Update: A federal judge heard arguments and testimony today in the Associated Press’ effort to regain access to the Oval Office and other White House events, after the Trump administration banned the wire service because it refused to change its style guidance from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf America.
U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden issued no ruling but indicated that he would issue one in a “timely fashion.”
The AP, led by attorney Charles Tobin, is seeking a preliminary injunction to restore its access, arguing that its exclusion was the type of retaliatory “viewpoint discrimination” prohibited by the First Amendment. The AP’s lead White House correspondent, Zeke Miller, said that he was informed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Feb. 11 that it would be denied access unless it changed its policy on the use of the term Gulf of America.
