The original Borat was perfectly willing to blend scripted and unscripted material together to make an extremely funny, if difficult to watch film. It was slightly dishonest, but it made me laugh throughout. Borat often held repellent ideas about women, race, and any “hot button” topic one might care to mention. This was all designed to shock and amuse but at his core Borat was always a sweet little boy, who had the bad luck of being raised in a comically backward former Soviet Republic. It was this sweet naivety that held my attention, even if Borat was doing something awful. I felt no such twang of humanity from Baron Cohen’s other comic creation, Bruno who had no excuse for acting like such a jerk.

Ugh, will those eleven days never end? I’m talking about the big upcoming national elections. And they include the “big one”, the “main event”, namely the presidency. So is it too late for a film to change anybody’s mind? Well, we shall see, though this time, because of certain circumstances, it’s bypassing the slowly growing list of theatres to stream on one of the more popular platforms. Could people be “burnt out” by the avalanche of political news, debates. and those annoying negative campaign ads? That’s a real possibility, except that this is a sequel to one of the biggest comedies of the last fifteen years. Sacha Baron Cohen returns to provocateur greatness in a hilarious, but deeply troubling satire. He reprises his role as kooky Kazakhstani reporter, Borat Sagdiyev; in the aptly titled mockumentary, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. This time he's returned to America to curry favor with "strongman" leader, President Donald Trump. There are scenes in this film that are absolutely mind-boggling. Cohen pushes the envelope to expose ugly undercurrents of misogyny, racism, and ludicrous conspiracy theories. He delivers big laughs and a damning indictment of the country's sad state of affairs.
