According to a recent analysis from the Consumer Technology Association (Cta) on Trump’s proposed tariffs on imports, it has all the potential to send the prices of various hardware to skyrocket at an alarming rate, making gaming less accessible for millions of players.

Dr. Seuss Declared Halloween ‘Grinch Night’ in This Delightfully Dark TV Special from 1977
Image
On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: It’s a Wonderful Night for Eyebrows!

Don’t tell the Seventh-day Adventists, but Halloween and Christmas are inextricably linked.

Film lovers can thank Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” for the holidays’ most popular narrative connection — but slasher Santas and Yuletide ghosts existed way before Jack Skellington hit Christmas Town. The connection makes sense. The Western world’s two biggest holidays are contrasting yet complementary: theatrical celebrations of excess and society-wide make-believe that tickle our imaginations, feed our appetites, and provide pseudo-intellectuals with the perfect excuse to misunderstand Pagan tradition.

Russian companies barred from displaying tech products at CES 2023
Image
Las Vegas, Jan 5 (Ians) At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 being held here from January 5-8, Russian companies are not allowed to display their technology products because the country’s invasion of Ukraine, media reports said.

Gary Shapiro, head of Consumer Technology Association, which runs the event, said that Russia is “not welcome”, BBC reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, causing outrage in several countries around the world, and since then, the US, Canada, the EU, and many other countries have imposed sanctions on Russia.

“We did not welcome them this year given the political situation. We just didn’t feel it was appropriate,” Shapiro was quoted as saying, BBC reported.

“It wasn’t a matter of legal policy for the US, it’s a matter of our policy as an organisation,” he added.

Shapiro added that a few Russian companies asked to exhibit their products, according to the report.

CES Shortened By One Day Amid Covid Case Records Across The U.S.
Image
Updated: The Consumer Technology Association announced late today that its CES trade show next week in Las Vegas will end one day early. The move comes amid record-setting Covid counts in many states across America.

“The step was taken as an additional safety measure to the current health protocols that have been put in place for CES,” read a statement from Cts. Attendees at the show must show proof of vaccination and a negative antigen test taken in the past 24 hours.

“As the world’s most influential technology event, CES is steadfast in its pledge to be the gathering place to showcase products and discuss ideas that will ultimately make our lives better,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Cta. “We are shortening the show to three days and have put in place comprehensive health measures for the safety of all attendees and participants.”

DGA Expresses Dismay Over New U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Deal’s Inclusion Of Copyright “Safe Harbor”
As the House was poised to vote on Thursday on a revised U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal, the Directors Guild of America expressed dismay that the pact includes a so-called “safe harbor” that shields internet companies from liability for third-party content on their sites.

The provision in the trade pact, an update of the North American Free Trade Agreement known as Uscma, mirrors Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. That portion of the 1998 law gives internet sites immunity from lawsuits for third-party infringement, as long as they quickly take down pirated content upon notice from the copyright owner.

The DGA issued a statement on Thursday saying that it was “deeply disappointed” that the trade deal includes the “safe harbor” language.

The guild said that the provision “does nothing but provide a free pass from monetary liability to the world’s largest tech companies at the expense of our members...

Cta Names Ibm’s Ginni Rometty CES 2019 Kickoff Speaker, After Backlash Over Lack of Women Keynoters
The Consumer Technology Association’s CES 2019 next January — for the first time in three years — will feature a female keynote speaker.

The Cta announced Wednesday that Ginni Rometty, Ibm’s chairman, president and CEO, will kick off the annual consumer-tech conference in Las Vegas in an address on Jan. 8, 2019. Rometty previously delivered a keynote at CES 2016, the last time the trade show featured female keynoters.

Rometty’s selection comes after a backlash against the Cta’s all-male keynote lineup for CES 2018, coming after no women were featured the previous year, either. Among the responses, Twitter organized an event with all women speakers at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Jan. 10, 2018, promoted under the hashtag #HereWeAre, which was the brainchild of chief marketing officer Leslie Berland.

In her CES keynote, Rometty is expected to talk about how technology will improve how businesses operate and people work and live. Specifically, she’ll...

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Cancels Next Week’s CES Appearance After Net Neutrality Rollback
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai won’t be taking a victory lap over pulling back net neutrality rules at the Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas, after all. Pai will not be attending the conference, according to a statement from Consumer Technology Association head Gary Shapiro on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai is unable to attend CES 2018,” said Shapiro. “We look forward to our next opportunity to host a technology policy discussion with him before a public audience.” Shapiro didn’t say why his appearance had been cancelled. Cta did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
