How to Watch ‘Little Big Town’s Christmas at the Opry’: Is It Streaming?
Image
Little Big Town is all in on Christmas this year and, following the October release of their first holiday album, “The Christmas Record,” they’re hosting this year’s “Christmas at the Opry.”

“This is an incredible honor for us, and we are beyond thrilled to share this special evening with viewers and fans across the country. We’ve invited some of our dearest friends to join us on stage, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the magic of the holidays at such an incredible venue,” the band said in a statement when the special was announced.

You can expect Little Big Town members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, Kimberly Schlapman and Jimi Westbrook to perform some songs from “The Christmas Record,” but they’ll have some help decking the halls. The glitzy holiday event was filmed on Oct. 4 in front of a live audience at the at...

Little Big Town’s ‘Road to Here’ Led to Them Becoming Country’s Family Band
Image
Twenty years ago, Little Big Town were seemingly at the end of their rope in trying to make it in Nashville. The country music quartet had two failed recording contracts in the rearview mirror, with no real prospects to come.

“We were broken, and we just sat down and wrote that record,” Karen Fairchild tells Rolling Stone. “In a way, it was the best time, because we didn’t have anybody looking over our shoulder while we were making music.”

That record would be Little Big Town’s breakthrough 2005 album The Road to Here.

Little Big Town Goes Big on Christmas With Prime-Time Holiday Special and Album to Close Out Group’s 25th Anniversary Year
Image
Little Big Town likes to do things in fours, as the ensemble’s vocal-quartet configuration would indicate. So the country-pop group wasn’t about to let its 25th anniversary pass with just one commemoration when four would do: a national tour with their longtime friends in Sugarland; a greatest hits album; a Christmas record; and the quartet’s first two-hour prime-time special, “Little Big Town’s Christmas at the Opry,” airing tonight on NBC. They couldn’t have picked better ways to celebrate one-fourth of a century together.

As a cherry on top, members Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook get to revel in this milestone while most would agree they’re looking and sounding pretty much as they did at their inception point at the end of the 1990s. Their secret? “Smoke and mirrors,” says Westbrook. “I was gonna lie and say we get into cryogenic...

10 Groups Who Should Do The Masked Singer
Image
The Masked Singer season 9's third place finisher was California Roll, who was revealed to be a capella singing group, Pentatonix, and there are several other groups who would also be perfect for the mystery singing competition. Pentatonix is a five-member act, which is the largest in Masked Singer history. They brought their signature harmonies to songs such as "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, "Creep" by Radiohead, and "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.

The Masked Singer season 9's California Roll was not the first group to compete. That distinction belongs to Hanson, who competed on The Masked Singer season 5 as the Russian Dolls. In season 7, En Vogue appeared as the Queen Cobras, while The Brady Bunch brothers, Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (Peter), and Mike Lookinland (Bobby) were revealed to be the Mummies in season 8. Wilson Phillips were the season 8 runner-up, impressing everyone with...

How Wynonna Judd’s ‘Judds Final Tour’ Resulted in a Celebratory, All-Star Concert Special… and a Doc That Deals With Grief
Image
In an ultimate show-must-go-on moment in country music history, Wynonna Judd was not about to let the legacy of the Judds slip quietly into the sunset, rather than go out as spectacularly as intended, after her mother, Naomi Judd, died by suicide in April 2022. And so the Judds farewell tour that had been scheduled for last fall did proceed, against all probabilities, with a bevy of top stars trading places as Naomi’s stand-in each night. The emotional end of that road was captured for not just one but two new specials premiering on different Paramount platforms — “Wynonna Judd: Between Hell and Hallelujah,” a feature-length documentary that debuted Wednesday on Paramount+, and “The Judds: Love Is Alive — The Final Concert,” a two-hour performance special bowing tonight on CMT at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

With the on-air premieres of the doc and concert special being spaced a few days apart, Judds...

Little Big Town Search For Seventies Gold on ‘Mr. Sun’
Image
Though vocal groups are a longstanding tradition in country music, the quartet Little Big Town have been compared to Fleetwood Mac just as often as they’ve been compared to the Oak Ridge Boys. That’s due in part to their mix of male and female voices, as well as the way they’ve largely favored folk-rock arrangements over honky-tonk and country shuffles.

On their 10th studio album Mr. Sun, the group of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet lean fully into the softer side of Seventies pop,...

Shania Twain at an event for Walk the Line (2005)
Country music legends Shania Twain, Little Big Town, Tanya Tucker and Martina McBride will guest star in Fox’s upcoming musical drama “Monarch,” which features Oscar winner Susan Sarandon and multiplatinum country star Trace Adkins as country music royalty looking to defend their legacy.

The special appearances will take place throughout the first season, which is set to premiere on the channel Sunday, Sept. 11. It’ll then move to its regular time slot Tuesday, Sept. 20.

“Monarch,” the upcoming Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s

Sandbox Entertainment president-ceo Jason Owen, one of Nashville’s top management figures, has signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division to produce long-form film, television and digital projects, with the “definitive” June Carter Cash documentary among the first of their collaborations to be announced.

The companies say that over a period of years they plan to develop “a library of projects that tell the stories of music, history, and culture set in the South” — very familiar stomping ground for Owen, a leading figure in Nashville’s music industry who currently helps guide the careers of Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, Little Big Town, Faith Hill and Kelsea Ballerini.

The June Carter Cash doc will combine interviews with family members with archival footage culled from “unprecedented access to the Cash estate,” much of it, of course, related to her husband Johnny Cash or her lineage before that...

Hear Ingrid Andress’ Version of the Song She Wrote for Charli Xcx
Image
Roughly six months after releasing her debut album Lady Like, Ingrid Andress has issued a deluxe version of the project with a handful of new recordings. Among them are a new take on her Number One hit “More Hearts Than Mine” featuring Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town, and Andress’ cover of “Boys,” the 2017 hit she co-wrote for British pop star Charli Xcx.

Prior to her breakout as a solo artist, Andress focused on her songwriting in Nashville and Los Angeles. Cass Lowe and Jerker Hansson, who produced Charlie Xcx’s recording,...

Lori McKenna Previews New Album With Moving Ballad ‘When You’re My Age’
Charlotte Gainsbourg and Morgan Davies in The Tree (2010)
Lori McKenna returns July 24th with The Balladeer, the follow-up to her Americana award-nominated album The Tree. The new project reunites her with producer Dave Cobb, who recorded the album at Nashville’s RCA Studio A.

“When You’re My Age,” the poignant first single to be issued from The Balladeer, is a intensely moving piano ballad featuring McKenna’s Love Junkie’s collaborators Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose on backing vocals. The song is a pre-Mother’s Day love letter to McKenna’s five children as they face the...

How Little Big Town Became Country Music’s Most Unconventional Band
Karen Fairchild
Karen Fairchild’s son has a question for his mom: “Is soundcheck finished?”

“Not yet babe, I wish,” says Fairchild, standing onstage at Carnegie Hall, where her band Little Big Town have been running through vocal arrangements and stage directions for a performance that evening. “It’s almost done,” she reassures her child, who’s been patiently waiting in the otherwise eerily empty esteemed theater. The quartet has been soundchecking for over an hour.

The reason for the longer-than-usual rehearsal: Nightfall, Little Big Town’s new album, their ninth in 18 years,...

The 2019 Cma Awards’ Attempt to Honor Women Goes Sideways
“Play our f-ckin’ records. Please and thank you.”

So read the inside of Jennifer Nettles’ cape on the Cma Awards red carpet, while the back of the Sugarland singer’s suit jacket bore the words “equal play.” Early in the evening, it seemed as if the sartorial statement may indicate a more outspoken tone than in CMAs past. As the night went on, however, it was clear that wasn’t the case.

Conversations about the gulf between the representation of male and female artists on country radio have reached fever pitch in recent years,...

Cma Awards 2019: Carrie Underwood, Tanya Tucker, Highwomen Open the Show
Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire opened the 53rd annual Cma Awards with their rendition of “Those Memories of You,” a song that Parton originally recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris for their 1987 Trio album.

Following the easygoing rendition, the co-hosts’ trio quickly grew in number as Tanya Tucker, Crystal Gayle, Martina McBride, Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Gretchen Wilson, Jennifer Nettles, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, and the Highwomen made their way onstage to perform. In most cases, that meant their signature songs: Tucker sang “Delta Dawn,...

Little Big Town Ditch the Music Video Glitz for Live Performance of ‘Over Drinking’
Karen Fairchild
Little Big Town eschew the traditional dramatic video treatment in favor of actual musical drama in their engaging new live-performance video for the twangy “Over Drinking.”

Nestled into a compact gray room, the foursome — Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook — are joined by a keyboard player and guitarist to perform their latest single. Without any video storyline, the song itself becomes the star, with Fairchild handling the verses with accompaniment from Schlapman, before all four join in to harmonize on the chorus. The performance emphasizes the old-school country wordplay of the song,...

Kane Brown
Cmt Boosts Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Dan + Shay as ‘Artists of the Year’
Kane Brown
Country music’s youngest superstars don’t always catch a break with the Cma Awards. When the latest slate of nominations was announced, Kane Brown had none, and Luke Combs had a far-from-leading three. But Cmt is making up the difference by including these two ascendants as part of their annual “Cmt Artists of the Year” slate, set to be broadcast live Oct. 16 from Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

Dan + Shay, who have gotten more awards love from the CMAs and Grammys, will also be celebrated in the program. The roster of honorees is rounded out by two artists with longer runs as country superstars, Carrie Underwood.

Brown, Combs and Dan + Shay don’t count as freshmen anymore, but being elevated to this status even as figurative sophomore or juniors represents Cmt’s clear desire to make a statement by honoring the genre’s youngest or freshest arena headliners.

Watch Tenille Townes, Brandi Carlile Sing ‘Somebody’s Daughter’
Tenille Townes
Canadian singer-songwriter Tenille Townes is joined by Brandi Carlile for an acoustic performance of the song “Somebody’s Daughter,” which Townes released as a single in September 2018. Their collaboration is part of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store’s new “Five Voices, One Decade” initiative, a 50th-anniversary celebration of the restaurant chain aimed at lifting up women in country music.

As her solo performances often demonstrate, Carlile is a formidable entertainer with a powerful voice. But she’s equally capable of playing a support role, which she does here, adding higher...

While the world waits patiently for the much-anticipated return of the Dixie Chicks, a new trio — or at least a temporary one — is here with a version of the classic Chicks hit “Wide Open Spaces” to fill that harmonious void. Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and Karen Fairchild, along with Ingrid Andress, recorded the acoustic cover for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store’s new initiative “Five Decades, One Voice,” meant to celebrate the women of country music on the 50th anniversary of the brand. See Little Big Town’s Minimalist Version of ‘The Daughters’ on ‘Fallon’
Jimmy Fallon
Little Big Town performed their single “The Daughters” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, offering an updated musical arrangement for their powerful message about equality.

With band members Jimi Westbrook, Kimberly Schlapman, Karen Fairchild, and Phillip Sweet all dressed in matching tuxedos, the performance of the song took on an air of symphonic sophistication. Helping that was the minimalistic, dramatic arrangement — a sparse combination of acoustic guitars, cello, piano, and the group’s layered harmonies.

That stylistic choice put even greater focus on the song’s important and timely lyrics,...

As Carrie Underwood Tops Cmts, Country Gets Over Its Women Problem for a Night
Carrie Underwood
It often seems like women have almost as hard a time catching a break at country awards shows as they do on country radio, judging from the fact that neither the Cma Awards nor Acm Awards could come up with a single female to nominate for entertainer of the year for the last two years running. That women problem didn’t run over to the Cmt Music Awards, where Carrie Underwood was not only nominated for the top prize Wednesday night but won it, picking up the fan-voted video of the year award for “Cry Pretty.”

That Underwood was not in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to accept the prize was nothing personal. She’d just finished an off-site performance of her new single, “Southside,” a few miles away for an outdoor crowd of glowstick wavers at the Parthenon. Underwood also won favorite female video for “Love Wins,” putting her tally...

Cmt Music Awards 2019: Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris Among Top Nominees
Miranda Lambert
It’s a four-way tie for most nominations at the 2019 Cmt Music Awards, as Miranda Lambert, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris and Zac Brown Band each garnered three nods. The nominations were announced by “Closer to You” singer Carly Pearce this morning on NBC’s Today.

Morris’ uplifting 2019 single “Girl” earned the singer-songwriter nominations for Video of the Year as well as Female Video of the Year. Additionally, her friendship with Brandi Carlile earned a third nomination for their performance of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural...

Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert Among Top Nominees for Cmt Awards
Brothers Osborne
Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert and the Zac Brown Band are tied for the most nominations each, three, for this year’s Cmt Music Awards, set to air live on the country music network June 5.

The list of artists with two nods in the network’s eight categories is an exceptionally long one: Brandi Carlile, Carrie Underwood, Cole Swindell, Dan + Shay, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Julia Michaels, Kacey Musgraves, Kane Brown, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Sugarland and Taylor Swift.

The number of non-country artists up for CMTs is plentiful — starting with Swift, who self-deported from the genre some years back, but is up for collaborative video of the year and duo of the year for appearing with Sugarland in “Babe,” which she wrote and gave to the Nashville duo to record before making her video cameo.
