Patrick Swayze's Biggest '80s Hit Got A Forgotten, Short-Lived TV Spin-Off
Image
Sometimes, when a party is winding down, all you want to do is jack the music back up loud and revisit the fun from a couple of hours ago when everything seemed to be going well. Reviving pop culture moments can feel like that, as a studio or a network desperately grasps at a flashpoint moment in the hopes of eeking a few more dollars out of everyone's excitement. Back in the 1980s, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey had all of America on the dance floor with "Dirty Dancing," and not a year later, CBS was trying to get people back onto the floor with a TV series adapted from the popular film. "Dirty Dancing" would only run for 11 episodes back in the fall of 1988 and early 1989, before the franchise lay dormant for some years, waiting for someone to remember this random little spin-off.

If you've been following TV history for any length of time,...

The Best Patrick Swayze Movies: Five of Our Favorites
Image
Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.

Red Dawn (1984)

John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

“I love you and I’m sorry”: Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze Were Both Crying During Screen Test For Dirty Dancing For Different Reasons
Image
After initially starring alongside Patrick Swayze in the 1984 war drama Red Dawn, Jennifer Grey admitted to having no desire to work with Swayze ever again. Having the worst time of her life enduring his pranks and work ethic while sharing the screen for the John Milius’ movie, Grey recalled being hesitant to star alongside him in Dirty Dancing.

Appearing on The View in 2022, Jennifer Grey reflected on her negative experience working with Patrick Swayze in Red Dawn. Thereafter, justifying the reason behind her hesitation to work with Swayze again in Dirty Dancing, Grey recalled how the late actor had convinced her to change her mind after the screen test.

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey offers a hopeful update about the beloved film's long-awaited sequel. A follow-up to the hit 1987 romantic drama was announced in 2020, with Grey attached to the project as a star and executive producer. Dirty Dancing 2 was set for a 2024 release date, but production was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. There have been few updates regarding the anticipated film since then. During the BFI London Film Festival (via Variety) premiere for Grey's latest project, A Real Pain, the actress shared:

"I can't tell you much about Dirty Dancing as I'm not going to make promises. I'm just waiting for them to really nail it down as it has to be right. We can push that aside until we next time we speak when it hopefully will all be ironed out."

Dirty Dancing Sequel's Ongoing Delay Addressed By Jennifer Grey
Image
Actor Jennifer Grey addresses the ongoing delays of the much anticipated Dirty Dancing 2. The original movie, directed by Emile Ardolino in 1987, follows Baby Houseman (Jennifer Grey) as she falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) at a Catskill resort in the summer of 1963. It became a cultural phenomenon upon release, earning over $200 million at the box office against a modest $5 million budget. Lionsgate announced Dirty Dancing 2 in 2020 with Grey returning as both star and executive producer, but the project has been slow to take shape, with production repeatedly pushed back.

While speaking to Collider, Grey opened up about the continued delays surrounding Dirty Dancing 2, which will be directed by Jonathan Levine. Though she did not disclose specific reasons, she stressed that production would only move forward once creative elements are fully locked in. Grey said:

It’s been four years since a sequel to “Dirty Dancing” was announced, with Jennifer Grey set to reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman from the 1987 original. The follow-up film was originally slated for a 2024 release, but Lionsgate pushed back its theatrical release due to last year’s Hollywood strikes.

Recently, Grey shared an update on the long-delayed “Dirty Dancing” sequel at the BFI London Film Festival premiere of her latest film, “A Real Pain.”

“I can’t tell you much about ‘Dirty Dancing’ as I’m not going to make promises,” Grey told GamesRadar+ and other reporters at the “A Real Pain” premiere in London on Sunday. “I’m just waiting for them to really nail it down as it has to be right.”

Where To Watch Dirty Dancing Online - Is It Available To Stream For Free?
Image
Fans of the Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey romantic dance drama will be pleased to know that there are some options to watch Dirty Dancing online. Premiering in theaters on August 21, 1987, Dirty Dancing immediately captured the American consciousness with its heart, fantastic characters, and, of course, excellent choreography. A quintessential coming-of-age movie, Dirty Dancing earned a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, $214 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo), an Academy Award, four nominations at the Golden Globes with one win, and two Grammy nominations with one win.

The film was, and remains, a critical piece of popular culture, and it's not just because of Dirty Dancing's fantastic soundtrack. Swayze stars as Johnny Castle, a dance instructor at a vacation resort who catches the attention of Frances "Baby" Houseman. So begins a love story between two young people, kept apart by one's family. It's a classic and arguably made Swayze and Grey's careers afterward.

Dirty Dancing Ending Explained
Image
One of the most iconic romantic movies in cinematic history is Dirty Dancing, and the movie's ending is what makes the film such a classic. A coming-of-age story, Dirty Dancing follows Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) while she spends summer vacation at a resort in the Catskills with her father, mother, and sister. That summer, she meets a dance instructor named Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), and the two fall for one another despite their different economic backgrounds. Through Johnny and Baby's relationship, the movie explores themes of classism, first loves, sexuality, and courage.

While Dirty Dancing has many memorable sequences, the most popular scene is the finale. Johnny returns to the resort after being fired for having a relationship with Baby. In front of all the resort staff and guests, Baby and Johnny dance to the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

‘Live with Kelly and Mark’ Parodies AMC Theatres in ‘After the Oscars’ Episode Promo

“Live with Kelly and Mark” will celebrate the Oscars with the annual “After the Oscars” episode, airing Monday, March 11. In celebration of the highly anticipated show, hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are seen parodying the AMC Theatres feature starring Nicole Kidman, which appears before the start of every movie shown at the movie chain.

In the clip, Ripa can be seen dressed in similar attire to what is worn by Kidman, along with a near step-by-step replication of Kidman from the hair, the dialogue and the scenery. The only difference is that instead of the AMC logo, it is a “Live” interpretation, as shown throughout.

“We come to this place for magic. We come to Live theaters to laugh, to cry, to care because we need that, all of us. That indescribable feeling that we get when the lights begin to dim,” says Ripa at the start of the clip,...

One Of Dirty Dancing's Most Recognizable Scenes Was Improvised
Image
When film fans talk about great on-screen chemistry, one of the first pairings that comes to mind for me is Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the now-classic, "Dirty Dancing." As Johnny Castle and Frances "Baby" Houseman, the duo are practically radiating with charisma and it's impossible not to fall in love with them throughout the film. It's also a huge testament to their acting abilities, as the pair famously butted heads throughout the production of "Red Dawn," a film they appeared in together three years prior.

"Patrick was playing pranks on me and everybody," Grey said during an episode of "The View" in 2022. "[He was] late and the boss of everybody and it was just, like, macho and I just couldn't take it. I was just like, 'Please, this guy, that's enough with him.'" Grey was the first of the duo cast, and for a time it looked like Billy Zane,...

Dirty Dancing 2: Cast, Release Date & Everything We Know

The release date for Dirty Dancing 2 has been pushed back due to the recent strike by SAG-AFTRA, causing a delay in production and promotion of the movie. Jennifer Grey has been confirmed to return as Baby Houseman in Dirty Dancing 2, and efforts are being made to involve as many original cast members as possible. Dirty Dancing 2 Faces Another Big Setback With Release Delayed Over One Year
Image
The release date for Dirty Dancing 2 has been delayed by over a year due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, with its release now expected in summer 2025. The sequel will need to address the absence of Patrick Swayze's character, Johnny, likely by portraying his character as having passed away, allowing Baby to work through her grief. Dance will continue to be a central theme in Dirty Dancing 2, with Grey's character possibly using it to find closure and resolution following Johnny's death. However, audiences will have to wait longer to see where the story goes.

The Dirty Dancing 2 release date has been pushed back by more than a year as the film encounters a new setback. Released in 1987, the original Dirty Dancing stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, telling the story of Frances "Baby" Houseman, who falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle while vacationing at a resort with her family.

10 Greatest Summer Vacation Movies
Image
Although there have been plenty of iconic summer vacation movies over the years, only a couple can hold the "best of all time" mantle. Summer is well-known in the movie business for being a great time to drop big tentpole films and crowd-pleasing blockbusters. However, films that take place during the summer are also an iconic part of the season. Watching a film about the summer during summer vacation is the perfect way to really get into the mood. Whether a film takes place at a camp or a beautiful beach, there are plenty of perfect locales to escape into when watching a summer movie.

Summer vacation movies have been a staple of the film world for decades. In 1958, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward heated up movie screens with The Long, Hot Summer, their first on-screen collaboration. Nearly a decade later, in 1969, the surfing documentary The Endless Summer was a mainstream hit.

Disney's Long-Forgotten Direct-To-Video Little Mermaid Prequel Was Footloose Under The Sea
Image
Gather around, everybody, and let me tell you of a magical time. It was the turn of the century, which is really old-timey way of saying just about anytime between about 1990 and 2010, and not every movie Disney made was a gigantic and expensive exploitation of one of its most popular intellectual properties. This was a time when Disney exploited its most popular intellectual properties in smaller and more affordable ways, by making lots of straight-to-video sequels and prequels to hit films like "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Little Mermaid."

Some might argue that these straight-to-video cash-ins were, you know, cash-ins. They were milking fans of these beloved theatrical releases for everything they were worth, after all, with films that didn't match the original in terms of ambition or, often, craft. But ignore these oft-forgotten films at your peril, because sometimes they were not only good, but...

The Outsiders: Where You Recognize The Cast From
Image
The Outsiders brings the S.E. Hinton novel to life and features a cast full of future stars playing the book's many characters. Released in 1983 to high critical praise, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed cult classic tells the story of a gang of teens in the '60s who must deal with the consequences of their violent lifestyle. Unflinching in its approach to storytelling, The Outsiders weaves a lyrical and gripping narrative that puts it head and shoulders above the usual coming-of-age movies of the '80s, and it made legitimate stars out of most of its ensemble cast.

Essentially introducing the group known affectionately as the "Brat Pack" to the movie-going public, The Outsiders collected an eclectic mix of young actors who became some of the biggest box office draws of the '80s. While actors like Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise went on to be iconic leading men, supporting...

Why Patrick Swayze's Road House Stunts Were Good Explained By Stuntmen
Image
Stuntmen discuss what makes Patrick Swayze’s stunts in Road House so good. Jake Gyllenhaal is currently getting set to star in a remake of Road House, with UFC star Conor McGregor joining him to give the film some bone-crunching realism. Released in 1989, the original Road House didn’t need a professional fighter to bring a sense of realism to its scenes of barroom brawling, because it had trained martial artist Swayze in the lead role.

Swayze’s legitimate martial arts skills indeed are a big reason why Road House still holds up as a classic ‘80s action film, as discussed in a new video from Corridor Crew, where the gang break down what makes the movie’s stunts so incredible.

As stunt coordinator Eric Linden points out in the clip, “Swayze was a real martial artist. Definitely trained it a lot. Knew what he was doing.” He adds, “Swayze,...

'Dirty Dancing' star Jennifer Grey says sequel is on the way

Hollywood actress Jennifer Grey has signalled that the long-awaited ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel is “happening” – and will feature some familiar faces. Months after helping announce details about the movie during Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this year, the actress, 62, filled ‘Extra’ in on some new developments and said that filming for the project kicks off in the spring, reports People magazine.

The 14 Best Hockey Movies, Ranked
Image
In HBO Max's excellent miniseries "Beartown," a rural hockey coach explains why his team's enforcer punches his opponents so often. "He's not fighting. He's protecting the most important investment this town has ever seen." That investment is the team's star forward, and when a parent pushes this coach to elaborate further, he responds curtly, "Either you understand that aspect of hockey or you don't."

That brusqueness, both on the ice and off, could be why there are so few hockey films. It's a sport that you either understand or you don't, a wildly popular worldwide phenomenon that still mystifies and alienates many. A recent Gallup poll had football, baseball, basketball, and soccer ranked above hockey as Americans' favorite sports despite the NHL having more reach and organizations than the Mls and Nwsl combined. That means that the best hockey films aren't just good cinema, they're a gateway to understanding...

Patrick Swayze’s widow says the actor would not be part of Dirty Dancing reboot: ‘Patrick had a high standard’
Image
Patrick Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi Swayze, said her husband would not be tempted into reappearing in the planned Dirty Dancing reboot 35 years on from the original.

Lisa was married to Swayze from 1975 until his death at the age of 57 in 2009 from pancreatic cancer.

The Cannes Film Festival is back at full strength for the first time since 2019, and just in time to mark the iconic event’s 75th anniversary. While the 2021 edition of Cannes was a muted affair with the market going virtual — and the sale of Gerard Butler’s “Greenland” sequel to STX emerging as the hottest deal — this year’s market is back in person with a dynamic, broad array of packages on offer, including a healthy serving of action titles, sci-fi thrillers and historical dramas. Here are some of the top titles sparking interest from buyers.

The "Dirty Dancing" Sequel Director Knows You Have Doubts
Image
Baby is coming back. More than three decades after its original release, "Dirty Dancing" is getting a sequel. Lionsgate first teased the news during its CinemaCon presentation on April 28, which featured footage from the film and a narrator saying, "Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman's in the next chapter."

Filmmaker Jonathan Levine of "Warm Bodies" and "Long Shot" will direct the sequel, which he has cowritten with Elizabeth Chomko. In an interview with Deadline, Levine revealed that the film has not yet been cast, though this time, Baby's story will intermingle with another plot that centers around a young woman spending the summer at the Kellerman's resort. The team apparently is in the process of narrowing down candidates to play that role.

Levine disclosed that the movie will feature several tracks from the first film, including the song "Hungry Eyes." It reportedly will also include '90s hip-hop and may feature...

'Dirty Dancing' sequel is moving forward without Johnny Castle, the character originally played by the late Patrick Swayze.

In August, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer surprised fans of the film by reportedly confirming that a follow-up to the 1987 cult-classic was on the way, with Jennifer Grey reprising her role as Frances 'Baby' Houseman as well as serving as an executive producer, reports NME.

In an interview with People Grey, 60, has now revealed that the film will not recast Patrick Swayze’s character and instead will go in a different direction to its beloved predecessor.

Swayze, who played Baby’s love interest in the original film, sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009.

“All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed… you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that. You just go for something different,” she said.

She also explained why she...

33 years later, a ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel is in the works — and Baby will return!
Image
The last time we saw “Dirty Dancing” star Jennifer Grey kick up her heels, it was in 2010 as the winner of Season 11 of “Dancing with the Stars” alongside her pro partner Derek Hough. At 50 years old, she became the show’s oldest female champion.

The actress, now 60, who co-starred as Frances “Baby” Housman opposite the late Patrick Swayze in 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” is involved in a sequel as both the star and executive producer of a new version of the film. The original was set at a Catskills resort where naive Baby learned how dance and make romance with dancing instructor Johnny Castle. Now, Baby isn’t in the corner. She’s in the producer’s chair.

New ‘Dirty Dancing’ Movie? Jennifer Grey To Star In & Executive Produce Dance Pic At Lionsgate
Image
Exclusive: A new untitled dance movie is taking shape at Lionsgate, set in the 1990s and starring and executive produced by Dirty Dancing Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Grey. While details are being kept quiet, there’s some rumblings that a new Dirty Dancing movie could be in the works. Sources aren’t confirming, but they aren’t putting the idea in a corner either.

Lionsgate holds distribution rights to the Dirty Dancing films, and Grey, of course, played teenager Baby in that movie who falls for her Catskills resort dance instructor, Johnny Castle, played by the late Patrick Swayze. The first movie released in 1987 by Vestron racked up $218 million at the global box office off a $5M production cost, as well as an Oscar and Golden Globe win for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz. At the Globes,...

My favourite film aged 12: Dirty Dancing
Patrick Swayze
Patrick Swayze’s dance instructor Johnny swept me off my feet when I was an awkward teenager. Would I still have the time of my life rewatching this feelgood classic?

Read all the other My favourite film choicesThe best arts and entertainment during self-isolation

Growing up, there weren’t many films that I had watched so many times that I knew not just the lines but also the songs off by heart, but Dirty Dancing was one of them. I was way too young to see it at the cinema when it first came out in 1987, but caught it a few years later on TV, recording it on to a VHS tape so I could replay my favourite scenes. I was thrilled. I was a bookish kid who felt intensely shy and awkward. And there on my screen was a not-that-shy but definitely studious and awkward teenager being swept off her feet,...

Patrick Swayze movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘Dirty Dancing,’ ‘Ghost,’ ‘Road House’
Patrick Swayze
Although his films for the most part weren’t award winners or critical successes, Patrick Swayze starred in a stream of commercially successful movies that have since gone on to attain cult status. Two set the standard for the iconic 1980s Brat-Pack teen movies, and two films that have become a huge part of pop culture. Men wanted to be him, women loved him and he is one of the actors that comes to mind as one we lost much too soon.

Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, the second of five children. His mother owned a dance studio, and Swayze became an accomplished dancer, although he was bullied in school for his training in classical ballet. As a teen, he honed several skills besides dance, including ice skating, acting in school plays, martial arts and football. His hopes for a football scholarship were dashed when he injured his knee.

Chris Hemsworth Responds to The Rock's Thor Vs. Hobbs Crossover Idea
Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth has come up with a counter-offer to Dwayne Johnson's crossover idea. Last week, Johnson joked that he wanted to have Hemsworth's Thor character join him in the Fast and Furious franchise to meet the "real God of Thunder." Social media exploded over the idea, even though it was clearly a joke. And now, Hemsworth has gotten in on the fun and taking it one step further with a hilarious meme that features both actors in a crossover that nobody ever saw coming.

In Dwayne Johnson's original tweet about the Thor crossover with the Fast and Furious franchise, he used a hashtag that reads: "Thor hits the floor," leading many to believe that he was throwing some fun shade at Chris Hemsworth and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hemsworth then shot back with a photo of the two actors literally hitting the floor for a Dirty Dancing remake. Hemsworth...
