10 Horror Movies That Ripped Off Stephen King Stories
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.

Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

Fright Night (1985) It May Not Be A Copy Of King's Work, But You Can Definitely See His Influence

Many Stephen King novels, and their subsequent movie adaptations,...

A Women's Club Goes Rogue in Real Time Thriller 'Soft & Quiet' Trailer
Image
"We can't come on too strong, okay? Soft on the outside…" Momentum Pics has revealed a trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Soft & Quiet, which first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Apparently it's such a strong debut that Blumhouse picked it up at the festival to help distribute it, with a release set for this November. The film, which plays out in real time, follows a single afternoon in the life of an elementary school teacher as she organizes a mixer of like-minded women. When the group heads home to "keep the wine flowing", the teacher encounters a woman from her past at the local store, leading to a volatile chain of events. Uh oh. The ensemble cast features Stefanie Estes, Olivia Luccardi, Eleanore Pienta, Dana Millican, & Melissa Paulo, with Jon Beavers, Cissy Ly, Nina E. Jordan, & Rebekah Wiggins. This starts out all nice and lovely,...

‘Soft & Quiet’ Review: ‘White People Are the Worst’ in Real-Time Blumhouse Thriller
Image
That homemade cherry pie you see Emily carrying in the opening scene of “Soft & Quiet”? It’s not what you think. But then, neither is Emily, a tall blond kindergarten teacher who cuts through the woods behind school to attend a gathering of like-minded women. Women who call themselves “Daughters for Aryan Unity” and complain about concepts such as “reverse racism.” Upon arriving, Emily removes the aluminum foil and reveals a giant swastika carved into the crust. It’s her idea of a joke — like the transgressive Nazi salute she sneaks in the parking lot after the meeting.

You know what else Emily tells herself is just a joke? Gathering her spiteful white friends and driving out to the house of a local waitress — a woman who isn’t white, and who doesn’t fit Emily’s narrow idea of racial superiority — with the goal of confiscating her passport.
