HBO Europe’s ‘Success’: Marjan Alcevski on Sexism, Working with HBO
HBO Europe’s ‘Success,’ its first HBO Adria original, directed by Academy Award-winner Danis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”), kicks off with a life management guru, Kiki, on stage, under a dazzling spotlight, lecturing to an unseen audience on “six steps to success.”

“First, they fired me for having a sick son, not being able to work 12 hours a day. Then they took my apartment. Then it got worse,” Kiki remembers as “Success” flashes back to him as an unemployed designer facing eviction who does nothing when a woman, Vinca, a bank clerk, is brutally attacked a few cars in front of his on a motorway tailback.

Reproached for cowardice by his son, Kiki doesn’t hesitate the second time round, jumping in when a man begins to beat up his teen girlfriend, Blanka in his local park. His action, aided by Haris, a prestigious architect, and Vinca, leads to them killing Victor.

Sarajevo Festival Draws the Best of Southeastern Europe
Mirsad Purivatra
The Sarajevo Film Festival, which was launched in 1995 during the four-year siege of the capital in the midst of the Bosnian War, has always relied on a mixture of self-sufficiency and smart alliances with international partners. It’s a combination that will be deployed again during its 24th edition, running Aug. 10-17.

The event is characterized by its director, Mirsad Purivatra, as an international festival with a focus on a region: Southeast Europe. Purivatra was inspired to adopt a regional focus for Sarajevo after he visited Sweden’s Goteborg Film Festival, with its focus on the Nordic region. This year, Sarajevo’s industry section, CineLink, will look to Scandinavia again for inspiration, this time centered on television drama, an area of growth for both regions.

Norway will be the focus of a panel event as an example of how a local TV industry can transform itself, says Jovan Marjanovic, Sarajevo’s head of industry.

HBO’s Antony Root on Creating European Shows for a Global Audience
As U.S. viewers discover among their VOD options HBO Europe’s original production series “Wasteland,” the thriller set in the bleak coal fields of north Bohemia and filmed in 2016 in the Czech Republic, the company says more shows are on their way.

The eight-part thriller, directed by Ivan Zacharias and Alice Nellis and scripted by Stepan Hulik, screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival before becoming one of the first European series produced by the premium cable company to reach U.S. audiences. It was followed more recently by Hungarian and Czech versions of the romantic comedy “When Shall We Kiss,” the latter starring Anna Geislerova.

“If we own the property, why would we not make it available to people?” posits Antony Root, HBO Europe’s head of original production.

While he confesses about the programming’s potential success across the Atlantic “I don’t know how it’s going to do,...
