Cappy McGarr is an Emmy and NAACP Image Award nominated co-creator and Executive Producer of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, the national award for humor, and has championed the prize since its inception. In 2011, Mr. McGarr became one of only two people at the time to be appointed to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees by two different presidents.

In addition to his role at the Kennedy Center, Mr. McGarr has served as an Executive Producer of seven White House musical performances honoring music legends including Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, and Carole King. He is also a creator of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, and the Co-Founder and Executive Producer of the Lincoln Awards, which recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in providing opportunities and support to our nation's veterans and military families.

In 2021, Mr. McGarr published his memoir, titled The Man Who Made Mark Twain Famous: Stories from the Kennedy Center, the White House, and Other Comedy Venues.

Mr. McGarr is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and sits on the boards of The Foundation for the National Archives, The Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, and Ken Burns' Better Angels Society. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

A proud alum of the University of Texas at Austin, Mr. McGarr is the founder of The University of Texas sports journalism program at The Moody College of Communication and the University's annual McGarr Symposium in Sports Journalism. He is also a past chair of the University's Development Board.
