2 Critically Acclaimed British Drama Series Are Coming to Streaming Soon
Image
Lend us your ears, fans of BritBox, the best of British streamer is gearing up for a special 'crime-spree' selection of programming scheduled for the end of summer. Headlining the special selection is the work of the award-winning Sally Wainwright, the genius British writer, producer, and director who stands as one of the finest minds in television to hail from across the pond.

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the summer 'crime-spree' is Wainwright's crime drama, Happy Valley, which flew to enormous international success upon its arrival back in 2014. Across nine years, three seasons, and eighteen episodes, Wainwright's ability to tell relatable, gritty stories with pulse-pounding twists and turns set the show apart from a diluted market of crime dramas, helped in no small part by the incredible lead performance of the great Sarah Lancashire. Happy Valley will arrive on BritBox on August 26, with Season 2 debuting on August 27, and the...

Roush Review: ‘Silence’ Is Golden in a Suspenseful British Thriller
Image
Silence speaks volumes in Code of Silence, a suspenseful British crime drama with an unusually endearing heroine: Alison Brooks (deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis), a working-class gal plucked from the precinct’s cafeteria to help detectives by lip-reading during their surveillance of a sinister robbery gang. Watching her visualize the words from afar or on a monitor is a fascinating process, and Alison takes to the task with almost too much fervor, ignoring the advice of her cautious handler, DS Ashleigh Francis (You‘s Charlotte Ritchie), who lectures her, “What is exciting isn’t always what’s best for you.” Alison is used to being underestimated and ignored, declaring to her mother (Fifi Garfield), who’s also deaf, “I’m really fed up of trying to prove myself.” They’re facing eviction by wealthy developers, and frustrated after being canned from a waitress gig, the headstrong Alison defies her new bosses...

The Assessment (2024) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: Did Mia Uncover the Truth—Or Just Virginia’s Own Despair?
Image
Fluer Fortuné’s The Assessment (2024) serves as a compelling companion piece to Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men, with both films set in a near-future world where childbirth has become a rarity. Yet, amid this crisis, their characters cling to the fragile hope of new life. While Cuarón’s vision is rooted in a gritty, war-torn landscape populated by working-class struggles, Fortuné’s film shifts the lens to a more insular perspective—that of a privileged couple living in a secluded, state-sanctioned sanctuary.

Despite the serene setting, The Assessment delivers a sharp critique of societal control, personal autonomy, and the quiet tyranny of privilege. It unfolds as a thoughtful meditation on what it truly means to become a parent in a world governed by surveillance and sterile order. The film isn’t afraid to venture into philosophical territory, raising questions that linger long after the credits roll.

Ultimately, the story...

How Anna Camp played twins with a twist on ‘You’
Image
Anna Camp has been stealing scenes since the days of Cashmere Mafia and The Office, but her greatest work to date undoubtedly has to be her arc in the final season of You on Netflix. Camp didn't just take on the twin roles of Reagan and Maddie Lockwood, but in a twist, she also portrayed Maddie impersonating Reagan — and at one point, she played all three in the same scene.

In the fifth episode of the final season of the serial-killer drama, Camp entered a bathroom to hide from her sister Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), who had questions about the twins. At this point, Maddie was already deep into taking over Reagan's life after being forced to kill her by Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), but she pretended that both sisters are in the bathroom, even starting a fight between them before she truly unraveled.

"When we first shot it, we shot it as a play,...

‘Code of Silence’ Writer Catherine Moulton Knows: “Lip Readers Are Detectives”
Image
When you watch the crime drama Code of Silence, which premiered on ITV and streamer Itvx in the U.K. on May 18 and will hit streaming service BritBox in the U.S. and Canada in July, you quickly realize that lip reading is even harder, and much less of a science, than you may have believed. One big reason for this reality check embedded throughout the detective thriller series is the experience of partially deaf creator and writer Catherine Moulton (Baptiste, Hijack) and the show’s deaf star Rose Ayling-Ellis who portrays the protagonist Alison, a deaf police canteen worker who gets tasked with a role in a sting operation due to her lip-reading skills.

“People are always looking for new ways into crime shows,” Moulton tells THR. “And it just sort of made sense to me that lip readers are detectives. So to have a crime show with a...

Code of Silence Season 1 Review: Breaking Sound Barriers
Image
From its very first frame, Code of Silence seizes attention by reframing the well-trodden police thriller through a seldom-seen perspective. What begins as a routine surveillance operation quickly turns into a compelling study of perception, communication, and power—an engagement with crime drama that feels both fresh and urgent.

Code of Silence is a six-part series premiering on Itvx/ITV1, each episode running approximately fifty minutes. At its heart is Alison Brooks (Rose Ayling-Ellis), a cafeteria worker at a Canterbury police station whose extraordinary lip-reading skills land her a spot on a high-stakes undercover investigation. When detectives discover her talent, Alison shifts from serving tea to decoding the clipped, conspiratorial exchanges of a violent gang.

The action alternates between the cluttered operations room, the quiet intensity of hidden-camera footage, and the pub where Alison takes a side-job to shadow the gang’s newest recruit. These locales—the austere police station,...

Penn Badgley Podcrushed Interview: Watch Video of Joe Goldberg and You Season 5 Survivors
Image
Sometimes, when Youprotagonist Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is in charge of your education, you end up framed for murder, like the unfairly imprisoned Darcy College student Nadia Fareedi (Amy-Leigh Hickman). But, for Badgley, Joe has proven to be an invaluable teacher — in exactly how not to move through the world.

“Joe has helped me understand what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father at a deeper level,” he tells Tudum. “I’ve had to understand, not only just the obviously atrocious ways that he represents men, or husbands, or fathers. But also the small sins that we’re all guilty of.”

Badgley gathered with co-stars Charlotte Ritchie (who plays Kate Lockwood), Madeline Brewer (Bronte), Tati Gabrielle (Marienne Bellamy), Hickman, and Anna Camp (Reagan and Maddie Lockwood) on his podcast Podcrushedto discuss all of Joe’s transgressions. The group, joined by Badgley’s co-hosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari,...

How Crime Series ‘Code of Silence,’ Starring Rose Ayling-Ellis, Put Inclusion Front and Center
Image
Crime drama Code of Silence, premiering on ITV and streamer Itvx in the U.K. on May 18 and on streaming service BritBox in the U.S. and Canada in July, breaks new ground in several ways. Not only does it star rising British actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, who has been tearing down walls left and right for years, in her first-ever lead role.

And not only does her role as Alison, a smart and determined deaf woman who works in a police canteen and gets recruited to use her lip-reading skills in a covert operation, redefine how deaf characters can be featured on screen.

But most important, Code of Silence is an example of a crime show targeting a broad audience that also provides representation for the deaf, disabled and neurodiverse communities, both in front of and behind the camera. As such, it is already being touted as a potential role...

J.K. Rowling Won't Fire 'Harry Potter's Paapa Essiedu for Pro-Trans Views
Image
J.K. Rowling has asserted that she doesn't have the power, nor would she ever fire an actor from HBO's Harry Potterseries because of their pro-trans views. She shared her stance on X/Twitter in response to an article speculating about whether she would "sack" Paapa Essiedu, who has been cast as Severus Snape, after he recently signed an open letter calling for industry action on trans rights in the wake of the U.K. Supreme Court ruling that transgender women should not to be recognized as women — a decision that was celebrated by Rowling but decried by many others, including The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal.

"I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did," Rowling wrote in a post she shared on X/Twitter (seen below). "I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because...

You Season 5 Followed a ‘Gossip Girl’ Formula With Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg That Made Him More Hateable Than Ever
Image
In the fifth and final season of You, the show took a daring narrative turn; instead of portraying Joe Goldberg as a conflicted romantic who sometimes does bad things, thus maintaining a sense of moral ambiguity, they went the other direction. Joe can be seen becoming more unhinged than ever in the final season of the show, no remorse, no excuses, just a blinding thirst for blood.

This evolution, while not to the T, reminds us of the trajectory Gossip Girl’s Dan Humphrey followed, who just so happens to be another Penn Badgley character btw. Both characters were initially portrayed as ostensibly relatable outsiders but gradually went on to reveal darker, more manipulative facets, contradicting the audience’s initial sympathies.

Joe Goldberg: Just a hopeless romantic or an unhinged antihero?

Joe’s (Penn Badgley) descent into blatant darkness can be observed through his increased detachment from his initial moral ambiguity and reality.

That Scene in ‘You’ Season 5 Where Anna Camp Goes Full ‘Parent Trap’ But Make It Trauma Was Iconic
Image
You didn’t have to do us like that! But hey, we’re so glad it did. When Anna Camp showed up in You Season 5, we were expecting a sprinkle of uptight flair or a dash of Type-a chaos. What we didn’t expect? A full-blown masterclass in duality and acting. Camp didn’t just play One character—she played two. Meet Reagan: the razor-sharp, ruthless twin who could make a shark flinch.

And Maddie: her wide-eyed, anxious sister with secrets so deep they practically whisper through the screen. Camp made switching between the two seem like it was child’s play. Serving girlboss grit and broken vulnerability without missing a beat. But there’s one scene—yes, That scene—that sealed her crown.

Anna, you genius. We’ll never look at chill the same way again.

How Anna Camp nailed the twin switch without missing a beat A...

Watch Penn Badgley (and the Cast of ‘You’) Cover Taylor Swift and Bon Iver’s ‘Exile’
Image
A bloodied Joe Goldberg singing Taylor Swift? Heck, why not? On Wednesday, Penn Badgley shared a video of himself (with his chin covered in fake blood) singing to Swift’s song with Bon Iver, “Exile,” alongside his You castmates, Anna Camp and Charlotte Ritchie, and his podcast partners.

Badgley and the crew tried their best to emulate the harmonies of Swift and Justin Vernon, as they sang the back-and-forth bridge, “All this time/I never learned to read your mind (never learned to read my mind)/I couldn’t turn...

‘You’ Star Charlotte Ritchie Is Making Boss Moves Only
Image
[This story contains spoilers from You season five, including the series finale, “Finale.”]

Charlotte Ritchie not only got to unlock a new version of herself in the fifth and final season of You but also a new version of her character Kate Lockwood.

The 35-year-old English actress, also known for her roles on Fresh Meat, Call the Midwife and Ghosts, learns something new from each project she takes on after inadvertently manifesting her career when she was younger. “In the past, I’ve been very coy. I never wanted to say I wanted to be an actress,” she explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “But then I found a diary from when I was about 10 that literally says all over the front cover, ‘I want to be an actress.’ So I obviously did, and I’ve just decided to curate this version of myself that’s so much more humble.”

As for Ritchie’s character Kate, one of Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) love...

You Season 5 Cast: Guide to Joe, Kate, Bronte, Lockwoods, Returning Characters, and More
Image
In You Season 5, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is welcomed back to New York City with open arms. But the book lover — and fatally romantic obsessive — isn’t returning to the same Manhattan he knew in You Season 1. Joe is no longer the working-class shop employee with a small apartment and an even smaller crawl space hiding criminal evidence. Instead, thanks to his marriage to billionaire CEO Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), he is seen as a devoted husband, an upstanding father, and New York City’s beloved Prince Charming.

With Joe’s new upper-crust status comes a cadre of wealthy socialites, cutthroat business people, and beguiling downtown creatives who make up the You Season 5 cast. One half of Joe’s life is dominated by Kate’s family business, the Lockwood Corporation, and the power-hungry relatives — like identical twins Reagan and Maddie Lockwood (both played by Anna Camp) — who lead...

One Of The Best TV Shows About Ghosts Doesn't Involve Any Horror
Image
Although "Abbott Elementary" is probably getting the most attention and acclaim among live-action sitcoms in 2025, CBS's "Ghosts" still deserves its due. It's a comedy series about a married couple who come into possession of a manor in upstate New York and try to turn it into a successful bed and breakfast.

There's just one complication: the house is filled with ghosts, and the wife, Sam (Rose McIver), can see them. The husband, Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), can't see the ghosts, but thankfully, he is the world's most patient man. Not only does he believe his wife quickly, but he also makes a valiant effort to be nice to the invisible specters as they constantly interfere with his and Sam's lives.

What makes "Ghosts" work is the way its premise allows it to toss together characters who would never normally find themselves in the same room. For example, the ghosts in...

Who Is Kate in You? Explaining Joe’s Second Wife
Image
Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a touch defensive as he ushers us into You Season 4. After leaving a trail of devastation across America, he swears he’s going to lay low and avoid romance in his new home of London. Joe’s new mantra is “No love. No people. Just books.” Then he looks out his window and his resolve to be an introvert is gone. All that remains is his crush on Kate Galvin, portrayed by Feel Good dream girl Charlotte Ritchie.

In Part 1, their complicated attraction blossoms. On the one hand, Joe’s hunt for the Eat the Rich Killer is keeping them apart. But, Kate’s own standoffishness and suspicion is its own romantic obstacle. “I had a feeling that there was something deeper in her,” Ritchie tells Tudum. “There’s something in her hatefulness that is so self-hating. It feels very much like it’s a...

'I Think We Deliver': Penn Badgley on What Makes You's Series Finale the Perfect Ending for Joe's Story
Image
This story contains Spoilers for You Season 5.

Penn Badgley, star of the Netflix series You, has stated that fans will find the fifth and final season of the show “so rewarding.” The last season has Joe return to New York, where his story began with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and where he will end his story.

Whilst critics haven’t been kind, rating Season 5 as the lowest on Rotten Tomatoes, Badgley seems happy with the final product. The Gossip Girl actor stated his satisfaction with the final product clearly: “I think we deliver; it’s a true deconstruction of Joe.” This news comes to us from Deadline.

Joe Goldberg’s last chapter sees many acts; the end of his marriage to Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), falling in love with Bronte (Madeline Brewer), being exposed as a killer to the general public, being confronted by several of his past victims, before...

‘You’ Star Tati Gabrielle Talks Giving Closure to Marienne With Season 5 Return: ‘She Is Still Strong’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “You” Season 5, Episodes 9-10.

With “You” closing out its final season by finally seeing Joe Goldberg’s heinous crimes catch up to him, it was only fitting for Tati Gabrielle’s Marienne to return to help serve some up justice, which Gabrielle said offers Marienne some much-needed closure after the events of Seasons 3 and 4.

“As we do with trauma, when we try to heal, we try to do all the things, and I think particularly Marienne, is one that has been very intentional with healing her traumas just over her lifetime, so this being an exceptionally hard one … how do you work through that?” Gabrielle told TheWrap, adding that Marienne likely has been working through the trauma of being drugged, kidnapped and kept in a cage by Joe (Penn Badgley) throughout the entirely of Season 4, alone.

In Season 5’s penultimate episode, Marienne returns alongside...

'They Really Resisted': You Star Penn Badgley Reveals What He Fought to Keep in the Series Finale
Image
You on Netflixstar Penn Badgley opens up about fighting for a specific aesthetic for Joe's final confrontation of the series.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Badgley discussed how the final, brutal fight scene of the series came together behind-the-scenes, specifically with regard to his iconic killer Joe Goldberg's barely-there wardrobe. "It was probably the only time I'll ever fight to be in a state of undress," Badgley said. "Funnily enough, the writers and the director — the director in particular, Lee — they really resisted this idea that he would be in his underwear. And I don't remember exactly why."

"I think it was partly, like, they wanted the tank top on to show the progression of blood and sweat and dirt throughout the sequence. Which I get, practically speaking," Badgley continued. The star went on to explain how removing much of his character's attire in the series' final fight scene, set...

Penn Badgley Tells How ‘You’ Ends: No, Joe Goldberg Is Not Going to Die
Image
You know what’s funny? We never thought we’d root for a guy who stacks bodies like he’s hoarding baseball cards. But here we are, season 5 of You, and Joe Goldberg’s still kicking. Somewhere between brooding over books and butchering lovers, Penn Badgley’s character forgot how to be the man viewers once irrationally rooted for.

Needless to say, his portrayal of this charming yet chilling bookstore clerk turned murderer has been a tightrope walk of charm and menace, and with the fifth and final season dropping this week, we’re itching to unpack its conclusion. Certainly, we’re both thrilled and apprehensive about how his story wraps up.

Badgley himself has dropped some tantalizing hints, insisting Joe won’t simply rot in prison or meet a grim reaper. Will Joe’s finale redefine retribution, or will it leave us grasping at straws? Let’s dive into the fray.

Goodbye, ‘You’: Show Bosses on Penn Badgley’s ‘Horrific’ Finale Moment, [Spoiler] Returning and Wanting Viewers to See Who Joe Really Is: ‘He’s a F—ing Monster’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the series finale of “You,” now streaming on Netflix.

Joe Goldberg is finally in a cage for good, and not the one of his own making. In the series finale of Netflix’s stalker-rom-com-thriller “You,” Joe, Penn Badgley’s charismatic serial killer, gets his long-overdue comeuppance at the hands of his former victims, who join forces to put him behind bars once and for all.

When we pick up with Joe at the beginning of Season 5, he’s happily married to the uber-rich Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), who’s used her family’s sizable resources to snatch Joe’s son Henry (Frankie DeMaio) from the adopted fathers he was dumped with at the end of Season 3 after Joe flees Northern California, having murdered Henry’s (also murderous) mother, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). Now that Joe has returned to New York City a free man,...
