Nick and Judy in Therapy? New ‘Zootopia 2’ Trailer Teases Trouble, Snakes, and Surprises
Image
The new trailer for Zootopia 2 just dropped, and it looks like Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde aren’t exactly living the dream. The bunny and fox are back, but not everything is sunshine and teamwork. In fact, they’re in couples therapy. Well, kind of.

As shown in the teaser released by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Judy and Nick have been working as official police partners for just a week. But already, their clashing personalities are causing problems, so much so that Chief Bogo, voiced again by Idris Elba, sends them to therapy. The sessions are led by a therapist named Dr. Fuzzby, played by Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson.

Judy, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, seems frustrated but hopeful in the trailer, while Nick (Jason Bateman) stays his usual sarcastic self. The therapy isn’t optional, either. Chief Bogo makes it clear they need to fix their issues fast,...

The latest trailer shows the two police partners meeting with a therapist, played by Quinta Brunson. It’s not exactly romantic therapy, though. As Judy points out, they’ve only been official police partners for a week. Still, things are rocky enough that Chief Bogo (voiced again by Idris Elba) has forced them into partner counseling. If they don’t fix their issues, he’s ready to break up the team.

Judy and Nick are facing a new mystery involving a snake named Gary De’Snake. He’s voiced...

Zootopia 2 just released the oddest (and catchiest) Disney trailer yet
Image
The rabbit-fox duo Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are back! The first trailer for Zootopia 2 just arrived (exactly at 9 am Pt/12 pm Et), featuring their co-lead for the sequel, Gary De’Snake (voiced by Ke Hey Quan), and it looks like a fun time is in the works.

The teaser is a unique one, the most unusual out of any marketing material from Disney's main animated studio, even when compared to the first movie’s teaser, which featured Nick narrating. This new teaser turns up the jam, and it works to a tremendous benefit.

For one, there is no dialogue for the entire sequence, only an Edm track entitled “Zutu”, performed by the Zootopia lemming techno group Lemeens, who start and bookend the trailer. With the first movie featuring a certified banger from Shakira, "Zutu" follows that up with a way catchier beat.

Another is featuring several unseen areas of Zootopia,...

Moana 2, Wicked, And Gladiator II Gift Theaters The Biggest Thanksgiving Weekend In Box Office History
Image
Following the biggest Black Friday ever at the North American box office with an estimated $108 million ($54.5 million was contributed by Disney Animation's Moana 2), business looks incredibly strong over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Five-day estimates for the Moana sequel have raised to $215 million - $220 million; its three-day haul is expected to be around $140 million, the second-best debut of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's career after Fast & Furious 7's $147.1 million opening.

Moana 2 has also set a new five-day Thanksgiving record, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $204.6 million.

The other two big movies contributing to this record-breaking haul are Wicked and Gladiator II. The former is eyeing $118 million over five days, ensuring it's broken a few records of its own.

After the movie's success, the expectation is that we'll see a greater number of musicals brought to the big screen...and that studios might finally start marketing them as such.

After the movie's success, the expectation is that we'll see a greater number of musicals brought to the big screen...and that studios might finally start marketing them as such.

Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Serves Up Record $28M Thanksgiving Feast, Heads for $175M-Plus Launch
Auli'i Cravalho in Moana 2 (2024)
Moanapocalypse has arrived at the Thanksgiving box office, where a record bounty is underway for Hollywood and theater owners.

Disney’s fantasy musical Moana 2 opened to a record-shattering $57.5 million on Wednesday, followed by $28 million on Thursday — the biggest Thanksgiving of all time and the fourth-biggest Thursday for a non-opening day. Rival studios show the animated sequel opening north of $200 million — as in $225 million or more — but Disney won’t comment until Friday so as to avoid what happened last weekend when Wicked and Gladiator II came in millions lower than estimated.

Globally, the film has already earned $109.6 million and the weekend hasn’t even begun, including $85.5 million domestically.

Thanks to the potent combination of Disney’s Moana sequel, Universal’s Wicked and Paramount’s Gladiator II, overall five-day revenue will hit a high for the long Turkey Day holiday, or well north of $400 million (the previous best was 2018 with...

Moana 2 Breaks Box Office Records On Tuesday As Theaters Brace Themselves For Huge Thanksgiving Weekend
Image
Reviews for Moana 2 haven't been anywhere near as positive as 2016's Moana but that won't stop people flocking to theaters this Thanksgiving weekend.

The sequel opened with $13.8 million in preview screenings on Tuesday, breaking an impressive box office record. Not only is this by far the biggest preview number ever for a Walt Disney Animation title, but it's also the second biggest haul for any animated feature behind only Pixar's Incredibles 2 (which earned $18.5 million in 2018).

For comparison, Inside Out 2 scored $13 million in Thursday previews earlier this year before scoring a $154 million opening weekend. Toy Story 4 made $12 million in 2019 ahead of a $121 million three-day debut, while Frozen II earned $8.5 million the same year before going on to make $130 million the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Based on current estimates, Moana 2 could rise as high as $135 million - $145 million over its first five days in theaters. That would...

Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Shatters Records With $13.8M in Previews, Biggest Ever for Walt Disney Animation
Image
Moanapocalypse has arrived.

Moana 2 amassed a record-shattering $13.8 million in Tuesday previews, the biggest preview number ever for a Walt Disney Animation title and the second-biggest for any animated film behind sister Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($18.5 million). That’s quite a feat, considering that the Incredibles sequel opened in the summer. On Tuesday, only 48 percent of schools were out and 20 percent of colleges, per Disney.

There’s more. Moana 2 snagged the top Tuesday pre-Thanksgiving preview gross of all time.

The sequel is widely expected to rank as the biggest Thanksgiving opening of all time with a five-day debut of $125 million to $135 million (Wednesday through Sunday). And it should be the biggest five-day earner of all time. The opening record is currently held by fellow Disney Animation title Frozen ($93.6 million). Frozen II, which opened the weekend before the holiday, versus midweek, currently holds the five-day record with $125 million in ticket sales.

Moana 2 could set sail along a tidal wave debut with $135M during its 5-day Thanksgiving holiday launch
Image
After breaking the box office with the release of Pixar‘s Inside Out 2, Disney is ready to come for our wallets again with the highly-anticipated sequel Moana 2. The animated adventure starring Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Alan Tudyk sails into theaters this weekend, taking advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday in the States. The 5-day Thanksgiving box office window sets Moana 2 up for an impressive windfall despite its competition, and analysts think Moana 2 could earn $135 million to $145 million during the Turkey Day frame.

If Moana 2 hits these numbers, it could overtake 2019’s Frozen II ($125M) and Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($109M) over the 5-day break. The most outstanding aspect of this prediction is that it’s only for the film’s domestic take. Moana 2 is opening overseas, too, possibly adding $100 million to its total, bringing its global earnings to $235 million. Moana 2 comes along during...

Moana 2 Reviews Promise Disney Fans An "Okay" Sequel As Movie's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Revealed
Image
The review embargo for Disney Animation's Moana 2 has just lifted and the first wave of verdicts are good but definitely not great. The sequel started life as a Disney+ TV series before Disney CEO Bob Iger decided it should become a money-making feature and it appears this follow-up to the 2016 classic is somewhat lacking.

We'll start with the trades; in Variety's review, it's said that Moana 2 "is an okay movie, an above-average kiddie roller-coaster, and a piece of pure product in a way that the first 'Moana,' at its best, transcended." The Hollywood Reporter explains, "Moana 2 builds impressive action sequences on a relatively weak story...[it's] a musical where Lin-Manuel Miranda’s absence is unfortunately felt."

The songs not being as good as the first movie is a recurring theme throughout nearly every review, though there are said to be some catchy numbers.

The Wrap may...

First ‘Moana 2’ Reactions Are Here and It Seems Disney Did a Fine Job: “It’s a delightful sequel”
Image
The world premiere of Disney’s “Moana 2” sailed into Oahu, Hawaii on Thursday.

Just before the release of “Moana 2,” Disney hosted a world premiere at the Lanikūhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii. The event featured the movie’s cast and creators, along with special guests like WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, Disney CEO Bob Iger, and even Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

The event opened with a performance led by Tiana Nonosina Liufau, Kayla Faʻamaligi, and other Polynesian artists to celebrate the Pacific people, cultures, and traditions that inspired Moana’s story. Following the premiere, the first reactions to the movie are live on social media:

Today’s special screening!

An amazing showcase of animated set pieces, i was in awe of the visuals the whole time! The songs are catchy & there’s a beautiful heart at the centre of the story. I enjoyed it!#Moana2 is in cinemas 28 November!

Moana 2 Social Media Reactions Promise A (Mostly) Worthy Sequel...Even If The Songs Aren't As Good
Image
Yesterday, Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson joined stars, filmmakers and special guests at the Lanikūhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii for Moana 2's world premiere.

The event kicked off with a special performance led by Tiana Nonosina Liufau, Kayla Faʻamaligi, and Polynesian creatives honouring the Pacific peoples, cultures, and traditions that gave voice to the heart of the Moana story. A few critics were also in attendance, meaning we now have some early reactions.

Of course, the fact that at least some of the reporters listed below were flown out to Hawaii by Disney for this splashy event means that, as with most social reactions, you should probably take them with a pinch of salt.

It's also worth pointing out that Disney appears less confident in the sequel because the review embargo doesn't lift until the day before Moana 2 arrives in theaters. That's extremely late for one of the studio's high-profile movies.

Joan Chen on the State of Aapi Storytelling in Hollywood: ‘The Progress We Have Made Is Worth Celebrating’
Image
Joan Chen is finally getting her flowers.

At the Critics Choice Association Celebration of Aapi Cinema and Television, Chen received a standing ovation as she accepted the career achievement award.

Chen, who was recognized for her work on “Twin Peaks,” and “The Last Emperor,” stars in Sean Wang’s “Didi.” She had received glowing reviews for her performance as Chunsing Wang in the coming-of-age story. The actress told the audience, “This film has brought me more recognition than I ever received for ‘The Last Emperor,'” she said referring to the 1987 film which made her a Hollywood star.

During her speech, Chen stressed the importance of diverse storytelling and how she has begun to see “more Asian faces on screen.” She added, “It took Hollywood quite a long time to come to the realization that diversity is our great unique strength and beauty. The progress that we have made is worth celebrating.

Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Maui, Moana, and Auli'i Cravalho in Moana 2 (2024)
“Moana 2” Thanksgiving Box Office Might Break Records
Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Maui, Moana, and Auli'i Cravalho in Moana 2 (2024)
“Moana 2” is finally releasing later this month, and it looks like it could break some Thanksgiving holiday records!

Currently, the film seems to be set to have the biggest five-day Thanksgiving holiday box office ever.

Estimates for the Wednesday-Sunday holiday block put the film at over $135 million. This would beat the holiday total for “Frozen 2″back in 2019.

Ticket pre-sales already seem to indicate that “Moana 2” is outperforming the pre-sale tickets for both “Inside Out 2” and “The Incredibles.”

“Moana 2” was originally set to be a Disney+ show, but Disney made the right decision to turn the show into a film for 2024.

2023 was a disastrous box office period for the Walt Disney Company. Most of their films bombed, and only a couple broke even or made some money.

Thankfully, 2024 has been significantly better for them with hits like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Ending the year...

‘Moana 2’ Tracking for Record-Shattering $125M-$135M Thanksgiving Opening
Image
Walt Disney Animation’s Moana 2 is sailing toward a record-shattering $125 million-$135 million opening over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday corridor, according to tracking data shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

The sequel opens Nov. 27, a Wednesday. The long holiday weekend is one of the most lucrative times of the year in terms of moviegoing, and this year’s feast is shaping up to be a bonanza, between Moana 2, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s musical spectacle Wicked. The latter two tentpoles unfurl Nov. 22 in order to get a jump on the holiday, and are likewise tracking to strong numbers, potentially meaning that holiday revenue could hit an all-time high, led by Moana 2. That’s welcome news for struggling theater owners; this week AMC Theatres chief Adam Aron said Moana 2 could be bigger than Pixar/Disney’s Inside Out 2.

If tracking data from Nrg and MarketCast is right,...

Walt Disney Animation Studios and the Disney Music Group today announced that the Moana 2 soundtrack will be available on November 22, 2024. “Beyond,” the end credit track from the anticipated film, is available today.

Written by Grammy Award-winning songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (Barlow & Bear), “Beyond” perfectly encapsulates Moana’s fearless sense of adventure and connecting her island beyond its shores. “Beyond” is now available on all streaming platforms, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Spotify.

The Moana 2 soundtrack on vinyl is also available for pre-order at Amazon, Disney Music Emporium, Target, and Walmart. The CD is available for pre-order at Amazon, Disney Music Emporium, and Target.

In addition to Barlow & Bear, Moana 2 marks the return of Billboard Music Award- and American Music Award-winning composer Opetaia Foa’i and Grammy®-winning composer Mark Mancina, who composed music for the original Moana.

‘Moana 2’ Scores Record First-Day Advance Ticket Sales
Image
Strong winds are benefiting Moana 2 as it sails into shore.

The Walt Disney Animation Studios tentpole set records Monday in terms of first-day advance ticket sales, according to online retailer Fandango.

It sold more tickets than any other 2024 animated film, including fellow Disney/Pixar summer 2024 blockbuster Inside Out 2. It’s also the fourth-best showing of the year among any movie behind Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked and Dune: Part 2. (It’s no wonder why box office observers have bequeathed the sequel with its own special moniker: “Moanapocalpyse.”)

The event pic hits theaters on Nov. 27, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and five days after Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s Wicked open nationwide in North America. Theater owners are counting on the trio of highly anticipated tentpoles to shore up ticket sales after a tough start to the third quarter.

David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller directed the animated feature,...

The projected total for the animated sequel’s Wednesday through Sunday holiday premiere arrives courtesy of Quorum. In contrast, 2016’s Moana set sail with an $82M premiere over five days. Moana 2 Trailer Reveals The Sequel's Villain And Teases Another Epic Adventure
Image
Chee hoo! Moana, Maui, Heihei, Pua the pig, and the dart-wielding Kakamora have returned for Disney Animation's Moana 2. Thanks to Toonado.com, we have a new trailer and poster for the animated musical which started life as a Disney+ TV series.

Despite its small screen origins - Disney CEO Bob Iger decided the show would work better as a feature - the visuals are gorgeous and this looks like a suitably epic adventure for the title character. While box office revenue was another factor in its evolution, this does look like a worthy follow-up to the 2016 hit.

The sequel reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
