Derrick M. Brown was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up in Greeneville, Tennessee. He moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he decided to pursue his passion for filmmaking. He enrolled in a school for film production, where he discovered a deep interest in cinematography and lighting.

While still in college, Derrick began working on commercials and corporate videos, quickly gaining practical, hands-on experience. Soon after, he secured his first feature film roles in the grip and lighting departments, where he developed a unique versatility in both areas. This dual expertise in grip and electrical work has become a defining aspect of his career, showcasing his technical skill and adaptability on set.

Derrick's passion for filmmaking has taken him around the world, including a significant period living and working in Beijing. There, he contributed to numerous projects as both a filmmaker and editor, expanding his skill set and artistic range. His work in Beijing helped solidify his reputation as a talented and reliable professional in the industry.
