Hot 2018 Mipcom Titles: What Will Be The High-End Dramas & Breakout Formats To Watch Out For On The Croisette
Some 14,000 international TV executives, including around 5,000 buyers from over 100 countries, will be cruising down the Croisette in Cannes this weekend for the annual Mipcom market.

The sun is set to shine in the south of France and the major international distributors, including the Hollywood studios, will hope this helps shift their latest high-end dramas and non-scripted entertainment formats.

The Americans will be back in town, having largely given Mip TV in April a miss, with high-profile buyers from the FAANGs joining traditional buyers from the broadcast networks and cable stations. The likes of Apple’s Morgan Wandell, Hulu’s Craig Erwich, Amazon’s Cj Yu and Euro chief Georgia Brown, Facebook’s Toby Faulkner and Mina Lefevre and YouTube’s Luke Hyams are expected to be joined by Fox’s Rob Wade and teams from Bravo, FX, A+E Networks, Nat Geo and Discovery.

Hollywood talent chief Ari Emanuel will be...

Cinepocalypse 2018: ‘The Cop Baby’ Review
Stars: Elizaveta Arzamasova, Sergey Garmash, Yang Ge, Kseniya Lavrova-Glinka, Andrey Nazimov, Yan Tsapnik | Written by Andrey Zolotarev | Directed by Alexander Andrushenko

Sometimes there are films that come along that tap directly into my psyche, with plots so ridiculous, so outrageous, that they engage my “must-see” synapses… The Cop Baby is one such film. After all, how could I not want to see a film with a synopsis like this:

Having failed a large covert operation and being cursed by a vengeful fortune teller, Major Chromov is trapped inside a baby’s body. The only way for Major Chromov to return to his body is to finish the operation and hunt down the most dangerous crime boss of the local mafia as a M*******King Cop Baby.

Let’s get this out of the way first… The Cop Baby is no Cop and a Half. Nope, this is not played for laughs,...

Attraction (Prityazhenie) movie review: when Et is dreamy
MaryAnn’s quick take… It has a spectacular opening sequence, and features a few minor tweaks to alien-invasion tropes. But the teen romance at its center reduces this to a very inconsequential first contact. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction geek

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

A few years ago, Fedor Bondarchuk directed the first ever Russian film shot in 3D IMAX, the historical action drama Stalingrad, which was a huge box office hit there. Now he’s back with Attraction, another huge hit in 3D IMAX in Russia last year. The film is not, alas, being released in 3D IMAX in the UK, which is a shame only because the spectacle of its opening sequence might just about make the movie worth paying for, too experience it in such a dramatic format.
