Exclusive: The Sundance Institute has revealed the 9 fellows and 8 projects selected for its 2021 to 2022 Episodic Program.

The selected fellows are Aisha Bhoori (Pipe Dreams), Bridget McManus (The Family Pet), Corey Dashaun (Bottom Bitch), Elizabeth Palmore (Gives Good Death), Jeanette Lim and Marva Whitaker (Before the Apple), Jianna Maarten Saada (El Otro Lado), Mars Wolfe (The 1 & Only Mj Girls), and Meghan Ross (Here to Make Friends). Four of the 8 projects are live-action dramas, three are live-action comedies, and one is an adult animation.

This year marks the Episodic Lab’s return to in-person activities at the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah bookended by a digital pre-lab story development curriculum and its first annual Episodic Pitch Parlor hosted in Los Angeles in partnership with Xrm Media.

“This was a year of many firsts and I hope to continue reinventing new systems of support for bold creators who are going overlooked,” said Episodic Program Director Jandiz Estrada Cardoso.

We're officially into the second round of our March Madness Best Lesbian/Bi Character Ever poll, which means it's time for us to weigh in on our own favorites.

Bridget McManus: My pick is Dr. Arizona Robbins (Grey's Anatomy) because she represents a powerful lesbian, and actress Jessica Capshaw plays her like a real person. Robbins is incredibly intelligent, beautiful, quirky and her character is always consistent. I cherish consistency in a lady lovin' lady. The way Robbins dealt with the pregnancy of her girlfriend was spot on, and I think Hillary Clinton should consider her for her 2016 presidential running mate.

Ali Davis: Since Xena is not in the running (Heather Hogan, you and I are in a fight), I'm going to choose Bo from Lost Girl because she illustrates what bisexuality is like so well.

Dara Nai: I give the old movie, Two Mules for Sister Sara, two rosary-clutching thumbs up, mostly because Shirley MacLaine plays Sister Sara, a cigar-smoking, whiskey-drinking nun who runs around 1800s Mexico with a cynical mercenary (a pre-chair-talking Clint Eastwood), fighting the French. She uses him and abuses him, handles him and bandages him, and ultimately outwits him when she reveals her secret at the end of the film. The name calling ("You! You foul, loathsome, evil, little cockroach!") the way he whimpers when she's got her wand pressed against his jugular, the moment she turns away when she realizes he's not good enough for her magic, then — Whamo! — a full-on Muggle-punch to the face. Sort-of-always-angry Hollywood blogger Nikki Finke posted a rant in her Emmy blog about how hot women can’t be funny.

No. No no no no no. No. Did I mention no? Also no. No.

Way to “defend” women in comedy by missing all the points while contributing to dumb sexist stereotypes at the same time.

The problem is not that Hollywood only hires hot women, who cannot possibly be funny. The problem is that Hollywood tends to hire only the funny women who are also hot.

And that problem is perpetuated when people — including other women — slice women up into categories based on hotness instead of, say, judging skilled and talented women purely on their skill and talent. Suggesting that the many funny women who are also attractive must not really be one of those things is stupid...

The trailer for horror film Blood Fare has been released online after having its world premiere on the Big City Comics video wall at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

It's the fourth film from writer-director J.A. Steel following her horror shocker Denizen, supernatural thriller Salvation and action feature The Third Society.

Steel attended the premiere with cast members Gil Gerard (famous for his lead role in the TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) and Savannah Ostler (Vengeance, Splattercontainer Scream Queen October 2010).

Also there was Jeff Kaufman, creator of the new graphic novel Terminal Alice, published by Big City Comics and centring on five female contract killers who find they each have a price on their head and must work together to find out who wants them dead. On March 16, out director Nisha Ganatra's new film, Beholder, will premiere as part of the Itvs/ PBS series FutureStates. FutureStates is a modern day Twilight Zone series for which ten filmmakers were selected to each make an episode that takes place in the future and explores a political idea in the realm of a fictional film. Filming has wrapped on Blood Fare, a Civil War ghost story whose cast includes Gil Gerard, star of the classic sci-fi series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

Award-winning writer/director Ja Steel today announced she and co-producer Christian Koch had completed principal photography as the first set of official images from the production were released. The stills are featured below; the latest poster is above.

Comedian Bridget McManus attended the Los Angeles premiere party for The Arrangement, the newest reality series on Logo (AfterEllen.com's parent company). The show, features ten designers competing for the title of “America’s Best Floral Designer," a brand new Smart Car and $25,000 in cash.

At the party, Bridget talked to host Gigi Levangie Grazer and head judge Eric Buterbaugh, florist to President Obama, Oprah and the Queen. She also caught up with the colorful contestants and Project Runway designer Santino Rice.

Space Girls is the newest sci-fi space opera comedy from filmmaker/writer Stacie Ponder (Ghostella's Haunted Tomb) and this time, its even funnier. And Space-y-er. Because it is set in space. The female-character driven series will air on late-night/early-morning TV on the Logo Channel show Bridget McManus's That Time of the Month, hosted by comedien Bridget McManus.

"Space Girls was borne of my desire to make a movie about...umm...girls in space," says Ponder about the imeptus to committ such an act...

Space Girls features dolls voiced by Amanda Diebert, Paula Haifley, Heidi Martinuzzi and Ponder herself. And Giant Space Cats that attack with eye lasers. The characters are named things like 'Tuffie Firefist'. That's pretty awesome.

This weekend in Los Angeles, the Human Rights Campaign (Hrc), the nation’s largest Glbt civil rights organization, held their Annual Awards Gala. This year Kathy Griffin received an Ally for Equality Award.

Comic Bridget McManus (Brunch with Bridget) worked the red carpet for us at the event and asked Kathy for tips on kissing girls and what kind of lesbian she would be. She also talked to Meredith Baxter about life post-coming out.

Lesbian/bi visibility in entertainment today is a mass of contradictions. It's both better and worse than it was when I started writing about it more than seven years ago.

There are more lesbian talk show hosts than ever before on network TV, but still very few fictional lesbian characters on broadcast or cable TV.

We now have well-developed, prominent lesbian characters and superheroes in comics — from Willow to Batwoman — but even the most minor lesbian characters are missing from, or "straightened out" in, most studio theatrical releases. Sometimes an entire lesbian subculture is de-gayed, as demonstrated in Whip It.

Nancylee Myatt, Maeve Quinlan, and the rest of 3Way folks recently released a full episode of the fake show-within-a-show Ladycops, starring Liz Vassey (CSI) and Christina Cox (Blood Ties, Defying Gravity), that they first introduced in episode six of 3Way.

Cox and Vassey play straight actresses (Lara Lancaster and Mikki Majors) who hate each other, playing lesbian detectives (Sienna and Jo) secretly in love with each other on the crime show Ladycops — which is itself a reference to the lesbian detectives Cox and Vassey played in the pilot for a real show called Nikki & Nora, which was almost picked up for broadcast TV in 2004.

Confused yet? But in a good way, right?
