David F. Sandberg’s 2025 adaptation of the interactive 2015 survival game, Until Dawn, added three Easter Eggs as tributes to the Og game, which you can spot while watching on Netflix. These subtle hints are connected to the game’s famous “Butterfly Effect” feature, where every choice changes what happens next.
Appearing in the form of a butterfly motif during different scenes, each of the three Easter Eggs has a special meaning for the story and for those who know the game well. One of the hints appears in Megan’s butterfly necklace and earrings, which indicate her hidden gift, her psychic nature.
The second hint appears in the form of a butterfly rune in Until Dawn. If you look closely during the scene featuring the pickaxe, you’ll notice a butterfly symbol carved into it. And finally, the third hint appears as a butterfly design made from bones, in the...

Video game adaptations have recently surged in popularity. The trend started on television, with HBO's The Last of Us and Prime Video's Fallout captivating critics and audiences alike. On the big screen, video game adaptations have become big box office hits in recent years. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over $1.3 billion, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of 2023.
Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy's made $297 million to become 2023's highest-grossing horror film. In 2025, A Minecraft Movie made $955 million, ranking as this year's second-highest-grossing Hollywood release. While these types of family-friendly tentpoles tend to dominate the box office, more adult-oriented video game movies often fly under the radar in theaters, but end up performing well on streaming platforms.

Coin Operated, the horror-centric banner founded by It and Annabelle writer-producer Gary Dauberman, has secured the screen rights to The Medium, the award-winning video game created by European developer Bloober Team.
Dauberman and Mia Maniscalco, his president at Coin Operated, will produce the adaptation through the banner.
A search for a writer and a director for the project is underway.
Set in the post-communist era of Poland in the 1990s and taking place mostly in a fictional abandoned hotel in Krakow, the game tells of a woman named Marianna, imbued with psychic abilities, who is called to unravel the mystery of the death of an innocent child.

When Until Dawn first entered theaters, it was a mild success. It received mediocre praise from fans and critics alike on Rotten Tomatoes, but managed to generate $53 million at the global box office. Now, as the 2025 horror film makes its way into streaming, it has the opportunity to start over and find a second chance at success, leaving a mark on the Netflix charts.
According to FlixPatrol,Until Dawn landed at the #2 spot on Netflix's Top 10 Movies in the U.S. on July 25, 2025, just between KPop Demon Hunters and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. The film is based on the 2015 PlayStation game of the same name and was described by director David F. Sandberg as an homage to the horror genre. Until Dawn was described in Collider's review as "Cabin in the Woods meets Groundhog Day with a horror twist," praising its use of different horror tropes and maintaining the spirit of the original game.

On April 25, 2025, the movie adaptation of "Until Dawn" released in theaters. It received a mixed reception: with a 53% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 67% audience rating, and a 5.7/10 rating on IMDb, the movie was generally considered a disappointment. It wasn't a disaster of course — with its relatively low budget of $15 million, its $53 million box office performance worldwide wasn't half bad. But it still wasn't the runaway hit the creators hoped for, and within a few weeks it felt like the world had already forgotten the film.
It turns out, however, that "Until Dawn" has found a second life on streaming. It's currently the #2 most-watched movie on Netflix this week, at least among American audiences. Viewers may not have been able to muster up the motivation to see "Until Dawn" in theaters, but they seem to be interested enough to click play from the comfort of their own homes.

It’s Groundhog Day, but every night ends in death. That’s the premise of Until Dawn, the horror movie based on the video game of the same name. From David F. Sandberg, the director of Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, the film follows a woman and her friends as they visit the area where her sister vanished. While there, the night repeats again and again, and the crew is killed over and over — unless they can make it to morning. The film from PlayStation Studios stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, and Odessa A’zion.

Gary Dauberman, through his Coin Operated banner, is teaming with Brightburn director David Yarovesky to develop a new horror movie, He Never Dies, Deadline reports today.
It appears the title is apt, as the logline reads: “The man they killed keeps coming back. Bigger. Stronger. Less human. No matter what they do…He. Never. Dies.”
Of course, no details have been revealed beyond that, but it feels safe to predict that it’ll be vastly different from He Never Died, which starred Henry Rollins as an immortal cannibal unable to die.
Both Dauberman and Yarovesky, who will write and direct the upcoming project, have been sticking closely to the genre space recently. Yarovesky most recently helmed Locked, a Sam Raimi-produced thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Bill Skarsgård. He previously directed Netflix’s gateway horror fantasy movie Nightbooks.

Video game adaptations continue to be released at a fairly regular cadence. Recently, they've been finding success in the form of TV shows. Titles like The Last of Us and Fallout have been major viewership hits as streaming TV shows adapting popular games.
In the world of movies, video game adaptations have a checkered past. Assassin's Creed (2016), for example, was a major disappointment, and it's one of a number of failed attempts to turn a video game into a massive blockbuster movie franchise. Over the last few years, however, there have been a number of success stories in this space.
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is still going strong after the debut film in 2020, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major hit in 2023, grossing $1.360 billion at the box office. This year, A Minecraft Movie became a viral sensation and was a big success in theaters.

It’s as if Sony has been scouring its database for every last piece of intellectual property that it can reboot. With James Bond gone to Amazon, and its attempt to build a Marvel-like shared universe having erupted in flames, the studio is turning to properties such as 28 Days Later, Ghostbusters, and Karate Kid to keep the coffers full. This week, Sony debuted its reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, hoping that it would generate the kind of interest that Paramount received for its Scream legacy sequel, and Warner Bros. witnessed with the recent Final Destination Bloodlines.
However, it would seem that Sony overestimated the cultural value of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which grossed under $15 million domestically and only around $11 million from overseas markets in its first weekend. This amounts to a global box office debut of $24 million, against a reported budget of $18 million.

After hitting physical media earlier this month, Until Dawn will stream on Netflix this Thursday, July 24.
Based on Supermassive Games’ survival horror video game, David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman.
One year after her sister mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening.
Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again — only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.

Video game adaptations have enjoyed more than their fair share of successful runs in recent times. However, the same time period has seen a declining interest in mainstream horror titles. It's a course of events that has affected Sony’s Until Dawn at the global box office. The horror movie has ended its run at the box office, earning a modest $50 million, which can be categorized as an achievement given the disappointing numbers the genre has endured over the last few years. Until Dawn arrived in theaters back on April 25, 2025, the film is set to try its luck on the small screen. The horror film is now scheduled to land on Netflix beginning July 24, 2025.

For decades, video game adaptations struggled to win over critics and audiences alike. Clunky storytelling, weak acting, and poor fidelity to source material left many adaptations feeling like cash grabs rather than faithful tributes. Flops like Super Mario Bros. (1993) and Street Fighter (1994) created a stigma that plagued the genre, leading to skepticism surrounding any new video game adaptation.
However, 2023 marked a turning point. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over $1.3 billion at the box office to become the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy's exceeded expectations, grossing $297 million to become the year's highest-grossing horror film. These successes signaled a new era, proving that video game adaptations can become massive commercial successes.
This winning streak has continued into 2025. A Minecraft Movie brought in $955 million, making it the year's second-highest-grossing Hollywood release. This success has also extended to television, with HBO's The Last of Us and Prime Video's Fallout captivating critics and audiences alike.

Gary Dauberman, through his Coin Operated banner, is teaming with The Den filmmaker Zachary Donohue on the new horror movie Human Remains, Deadline reports today.
The Donohue-penned script seems to bring a new angle to the exorcism subgenre: the horror takes place on a plane mid-flight.
Human Remains will follow a flight carrying the body of a priest who died during an exorcism. Naturally, the flight experiences some unexpected turbulence.
Donohue is the co-writer and director of 2013’s The Den, one of the first screenlife horror movies that has since amassed a cult following. The filmmaker recently collaborated with Dauberman’s Coin Operated on the upcoming Untitled Horror Movie from André Øvredal, starring Melissa Leo, and is currently in post-production. He’s also behind the indie cosmic horror/mockumentary series The Unknowable.
Dauberman most recently produced Until Dawn, the feature adaptation of the beloved PlayStation game directed by David F. Sandberg.

It's been a while since director Ryan Coogler's Sinners has been available to watch at home, but this doesn't seem to have brought it to a halt at the box office. The movie has completed two full months of release in theaters, and has now overtaken a surprisingly successful superhero hit at the global box office. Released in 2019, the film Shazam! was seen as the brightest example of a DC Extended Universe headed in a less-gloomy direction, following the departure of director Zack Snyder as the franchise's de facto creative head. The movie has now been overtaken globally by Sinners, which also happens to be a Warner Bros. title.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, the movie grossed $363.5 million at the worldwide box office. Sinners has overtaken it by around $100,000. The vampire horror movie also made around $140 million dollars more than the superhero film domestically. But Shazam! was no slouch.

It's often a training ground for blossoming filmmakers on the rise, as they're frequently challenged to get their movie made with limited resources. Low-budget horror tends to breed creativity and, in certain cases, box office revenue. Just look at the careers of Sam Raimi, John Carpenter, and George Romero, all of whom have gone on to become some of our greatest filmmakers. You never really know when the next batch of talent is going to come out of the woodwork, and it looks like we have some new blood to keep an eye on.

David F. Sandberg’s Until Dawn arrives with the weighty expectation that tends to accompany video game adaptations, especially ones as beloved and narratively intricate as Supermassive Games’ original 2015 release. The film, penned by Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler, doesn’t shy away from the challenge. What it delivers is a briskly paced, knowingly constructed horror feature that’s more playful than profound, more inventive than terrifying, and far more entertaining than most of its genre stablemates.
The story begins with a trope-heavy setup, where a group of college friends travel deep into rural nowhere to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Clover’s sister, Melanie. Their car ride, complete with cryptic gas station warnings and an ominous rainstorm, ends at a remote visitor centre in Glore Valley. So far, so familiar. But once the masked killer appears and dispatches the group one by one, only for them to wake up again in the same place,...

Sony's decision to give Karate Kid: Legends an unusually early international roll-out may or may not have paid off. It's too early to tell. But one thing's for sure, the movie hasn't quite lived up to expectations. It grossed less than half of what the franchise's previous installment did in its domestic debut, and hasn't yet passed the $25 million mark. However, Karate Kid: Legends hit its first major global box office milestone recently, and, in doing so, overtook another Sony release from earlier this year.
With $24 million domestically and another $26 million from overseas markets, the film's cumulative global haul now stands at a little over $50 million. Karate Kid: Legends now finds itself marginally ahead of David F. Sandberg's recent horror offering Until Dawn. The difference is that Until Dawn cost a reported $15 million to produce, while Karate Kid: Legends' comes with a reported $45 million price tag. It'll have...

According to Shazam! Fury of the Gods' director, his team had to delete a wild death scene after it garnered a negative reaction from test audiences. Comic book movies are well-known for going through major periods of adjustment to trim down runtimes and adjust story details, particularly when taking test audiences' reactions into consideration
Director David F. Sandberg shared new information on a death scene he deleted from 2023's Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Sandberg addressed taking this specific scene out of the movie following a negative reaction from a test screening for his second DC movie, which impacted the level of gore and violence viewers would accept in the sequel.
Looking back at the movie on his YouTube channel, Sandberg addressed a scene where Lucy Liu's Kalypso, one of Shazam 2's main villains, killed a construction worker sitting in a porta-potty and eating a sandwich. As Kalpso...

David F. Sandberg returns to horror with Until Dawn, a digital-first psychological slasher that twists familiar genre mechanics into a looping nightmare. Releasing on digital platforms from 10 June via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, the film sees a group of teenagers trapped in a remote valley, forced to relive a night of escalating terror that mutates with every iteration.
Ella Rubin leads the cast as Clover, a determined young woman on a mission to uncover the truth behind her sister’s disappearance a year prior. Alongside her friends, she ventures into Glore Valley, where they encounter an abandoned visitor centre and a lurking threat that begins picking them off one by one. But death is not the end. Instead, the group reawakens to the same evening, and the cycle begins again. Each loop brings a new incarnation of the killer and a fresh set of horrors, pushing the characters toward their psychological limits.

After the grand success of Talk to Me a couple of years ago, the Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou are back with their sophomore feature, Bring Her Back. The movie debuted this weekend to positive reviews and solid audience reception, and found a spot on the top five list at the domestic box office. Although it couldn’t match Talk to Me in terms of revenue, Bring Her Back performed better than recent A24 releases such as Death of a Unicorn and The Legend of Ochi.
It earned $7 million domestically this weekend and another $1 million from overseas territories, for a global debut of $8 million. Bring Her Back comes on the heels of hit horror movies such as Sinners and Final Destination Bloodlines, not to mention Neon’s The Monkey, which grossed over $60 million worldwide earlier this year. Directed by David F. Sandberg, this year’s Until Dawn movie – now available on Digital at home – is home to a host of different threats, including Wendigos, a slasher maniac, and even a particularly nasty case of spontaneous human explosion. But one monster that was left on the cutting room floor, we’ve now learned through deleted scenes, was a werewolf!
Both an alternate scene shared by Coming Soon and another deleted scene found on the film’s home video release feature the werewolf that was ultimately cut out of Until Dawn!
For starters, one of the deleted scenes shows a man showing up to the Glore Valley Visitor’s Center, first appearing as a raving and terrified man before transforming into a werewolf and terrorizing the film’s core group of characters during a full moon. The transformation mostly takes place behind a closed door, with the sound design painting the picture.

Until Dawn, the 2025 survival horror film directed by David F. Sandberg, spins a chilling standalone tale inspired by the 2015 PlayStation video game of the same name. With a group of friends trapped in a remote location haunted by a sinister time loop, the movie takes its audience through a terrifying cycle of death, dread, and desperate survival. Built on a foundation of clever ideas and a unique take on the slasher genre, the slasher movie boldly attempts to deliver multiple horror experiences within one storyline. While it stumbles at times under the weight of its ambitious concept, the movie barely manages to create any intrigue with its narrative, eerie atmosphere, and meta-horror nods.

Last year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg would be re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn. Production began in August, wrapping in October, and the film reached theatres last month, earning a 6/10 review from JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols at the time. Now, Until Dawn has received a digital release and is available to rent on Amazon for $19.99, or purchase for the price of $24.99.
As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago mining cave-in that reverberates into the present day, the members of the group must fight through their fear if...

David F. Sandberg and Gary Dauberman Talk Playing In The Genre Sandbox With ‘Until Dawn’ [Exclusive]
Taking a game like Until Dawn and making it into a film is a challenge, especially when the original game, written by Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, was already so cinematic. So, director/producer David F. Sandberg and producer/writer Gary Dauberman, as well as co-writer Blair Butler, decided to take a radically different route: make each night a different subgenre of horror. The result? A smorgasbord of genre delights, each nastier than the next.
In the new film adaptation:
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the night again...

From director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam) and writer Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun), Until Dawn made just under $50 million at the box office.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bd, “This adaptation captures none of the intensity or scares [of the game]. It winds up the equivalent of touring a loud, busy haunted house attraction. It’s packed to the brim with kills and monsters, very loosely connected by its source material, yet with none of the characters or lore as connective tissue. It’s an adaptation that fails its source material in nearly every way, but it also fails as a straightforward horror film.

After surviving plenty of challenges at the global box office in the last few weeks, Sony’s Until Dawn faced its biggest competition yet this week, in the form of Final Destination Bloodlines. The latest installment of the long-running horror franchise exceeded expectations in its debut weekend, while Until Dawn surrendered over 700 theaters domestically. Despite the setback, however, the video game adaptation was able to pass what will likely be its final global box office milestone. While the movie hasn’t exactly set the box office on fire, it has more than managed to recover costs.
With around $20 million domestically and another $30 million from overseas markets, Until Dawn is passing the $50 million worldwide as we speak. The movie probably doesn’t have more lives left and will soon begin a new phase of its journey when it debuts on home video this week. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million,...

Until Dawn Nears $50M Box Office Milestone ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Until Dawn is racing against the clock to cross the $50 million mark globally with only a few days left before Final Destination: Bloodlines crashes into theaters. Despite lukewarm reviews, it has held its own, pulling in $18 million from domestic screens and adding another $26 million overseas. That puts the total at a respectable $44 million (Via Box Office Mojo), which is not bad for a horror flick on a $15 million budget.
Until Dawn Has Surpassed A Robert Egger’s Masterpiece
Until Dawn has done better than a few recent genre outings, even though it hasn’t caught fire like horror movies used to, it even edged past Robert Eggers’ breakout film The Witch, which remains a critical darling.

"I eat lions every goddamn day. If you're not prepared to do the same, then you hang up that hat, walk out that door, and you never come back..." Hell yes - I want to watch this! Some of you will remember a badass short (at 30 mins!) film from 2015 called Kung Fury, made by Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg (no relation to Shazam! director David F. Sandberg). This was his own big project and it was a huge hit when it launched online - watch here. In 2018 he started development on a full-length feature version called Kung Fury: The Movie or Kung Fury 2. He was somehow able to wrangle up Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Hasselhoff for the cast, and shot the film in 2019. But after legal troubles and other setbacks, the pandemic kicked in and the film has been stuck in release limbo. Word is that it's finished...

With Final Destination: Bloodlines lined up for release next week, there isn’t much time left for Sony’s Until Dawn to pass the $50 million mark at the global box office. The horror movie has performed modestly so far, despite mediocre reviews. While it has struggled to attain the level of success that the genre would dependably experience with studio releases until a few years ago, Until Dawn has managed to outperform a string of recent horror movies. The last few years have seen a curious decline in interest in mainstream horror, with more artistic movies breaking through the clutter. For instance, one of this year’s biggest scary movies is The Monkey, while one of last year’s biggest horror films was Robert Eggers' Nosferatu.

While it initially seemed like Until Dawn was going to follow in the footsteps of several recent studio horror movies and underperform commercially, it has since stabilized itself at the box office. Thanks to its restrained production budget, the movie has already turned profitable, which isn't something that can be said for the majority of horror films released in the past year. During this time, the genre's more artistic output has surprisingly performed better than the bread and butter scary movies that could typically be relied upon to deliver the results. Now, after less than two weeks of release, the modestly reviewedUntil Dawnhas out-grossed one of modern horror cinema's best-regarded titles.

Imagine being stuck in a nightmarish time loop, with death being the only reset button, and every time, the nightmare keeps getting worse. That’s the chilling premise of Until Dawn, a cinematic adaptation of the renowned video game.

Has the horror movie curse finally been lifted? With Sinners doing so well and The Monkey emerging as the second-biggest hit in Neon’s history, an argument can be made. But the sort of bread-and-butter horror titles that would routinely do well at the box office still seem to be struggling. Before the pandemic, films like Until Dawn would’ve quietly cracked the $100 million mark. Think: the Resident Evil franchise. But after two weeks in theaters worldwide, the movie has only made it past the $30 million milestone so far. Directed by David F. The summer movie season officially began on Friday with the debut of Thunderbolts*, which is being viewed as a return to box office form for Marvel Studios, even though it's eying an opening weekend haul lower than that of the recent Captain America: Brave New World. The movie led the field on Friday, grossing $31.5 million. This includes the $11.5 million that it made in Thursday previews. It's all set to generate over $70 million in its first weekend of release, with the more bullish projections putting this figure at over $80 million. By comparison, Brave New World grossed $88 million in its three-day debut.
But that movie was barely able to scrape past the $200 million mark in its theatrical run, mainly because of the lukewarm response that it earned from critics and audiences. Roughly 15 minutes into Until Dawn, a creepy petrol station clerk warns a group of teens that “a lot go missing further down the roads”. As they set off towards a familiar forest cabin, it’s hard not to get swept up in the Cabin In The Woods of it all. A well-worn set-up, sure, but there’s hope the horror to come might be just as inventive — maybe even with a similar tongue-in-cheek wink to the camera. That hope sadly fades fast.
The film bears little resemblance to the choice-driven PlayStation horror game it’s based on — and honestly, the retooling makes sense. The game itself is fairly standard horror fare: a bunch of teens in a cabin for a weekend of fun, heads inevitably roll. The joy of the game lies in player agency — you're dropped into a slasher flick and have to see if your choices get everyone (or no-one) out alive.

Horror films about facing your fears are an all-too-common type of movie in the genre. Rosario is one of those movies. It’s an above-average attempt at a tired subgenre, with a strong central performance from Emeraude Toubia and solid effects, all wrapped up in a brisk 85-minute runtime. It’s a nice tribute to Hispanic culture with a freaky twist.
Rosario Review
Rosario follows a young woman who, after the passing of her mother, begins to experience paranormal phenomena. Is it in her head? Are there really monsters after her? It’s left open to interpretation. We watch our main character slowly lose her grip on reality over the 85-minute runtime as she learns to cope with her mother’s death and other trauma she has experienced in her life.
One of the film’s strengths is its mostly single-location setting. Rosario locks herself in her apartment while a winter storm rages outside,...

Sandberg, the toxicity of some fans almost had him writing off IP movies for the rest of his career. The director, whose new film Until Dawnis an adaptation of the popular video game of the same name, also directed another IP-driven franchise in the past. He brought both Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods to the big screen and Sandberg shared with GamesRadar that he almost didn't make it because he received death threats because of his work.
IP stands for "intellectual property" and means something based on a pre-existing bit of media. It's your Marvel films or franchises. Which includes things like Sandberg's Shazam! work. When the first film starring Zachary Leviwas released, it was met with praise from fans of the DC comics character. The sequel,...

It was, all things considered, a substantial weekend at the box office. For the first time in a very long time, four different movies made $20 million or more on the same weekend, which seemed unthinkable during the worst moments of the early pandemic era. Unfortunately, Sony Pictures' video game film adaptation "Until Dawn," which takes its name from the beloved horror video game of the same name, was not one of those movies. All the same, let's hit the brakes before we call it a flop.
Director David F. Sandberg's "Until Dawn" had to settle for fifth place this weekend domestically with $8 million, with Ryan Coogler's' "Sinners" topping the box office charts with a stellar $45 million in its second frame. Behind that was the 20th anniversary re-release of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" ($25.2 million), "The Accountant 2" ($24.4 million), and "A Minecraft Movie" ($22.7 million). Only then do we get to Sandberg's latest,...

The word-of-mouth for Until Dawn hasn’t been great, with Sony’s video game adaptation currently “rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 53% Tomatometer score. The film’s audience score is a bit higher at 69%, but most fans and critics seem to agree that the film misses the mark and doesn’t satisfyingly translate the video game into a terrifying big screen experience.
That’s probably why Until Dawn didn’t make much of a splash at the box office over the weekend, scaring up just $8 million in 3,055 theaters here in the United States. The film debuted in the #5 spot on the domestic box office charts, with most horror fans choosing Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners in its second weekend over Until Dawn in its opening weekend.

Until Dawn is based on the hit PlayStation video game of the same name, but it's not a direct adaptation. In fact, it's quite the opposite, with a Groundhog Day-style time-travel device used to pit a group of survivors against a series of increasingly terrifying threats.
In a cabin in the woods (where else?), they face various horror movie monsters and even drinking water that makes them spontaneously combust. However, each time they die, the group wakes up, a little worse for wear, and the day starts all over again.
Thirteen nights in, Until Dawn's lead, Clover, confronts Dr. Hill—Josh's mysterious psychiatrist from the game—and learns that everything that's happened stems from her damaged psyche. It's not entirely clear how, but Hill hopes to eventually reduce them all to their most primal instincts, turning them into wendigoes.
