossed $22 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of between $28 and $47 million. It ranks number 8 on Netflix's U.S. Top 10 Movies list at the time of writing.

While not typically considered among Bryan Cranston's best movies, The Infiltrator earned a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 72%. The narrative follows a dedicated agent who dives into the grimy underworld of money laundering and blurs the line between duty and deception. Cranston's Robert Mazur goes undercover as a corrupt businessman named Bob Musella who...

The Bryan Cranston Crime Thriller Flop That's Taking Over Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Netflix continues to be a place where initially poorly-received movies go to thrive. A number of 2024 releases, including the critically panned horror pic "Tarot" and the family film (and box office bust) "Harold and the Purple Crayon," have quickly climbed the streaming charts after hitting the streamer this year. Now, an already-forgotten 2016 biopic is getting the Netflix treatment.

The movie in question is called "The Infiltrator," and it just dropped on the streamer on November 1, 2024. It's worth noting that the film is also available on tons of other free and paid subscription services right now, including Paramount+, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, and Plex. But Netflix is still a massive, culturally dominant streamer, and its viewership data is now easily available thanks to sites like FlixPatrol. According to the data site, the movie was the sixth most-watched feature film title on Netflix as of November 5, 2024, ranking higher than recent Netflix Original...

The Infiltrator review – Bryan Cranston superb as drugs sting agent
The Breaking Bad star is brilliant in this crime thriller but complicated plotting slows it down

Based on the true story of a Us customs official who took on one of the biggest drugs cartels in history, this 1980s-set narco-thriller shares rather too much DNA with David O Russell’s American Hustle. Director Brad Furman evokes the period with a grainy, sandblasted look to the cinematography and a saturated colour palette that emphasises tequila and nicotine tones.

Bryan Cranston stars as Robert Mazur, the undercover customs agent who attempts the most complex sting of his life in order to take down part of Pablo Escobar’s network. Posing as money-laundering businessman Bob Musella, with a rookie agent (Diane Kruger) playing his fiancee, Kathy, Mazur befriends Escobar’s lieutenant, Roberto Alcaino. It’s a dynamic that is reminiscent of the genuine but fatally compromised warmth between Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner in Hustle.

The Infiltrator review – stodgy, shapeless Miami drug-ring caper
This tale of a federal agent who went undercover among Colombian drug lords, adapted from Robert Mazur’s memoir, is indulgent and interminable

Brad Furman gave us the smart La thriller The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011, which got me wondering if he shouldn’t be taking on adaptations of Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiaasen. Now he directs this stodgy, shapeless and almost endless Miami drug-ring drama starring its executive producer, Bryan Cranston. It feels like playing five hours of Grand Theft Auto. The Infiltrator is adapted from the memoir by Robert Mazur, a federal agent who went undercover among Colombian druglords associated with Pablo Escobar and helped bring down his crooked banking infrastructure; the screenwriter who adapted Mazur’s book is the director’s mother: Ellen Brown Furman. Cranston does a reasonable job as Mazur, the veteran undercover operative and happily married man who almost betrays himself at...

The Infiltrator Review
When first introduced to Bryan Cranston’s Robert Mazur in Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator, we believe him to be a high-flying cocaine dealer, such is the convincing nature of his portrayal. The Infiltrator
The entertainment industry is experiencing a kind of romantic fascination with narco culture as of late – an affair that’s been plenty fruitful so far, with Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario standing out as one of last year’s best movies and Netflix having just confirmed Narcos for another two seasons. Director Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator comes around just in time to capitalise on the cultural interest in South American cartel violence, then. Based on real life events, this crime thriller tells the story of Robert Mazur (Bryan Cranston), a U.S. Customs special agent who’s undercover work contributed to the take down of Pablo Escobar’s money-laundering organisation in the 1980s. Unfortunately, The Infiltrator fails to deliver on the promise of the fascinating real life events on which it’s based. While there is a relatively enjoyable thriller here, it’s buried beneath a little too much stylistic...

Secret Life of Pets Beats Ghostbusters at the Box Office
Ghostbusters (1984)
Heading into this weekend at the box office, it was expected to be a very close race between last weekend's winner The Secret Life of Pets and Sony Pictures' Ghostbusters reboot. As it turned out, both movies came in a bit under their weekend projections, but it still remained a close race, with The Secret Life of Pets coming out on top with $50.5 million in its second weekend in theaters. Ghostbusters wasn't too far behind, though, with a solid opening weekend of $46 million.

We were predicting that Secret Life of Pets will drop 40%, which would would put its second weekend total at $62.5 million, since most animated movies don't drop as much as other summer blockbusters. Box Office Mojo reports that The Secret Life of Pets dropped 51.5% with a healthy $11,541 per-screen average. This animated comedy has now taken in an impressive $203.1 million domestically and another $50.8 million internationally for a worldwide total of $253.9 million.

Exclusive Interviews: Benjamin Bratt Talks The Infiltrator
Crime thriller The Infiltrator takes a look at the real story of U.S. Customs agent Robert Mazur, who, in the 1980s, went undercover to take down infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Based on Mazur’s memoir, the always reliable Bryan Cranston portrays Mazur, who comes up with a scheme to get to Escobar by following the drug money and infiltrating the corrupt banks laundering the cash, using the alias “Bob Musella.” Still, there’s a cost to being involved in such deep undercover work, namely how agents can actually form friendships with the people they are eventually going to take down. For Mazur and his pretend fiancee (Diane Kruger), they become close with an Escobar lieutenant (Benjamin Bratt) and his wife, which makes things rather complicated.

At the recent L.A. press day for the film, we spoke with Bratt about the parallels between acting and going undercover,...

Review: The Infiltrator
Manuel here with a review of The Infiltrator which opened yesterday nationwide.

Fact: Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic is one of the most influential films of the 21st century. That’s not a qualitative assessment but an increasingly common thought that’s rankled in my brain. Can you believe Soderbergh actually struggled to get his film financed because Hollywood execs didn’t think audiences would want to watch an entire film about the drug trade?

Fast-forward to summer 2016 when USA is premiering Queen of the South, Netflix will bring us season 2 of Narcos, two competing El Chapo TV series are in development, and Bryan Cranston’s The Infiltrator joins an ever-growing list of films about the war on drugs that range from the sublime (Sicario) to the pedestrian (Blow) with everything in between (Savages, anyone?).

Bryan Cranston in The Infiltrator (2016)
One of the great things to come out of Breaking Bad, besides its standing as one of the best shows in TV history, is the emergence of Bryan Cranston as a screen-filling dramatic actor of the first rank. Why ‘The Infiltrator’ Director Brad Furman Abandoned Studio Films to Make Indies Again
Bryan Cranston in The Infiltrator (2016)
Brad Furman is a competitor. The director of films like the unexpected smash hit “The Lincoln Lawyer” (and, later, the Ben Affleck- and Justin Timberlake-starring disappointment “Runner Runner”) can’t quite pinpoint the source of that motivation — but it’s what’s driven his career since he made his first film, “The Take,” for less than a million dollars way back in 2007.

“I personally feel when somebody tells me I can’t do something, or I’m afraid of something, that’s typically when I dive in,” Furman recently told IndieWire.

The challenges that have pushed Furman haven’t exactly been unique – he’s one of any number of rising directors, mostly male, propelled to big studio features on the strength of one or two smash indie hits – but they have inspired him to do something pretty bold: Return to his indie roots to get films done the...

The Infiltrator Goes Deep Undercover but Comes Up Short
Bryan Cranston’s swagger helps save this clunky gangster movie (sort of). More of him in everything, please.Broad Green Pictures

The Infiltrator Review: A Brilliant Bryan Cranston Goes Deep Undercover
Bryan Cranston in The Infiltrator (2016)
If there is one thing that Hollywood has been able to seemingly churn out consistently at a reasonable quality ever since cocaine became a fashionable drug, it is crime dramas about cocaine. The Infiltrator happens to be the latest such movie, and it is another very good one, and that is in large part thanks to the brilliant work of Bryan Cranston in the lead role. When something is based on a true story, it always seems to elevate the material in these circumstances, and that very much happens to be the case here as well.

BroadGreen Pictures' The Infiltrator is based on a famous drug sting operation which was headed up by U.S. Customs official Robert Mazur (Cranston), who after a very long time attempting to slow Pablo Escobar's drug operation, gets the idea to follow the money instead of the drugs. This leads Mazur to dive deep...

The Infiltrator – Review
Bright high contrast colors; gritty cinematography that has the feel of grainy 35mm film stock; long tracking shots; and a cool soundtrack overstuffed with pop hits from the decade; all of this and much more make The Infiltrator a flashy film that is sure to ignite your senses. But this undercover drama is more than just a stylish and slick police procedural film. Despite having a strong air of familiarity, director Brad Furman delivers a cool and confident descent into global crime and corruption.

Based on a true story that opens in 1986, Bryan Cranston plays Robert Mazur, a former accountant for the U.S. government that goes undercover as money launderer Robert Musella in order to infiltrate the organization bringing cocaine into the States. However, Mazur’s plan isn’t to try to track down the drugs, but to follow the money trail that leads to the big man at the top: Pablo Escobar.

Review: The Infiltrator, A Decent Hero in a Decent Movie
Robert Mazur seems so normal. As played by Bryan Cranston, Mazur is an all-American good guy, an exceedingly decent man who is also a top-notch U.S. Customs official, an honest and dedicated employee, a loyal and loving husband and father. He refuses to cut corners in his line of work and resists all temptations that come his way, including those of a financial or sexual nature. He is, in other words, not at all what we've come to expect from undercover agents in motion pictures produced by Hollywood studios. The leading character in The Infiltrator is based on the real-life Mazur, who wrote about his experiences in his memoir of the same title. Mazur spent five years undercover, posing as a money launderer with connections...

Film Review: The Infiltrator
You’ve seen one drug cartel movie, you’ve seen them all, right? Almost, but not quite, if you spend some time with Bryan Cranston’s methodical portrayal of undercover secret agent Robert Mazur in The Infiltrator. Directed by Lincoln Lawyer’s Brad Furman, Cranston plays a stereotypical boy scout enmeshed in a stereotypical world of baddie drug dealers, doing the stereotypically right thing. But leave it to Cranston and his talent for multi-layered performance to elevate the movie beyond its conventional trappings and onto a ledge of respectability.

Mazur is a customs agent in the 1980s, egged on by his tough-as-nails boss (Amy Ryan) to catch her some bigger fish for their then-novel war on drugs. Nancy Reagan is in the White House, and she ain’t taking no prisoners. Surrounded by the sin and temptation of the decaying Florida landscape, Mazur realizes that if he follows the money...

‘The Infiltrator’ Review: Bryan Cranston Breaking Good This Time In Drug-World Thriller
Bryan Cranston in The Infiltrator (2016)
One of the nicest surprises among the loud and sometimes mind-numbing summer movie season is a new adult drama. The Infiltrator finds Bryan Cranston back in the world of drug trafficking, but this time the Breaking Bad Emmy winner is on the good side of the law in a pulse-pounding and first-rate true story based on former federal agent Robert Mazur’s memoir. In 1986, Mazur went deep undercover, ingeniously following the money trail all the way to the top of kingpin Pablo…...

Ghostbusters (1984)
Will Ghostbusters Win Big or Crash and Burn at the Box Office?
Ghostbusters (1984)
After a lackluster 4th of July holiday at the box office, Universal's animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets breathed new life into the sagging summer season last weekend with a whopping $104.3 million. This surprise hit will face two newcomers this Friday, Sony's Ghostbusters reboot and Broad Green Pictures' The Infiltrator, starring Bryan Cranston. If our predictions are accurate, it should be a close call at the box office, with Ghostbusters just barely beating out The Secret Life of Pets with $64 million.

Animated films don't normally suffer huge drops like many summer blockbusters, so we're predicting that Secret Life of Pets will drop 40%, which would would put its second weekend total at $62.5 million. Of course, with the top two so close together, it could very well turn out the other way around, with The Secret Life of Pets repeating atop the box office, so we'll have to wait and see.

We interview Bryan Cranston, Benjamin Bratt & more for The Infiltrator!
Remember when Bryan Cranston played a funny television dad on Malcolm in the Middle? With his recent and beyond incredible work, it's bit hard to think back to that. The Infiltrator Review
The Infiltrator is yet another average biopic carried by a watchable batch of performances and baffling pre-credits scrolling text that sums up how history was made by the acts of a few men. Specifically, how a massive 80s money laundering scheme was busted by one diehard U.S. Customs agent (Robert Mazur, whose tell-all was adapted by writer Ellen Sue Brown). Bryan Cranston stars and produces (a famous face to attract audiences), Brad Furman boasts directorial rights (a proven talent of Runner Runner/The Lincoln Lawyer fame), and period aesthetics strike free-flowing notes of nostalgia – in other words, expectations are set correctly and met with ease.

The story of Robert Mazur is one of espionage, drugs and Pablo freakin’ Escobar. Colombia was smuggling cocaine into America by the boatload, container load – however dealers could sneak it – and Ronald Regan was waging a war against the addicting infestation. This is where Mazur comes in,...

How Bryan Cranston’s ‘Infiltrator’ Role Is Totally Unlike His Own Life (Exclusive Video)
Bryan Cranston
For Bryan Cranston, being an actor and going undercover share some similarities — except when it comes to, say, taking down a notorious drug cartel. “If I mess up, I just do the scene over again,” the “The Infiltrator” star told TheWrap in a recent interview. “But the consequences for Bob Mazur was the operation could be totally blown, and two-and-a-half years of work down the drain — and that’s on the good side.” Also Read: 'The Infiltrator' Review: Bryan Cranston Crashes the Escobar Cartel In the movie, Cranston stars as Robert Mazur, the real-life U.S. customs agent who went undercover in the.

‘The Infiltrator’ Review: Bryan Cranston Crashes the Escobar Cartel
Bryan Cranston in The Infiltrator (2016)
Though “Breaking Bad” and its antihero Walter White are no more, it’s been a great year for Bryan Cranston. Less than two months ago he played a spectacular Lbj in HBO’s “All the Way,” and now he’s Robert Mazur, the federal agent who went undercover and cozied up to top brass in the Medellín cartel. In “The Infiltrator,” Florida-based U.S. Customs Agent Mazur has, like Cranston, a flair for convincing performances. But the stakes are about as high as they get: If Mazur’s turn isn’t spot-on persuasive, he’ll be gruesomely tortured and killed by Colombian drug lords.

Bryan Cranston Tries to Take Down Pablo Escobar in Trailer For ‘The Infiltrator’
It’s not often we get an adult-geared drama in the middle of the summer tentpole season, but Broad Green will deliver just that this July. The Infiltrator stars Bryan Cranston, coming off of his Oscar nomination for Trumbo, as a Federal agent who infiltrated Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene back in the mid-1980’s.

Director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) adapts the true story from Robert Mazur’s own biography, scripted by Ellen Brown Furman. The first trailer has now landed which shows off a kinetic drama, and certainly something with more energy than last fall’s dull Black Mass. Also starring Diane Kruger, John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Yul Vazquez, and Amy Ryan, check out the trailer and poster below.

Based on a true story, Federal agent Robert “Bob” Mazur (Bryan Cranston) goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1986 by posing as slick,...
