‘Homecoming’ Team On Delving Into Wide-Open Spaces In Season 2 – Contenders TV
Image
The first season of Homecoming was deliberately claustrophobic, set largely in the Homecoming Transitional Support Center with nods to All the President’s Men and The Parallax View. Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video drama is a little bit less Alan Pakula and a little more Brian De Palma, according to director/executive producer Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

“One of the draws to me was, having loved Season 1 so much, and having loved Sam [Esmail]’s aesthetic approach, the challenge was how do we translate that feeling when so much of that feeling was the Homecoming facility set,” Alvarez said during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “That was so meticulously designed to fit that tone, but now we’re going to be in forests and lakes so we have to re-conceive how to technically approach the scenes so that it felt like Homecoming but on a larger canvas. Sam was digging...

Janelle Monáe in Homecoming (2018)
‘Homecoming’ Season 2 Teaser: Janelle Monae Wakes Up Alone in a Rowboat (Video)
Janelle Monáe in Homecoming (2018)
Amazon has dropped a new teaser for Season 2 of “Homecoming,” and it opens to find star Janelle Monáe alone in a rowboat in the middle of a lake — with no oars.

In the new season, which premieres May 22, Monáe’s character has no memory of how she wound up in the middle of a lake — or even who she is. “Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative,” according to Amazon.

Stephan James reprises his role as Walter Cruz, “who is trying to build a new life following the traumas of war and the Homecoming Initiative, when he begins to realize that there’s an even more insidious version of the program underway — if only he can remember,” Amazon adds.

‘Homecoming’: Season Two Deals With First Season “Fallout” & Will Be “Much More Expansive” – TCA
Janelle Monáe in Homecoming (2018)
The second season of Amazon drama Homecoming will be more expansive than the first with much of the action taking place outside of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center.

The cast and crew of the psychological thriller, including new star Janelle Monáe, talked up the differences between season one of the show, which starred Julia Roberts, and the forthcoming season, which airs later this spring, at the Winter TCA press tour.

In the second season, Monáe’s character wakes in a rowboat adrift a lake, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative.

Co-creator and exec producer Eli Horowitz admitted that the team, which also includes co-creator Michael Bloomberg, Kyle Patrick Alvarez and exec producer Sam Esmail learned a number of lessons between the two seasons.

Sam Esmail
The Amazon drama “Homecoming” will see another big change going into its second season.

In addition to Julia Roberts not returning to star, Sam Esmail will not direct any episodes for Season 2, Variety has learned. Both Esmail and Roberts will remain on the show as executive producers, however.

Amazon declined to comment.

Esmail directed all 10 episodes of the show’s first season, helping to define the show’s unique visual style as he did on the USA Network show “Mr. Robot.” Esmail is also credited as a co-creator of “Homecoming” along Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who created the podcast on which the show is based and serve as co-showrunners.

The show received considerable critical praise upon its release, holding a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review for Variety, Caroline Framke wrote that Esmail “uses his signature long takes and off-center framing shots to disquieting effect, adding Hitchcockian angles...

Spotify Buys Podcast Players Gimlet Media & Anchor; Eyes $500M In 2019 Deals
With a view to becoming the world’s leading audio platform, Spotify has acquired Gimlet Media as well as startup Anchor. This is the first big content move by the music streamer under Dawn Ostroff, the TV industry veteran who came aboard as Chief Content Officer in June. It follows word earlier this month that Spotify was in talks for Gimlet, the company behind popular podcasts “Homecoming,” “StartUp,” “Reply All” and “Crimetown.” Terms of today’s deals were not disclosed, but Spotify says it is not stopping there and could spend $400M-$500M on multiple acquisitions in 2019.

Reporting Q4 2018 results this morning, Spotify said it has reached 96M premium subscribers and 207M monthly active users. It also netted its first-ever quarterly operating profit with 94M euros ($107.1M).

Increasing podcast listening on Spotify is an important strategy for driving growth, the company said in a statement. “We intend to lean into...

Spotify In Talks To Acquire Podcast King Gimlet Media
Spotify is in discussions to acquire Gimlet Media, the company behind popular podcasts “Homecoming,” “StartUp,” “Reply All” and “Crimetown.” Deadline confirmed that talks were underway, and if a deal makes it would be the first big content move by the music streamer under Dawn Ostroff, the TV industry veteran who came aboard as chief content officer in June. She began the new job in August.

Spotify, which went public in April 2018, has been looking to expand its offering in podcasting though it already has some content on its platform.

In January 2018, Brooklyn-based Gimlet Media — formed in 2014 by former This American Life producer Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber — launched Gimlet Pictures, a film and TV arm headed by Chris Giliberti. That formalized Gimlet’s forays into TV, most recently Amazon’s Homecoming starring Julia Roberts, and the in-the-works Annapurna Pictures movie Man of the People, with Robert Downey Jr attached. All are based on Gimlet podcasts.

Julia Roberts Will Not Return for ‘Homecoming’ Season 2
Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Julia Roberts will not be starring in “Homecoming” Season 2 at Amazon, Variety has confirmed.

The Oscar-winning actress will remain on the show as an executive producer, however. “Homecoming” was picked up for two seasons when it was initially ordered at Amazon, but Roberts only had a one-year deal to star on the show, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation.

The role marked the first series regular role of Roberts’ career. Other cast members include Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Sissy Spacek, Shea Whigham, and Alex Karpovsky.

“Homecoming” is an adaptation of the fiction podcast of the same name from Gimlet Media. It is about staffers at a secret government agency where some are desperate to rejoin civilian life. Written by “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, the political thriller centers on a caseworker (Roberts) at a secret government facility, her supervisor and a soldier.

‘Homecoming’: Julia Roberts Not Coming Back For Season 2; Who Will Return?
Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
When in 2017 Julia Roberts signed on to star in her first series, Homecoming, she made a one-year acting deal for the project, from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Universal Cable Prods. It has been the case for many big stars who have ventured into television over the past couple of years, and the storyline of her character was crafted with that in mind.

Homecoming, which has a two-season order from Amazon, is currently breaking stories for the upcoming second season, which will deviate from the popular Gimlet Media’s podcast Season 1 was based on. It is unclear exactly who from the original cast would come back, but I hear Bobby Cannavale will likely return, breakout star Stephan James also will probably be back, along with Hong Chau and maybe Shea Whigham.

The series is expected to introduce new characters and cast members next season.

‘The Life Aquatic’ Producer Describes the Moment She Realized Wes Anderson’s Film Would be a Box Office Bomb
Nina Jacobson
Nina Jacobson knows a lot about TV and film, but in a recent interview, she explained how she also knows when a project might be doomed.

Speaking with Alex Blumberg on the new Gimlet podcast “Without Fail,” Jacobson talked about her experiences producing Wes Anderson’s 2004 “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” After working on “The Royal Tenenbaums,” she soon got swept up in the director’s next movie.

“When Wes Anderson gave me the script for ‘The Life Aquatic,’ it was a bigger budget and I was so in love and I was so blinded by my love that I went to battle to get considerably more money to make this movie than what we had spent on his earlier movies,” Jacobson said. “I will always remember at our first big screening of the movie afterwards people would come up and congratulate me on what a brave movie it...

Janelle Monáe in Homecoming (2018)
TV Review: ‘Homecoming,’ Starring Julia Roberts
Janelle Monáe in Homecoming (2018)
At first glance, “Homecoming” seems to be a cocktail of buzzwords. Take one part transmedia origin story (“based on the popular Gimlet Media podcast…”), add one part movie star trying her hand at television (Julia Roberts), mix well with an established TV auteur (“Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail), and serve. In practice, however, those ostensibly disparate elements come together to make sharp slices of truly eerie drama. Even when it gets a little too mesmerized by its own stylistic trickery, it’s hard not to get sucked in by “Homecoming’s” haunting mission creep.

The new Amazon series from podcast creators Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz follows the shady practices of a mysterious center that advertises itself as a resource for helping combat veterans assimilate to civilian life. Counselor Heidi Bergman (Roberts) appears to have a genuine interest in helping her patients, most especially amiable newcomer Walter Cruz (Stephan James...

Tiff TV Preview: ‘Homecoming,’ ‘Sorry For Your Loss,’ and More Are Making the Small Screen a Big Deal in Toronto
Television is taking over film festivals, and Tiff has been part of the trend since 2015. That’s when the Toronto International Film Festival first launched its Primetime program, and since then attendees have been treated to premieres like “Black Mirror,” “Casual,” “The Girlfriend Experience,” “The Deuce,” “Transparent,” and more.

In 2018, the TV slate includes big brand names and movie stars — including Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen — as well as a number of lesser known series looking to make their mark. Tiff has seen similar names in the past, but not all of the TV shows debuting at the festival made the impression their distributors, producers, and stars hoped when they landed on TV. Just like the buzziest films may not break the box office, the festival may not elevate TV enough in this peak TV era.

Still, it’s a publicity boon and a helpful prestige play. Amazon, for instance,...

Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
Sam Esmail Takes Credit for ‘Finally’ Making Julia Roberts-Dermot Mulroney an On-Screen Couple
Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
You can thank “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail for finally getting Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney together. Fictionally speaking, that is, as the two-time co-stars will be playing lovers on Amazon’s upcoming thriller series “Homecoming.” And it only took them three projects, over two decades, and the help of Esmail, to officially hook them up on screen.

“This is our third time working together,” Roberts told reporters during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday, of teaming up with fellow “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “August: Osage County” alum, once more.

“But this is the ‘reunion,'” Esmail, who is directing “Homecoming,” chimed in. “Like, ’cause the second time you guys weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend.”

Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Amazon Studios used its big Comic-Con presentation today to unveil the premiere date for Homecoming, its psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts in her TV series-starring debut and directed by Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail. The half-hour series will bow Friday, November 2, on Prime Video.

The streaming service also showed fans a first-look teaser from the series, which is based on the popular Gimlet Media podcast. (Check out the video above and the teaser art below.) It acquired rights to the project a year ago with a two-season pickup.

Roberts plays Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. “Shall we get started?”

Amazon revealed the first teaser trailer for “Homecoming,” its upcoming psychological starring Julia Roberts, during the Prime Video panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 on Friday. And though it only gives us a tiny glimpse of Roberts in character as caseworker Heidi Bergman we’re already entranced by her calm, collected mannerisms. Luckily, Amazon also revealed that you won’t have to wait much longer, as “Homecoming” will premiere this November on the streaming service.

The rest of the one-minute clip promoting the mind-bending drama directed by “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, explores the abandoned halls of what we can safely assume is the titular Homecoming Transitional Support Center where Heidi workers, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life.

Alex Blumberg in The Colbert Report (2005)
TV Review: ‘Alex, Inc.’ Starring Zach Braff
Alex Blumberg in The Colbert Report (2005)
A sitcom about a guy who podcasts seems like a randomly generated punchline to a joke about media in 2018 — perhaps like one of the white cards in the game Cards Against Humanity, a phrase just waiting to fit the blank space of a setup. In this case, the white card is “Alex, Inc.,” and the setup is something snarky about increasingly Balkanized media demographics. No one laughs.

“Alex, Inc.” is an adaptation of Alex Blumberg’s popular 2014 podcast “StartUp,” a real-time chronicle of how he worked to get a media company off the ground. Blumberg brought listeners into every detail of the process — pitching a billionaire, negotiating an equity split with his business partner, and sharing his anxieties with his wife. The podcast is now poised to launch Season 7, and Blumberg’s company Gimlet Media is now not just valued at $70 million but also the home of several beloved podcasts.
