With Control Freak now streaming on Hulu, we were recently able to catch up with director Shal Ngo (The Park; Bite Size Halloween) and stars Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon; Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) and Miles Robbins (Blockers; Halloween) to talk about their brand new body horror film that's guaranteed to send a chill down your spine.

Written and directed by Shal Ngo and starring Kelly Marie Tran (of Star Wars and Raya And the Last Dragon fame), Miles Robbins, Kieu Chinh, Callie Johnson and Toan Le, Control Freak is an intensely heady, emotionally charged and unnervingly relevant meditation on the destructive trail of mental illness. Based on Ngo's 2021 short film of the same name, featured in Hulu's Bite Size Halloween, the full-length feature goes all-in on its literal depiction of mental illness, inherited trauma and Buddhist folklore, but its longer length and unsteady pacing works against it.

I love all kinds of horror movies. I know that people scoff at shock horror or ones that are high on gore, but if done well, they can be fun too. That said, recently, I’ve been gravitating towards tales about the external manifestation of somebody’s innermost apprehensions or desires rather than stories about something external that’s supposed to induce fear internally. As in, I will appreciate a well-made creature feature where said creature goes on an absolute rampage. But there’ll always be a sense of detachment to it because, at the back of my mind, I always know no such thing can exist in real life. Now, if you have a haunting entity that can be perceived only by the protagonist, since it’s a representation of that individual’s unresolved trauma or guilt, then you have me scared even after the credits have rolled on the film.

The Newport Beach Film Festival has announced its 2022 award winners, including an Audience Award for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Festival Awards for “Devotion” and “The Lost King.”

In its 23rd year, the festival showcased over 350 films from around the world, as well as hosted red carpet premieres, nightly special events, live music performances and conversations with filmmakers. Exclusive: The Park, a dystopian drama series that explores a society left to be governed by children as a mysterious virus starts killing off all adults, has wrapped production for Topic and Vanishing Angle.

The limited series, which is written and directed by Shal Ngo, who directed an episode of Hulu’s short film series Bite Size Halloween, and produced by Natalie Metzger (The Beta Test), is set to make the festival rounds with Topic and Vanishing Angle looking for broadcasters and streamers in the U.S. and internationally.

The Park stars Secrets of Sulphur Springs pair Chloe Guidry and Nhedrick Jabiar and Carmina Garay (PEN15).

It is a dystopian coming-of-age series focused on three kids who find themselves in an abandoned amusement park, aiming to unite whoever remains. With dangers lurking around every corner, they will do whatever it takes to survive their hellish Neverland.
