In every aspect of the entertainment industry, there are always projects that leave us wondering what could’ve been. In the gaming industry, Days Gone is one of them. When it launched in 2019, many were quick to label it just another post-apocalyptic game with no depth. But that’s not quite what it was.

Inspired by The Walking Dead, Days Gone had a lot of similar themes and ideas to the legendary show. But one particular season of the show shaped the game’s world and mechanics. With the launch of Days Gone Remastered on April 25, we can experience all of it again.

Frank McGuire (Roxburgh) is a successful and respected cave diver, exploring one of the last unexplored cave systems in the world, Esa-Ala. Accompanied by his billionaire sponsor Carl Hurley (Gruffudd) and his son Josh (Wakefield) amongst others, his expedition takes a terrifying turn when a cyclone traps the explorers in the cave. With colleagues topside already assuming the party is dead, the only way they can escape is to explore the caves further and hope to find a route to the sea.

Sanctum is based on screenwriter Andrew Wright’s real life experiences and while this is marketed as a James Cameron produced picture (Cameron has worked on documentaries previously with both John Garvin and Andrew Wright), the only obvious Cameron trademark on this is the 3D.

Chicago – If “Avatar” stood as a reminder of James Cameron’s undying popularity with audiences, “Sanctum” stands as proof that Cameron’s name alone can’t always sell a picture. Though the filmmaker merely served as executive producer of this murky thriller, the screen overflows with his signature tropes: underwater landscapes, 3D photography, hokey characters and pedestrian dialogue.

It nearly comes as a shock to discover that “Sanctum” was in fact not written and directed by the technologically ambitious, proudly commercial auteur. This sophomore directorial effort from Alister Grierson (“Kokoda”) is the sort of trash entertainment that undiscerning FEARnet subscribers may appreciate. The film prides itself on being devoid of the usual knee-jerk scares in cave-bound pictures, though it’s no less formulaic or artificial than any run-of-the-mill studio product.

Although James Cameron’s Avatar hasn’t yet made it out on Blu-ray 3D for wide purchase, available only in bundles with Panasonic hardware, the filmmaker who’s one of 3D’s biggest fans will see his next movie released on Blu-ray 3D the same date it hits the regular formats. Sanctum will arrive on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on June 7 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The underwater adventure movie wasn’t a big hit in theaters, grossing only $23 million in wide release, but it bowed with mixed reviews and the knowledge that although Cameron’s name was on the poster, he was producing, not directing. Helming duties were done by Alister Grierson in only his second feature film after the action movie Kokoda in 2006.

Our thoughts: Who’s ready for another cave movie? Featuring James Cameron as an executive producer, Alister Grierson’s 3D adventure “Sanctum” follows a group of fearless explorers as they try to uncover the secrets of one of the world’s most mysterious caves. But when a nasty weather storm crashes the party and traps our adventurers hundreds of feet below the ground, panic quickly ensues as they struggle to find a way back to the surface.

Like the rest of the surprisingly full house at the theater today, I was fooled by the marketing campaign for Sanctum. The trailers make it out to be a suspenseful James Cameron flick. It is neither. James Cameron is one of nine producers. Seeing his name over a watery backdrop brought visions of The Abyss to mind; I expected something in the same vein. Sanctum is not, though.

Based on the true story of Andrew Wight, who co-wrote the script with John Garvin, Sanctum is about the relationship between diver Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) and his son Josh (Rhys Wakefield). During an expedition of the Esa-ala Caves in the South Pacific, Frank and his crew (including Josh) get trapped after a flood closes off their exit from the caves. Left with minimal supplies, the group must find their way out of the caves through flooded caves and dangerous cliff-like climbs.

HollywoodNews.com: Despite the wealth (no pun intended) of filmmakers interested in investing in a future blockbuster, James Cameron is one of the few folks in Hollywood who puts his money where his mouth is: After investing some $300 million in 3D technology developing his own camera system in order to shoot “Avatar,” he’s further funding the use of 3D by executive producing “Sanctum,” director Alister Grierson’s story of a group of cave divers who get trapped miles underground. Yeesh, it's like the middle ages of screenwriting, although I'm pretty sure Alice Parkinson's character hadn't read John Garvin and Andrew Wight's Sanctum script when she asked that last question because the answer is painfully obvious... You can drown! Drown, drown, drown! And even if you fall down, break your face open and still live you better believe someone will be around to drown you! As one character says, "This cave will kill you in a heartbeat," but what he didn't add to that was, "and if it doesn't I will!"

Sanctum has a lot of good in it. Trouble is, all of the “good” are things that you may have seen before. Then, of course, when out goes the good, in has to come the bad. It’s a well enough executed film, but when it comes down to it, Sanctum doesn’t do enough to develop proper tension, and overall it’s got too much of an uneven tempo.

It’s Super Bowl weekend, so at least we have that to look forward to. But in the film-going world there isn’t much in the way of new movies that are worthy of getting excited about. The two big choices are The Roommate and Sanctum. If you are lucky maybe your market just got 127 Hours, Biutiful, Another Year or Blue Valentine, at which point any of those are must sees. I recommend checking out The Mechanic, which debuted nationally last week, and that was a fun action flick with some good acting and stuff.

Sanctum, directed by Alister Grierson, is a 3-D effects slide show that wants desperately to be a feature film. Set in an underwater cave that no human has ever seen the other side of, the stakes skyrocket once a hurricane traps our small group of adventurers in this unexplored darkness.

Unfortunately, the script (written by John Garvin and Andrew Wright) and the acting isn’t quite up to par with the blockbuster-ready storyline. What’s more, the digital look of it all strips away the gloss of film stock, something that can make grand adventures like Lawrence of Arabia or The Abyss feel like something other-worldly put right in front of your eyes. Sanctum looks too real for a story so preposterous.
