Julius Avery's goofy-ass demonic thriller "The Pope's Exorcist" was released in April of 2023, but I think it knows in its heart that it's a January movie. "The Pope's Exorcist" is about Father Gabriele Amorth, a real-life priest who worked as a specialized exorcist for the Diocese of Rome, the district that the Pope himself oversees. Amorth was one of the founding members of the International Association of Exorcists, a very real enclave of some 900 priests who specialize in demonic possession. Amorth wrote two memoirs based on his experiences as an exorcist ("An Exorcist Tells His Story" and "An Exorcist: More Stories"), and the writers of "The Pope's Exorcist" extrapolated them into a very, very loose film adaptation.
Russell Crowe, trying on a very thick Italian accent, plays Amorth, and the film details a specific demonic possession he encountered in...

For most people, horror is an acquired taste. The genre explores the darkest, most disturbing parts of ourselves and our psyches, making for stories that can range from grotesque and gory to just downright disturbing. For critics, that may not necessarily be what they look for in a movie, but for horror fans, it is the precise reason they adore the genre. As such, in the ongoing (and endlessly tiresome) culture war between critics and audiences, horror tends to be more divisive than not. Despite the site's questionable operations and easily-manipulated review system, Rotten Tomatoes continues to be the battleground in which this war is waged.
Each case is different: Some films have ardent fandoms behind them, others garner cult followings over time, and some premiere to critical fanfare but simply do not age with audiences. Whatever the case may be, these 12 horror films feature significant enough gaps in their...

A gripping Cold War espionage thriller is in the works, with iconic actor and Gladiator star Russell Crowe set to lead a high-stakes true story of secrets, betrayal, and courage.
According to Deadline, Crowe is set to lead Billion Dollar Spy, a Cold War thriller based on David E. Hoffman’s bestselling book. The film, produced by Walden Media and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road Pictures, tells the true story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet engineer who risks everything to pass classified intelligence to the CIA.
Directed by Amma Asante, the project is currently in pre-production. Harry Lawtey joins Crowe as Tom Lenihan, the CIA operative who forms a bond with Tolkachev as they navigate the dangers of espionage behind the Iron Curtain. Russell Crowe is one of the most distinguished actors of his generation. Recently, Crowe's career has deviated towards the horror genre — with two similar roles in The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism. Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years running during the 2000s for his lead role in Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and The Insider. While Crowe has experienced notable highs in his career, he has encountered significant setbacks, too. Poker Face sits at Crowe's lowest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with a meager 9%, and his most recent slate of films has not performed well.
In 2023, Crowe portrayed the real-life Vatican exorcist in The Pope's Exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth. Months later, Crowe featured in The Exorcism, where he depicts a single father and recovering addict, starring on a cursed film set. The comparisons between The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism were addressed by the writer, who believes "it's sort of a happy accident.

An exorcism movie starring Russell Crowe has climbed the streaming charts yet again. Crowe was born in New Zealand in 1964 and became a rising star off the back of prominent movies including 1992's Romper Stomper, 1997's L.A. Confidential, and 1999's The Insider before being launched as a superstar with his Oscar-winning performance in Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winning 2000 movie Gladiator. Crowe has been nominated for two other Oscars (for The Insider and A Beautiful Mind) in addition to winning one BAFTA and two Golden Globes.
Russell Crowe movies have occupied many different genres in the more than two decades since he won his Oscar. In addition to his comfort zone of dramas, he has also appeared in comedies, Westerns, comic book movies and a musical (Les Misrables). Theres just something about a horror feature thats based on a true story that will almost immediately pique the attention of audiences. Such was certainly the case for Julius Averys (Son of a Gun) return to filmmaking with 2023s The Popes Exorcist. The story of one mans faith against the power of the devil, the film was based on two books from the man who fought the fight and lived to tell the tale, Father Gabriele Amorth - also known as The Popes Exorcist. Starring Russell Crowe (Gladiator) as the titular faith fighter, the movie did what it could to scare up box office numbers, but fell lower than Sony Pictures was likely hoping, earning just $77 million against its $18 million production budget. Despite a fine but not excellent financial gain and mixed reviews from critics, which includes a 51% critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is terrorizing its way around the world,...

With the imminent release of The Exorcism, the horror of demonic possession is once again at the forefront of moviegoers' minds. Generally speaking, films that explore demonic possessions have a pretty specific formula. The first act of the story establishes the victim being possessed. The second act involves testing the demon's defenses, which leads directly into the inevitable rite of exorcism for the third and final act.
Many films involving exorcisms draw on what most viewers associate with the rite by incorporating Catholic and Christian ceremonies. Others are more willing to take an unorthodox approach by amalgamating elements from different religions and cultures. Some even use modern-day technology to reach beyond the veil. Each film's approach is notable, but only one thing matters: how scary the exorcism is.

As director Joshua John Miller prepares to release The Exorcism, starring Russell Crowe, comparisons to The Exorcist are inevitable. However, the link is more than coincidental as the 1973 film featured the filmmaker's dad, Jason Miller, as Father/Dr. Damien Karras.
Speaking to ComicBook, Miller recalled what it was like to see his dad in the classic horror film. "I think the first time I saw it was on TV, so it was heavily edited but still creepy," the director said. "I just remember watching it on a tiny TV in my grandmother's living room. I just remember sitting in her living room, and it was a TV on a tray. It was kind of transgressive because it was like, 'Ooooo you're up late watching a dangerous movie."

If you were entertained by Russell Crowe in a cassock (and tootling around on a Lambretta) as Father Gabriele Amorth in last year's The Pope's Exorcist (and its $76.9 million box office off the back of an $18 million budget suggests plenty of you were), you'll no doubt be happy to hear that, according to producer Jeff Katz, Crowe will be battling demonic forces once more in a sequel.
Katz hit social media to announce that he'd gotten word of the sequel decision.
The Pope's Exorcist, which was directed by Julius Avery, finds Crowe as the real-life Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. His latest mission took him on a tricky quest to help a possessed American boy and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
The end of the film teed up sequels, but there's no word yet on what case the new movie will feature.

It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!

Russell Crowe will save souls and ride Lambrettas again: "The Pope's Exorcist" is officially getting a sequel! Producer Jeff Katz took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to announce the news, posting, "Amorth Nation -- I just got the call...It's Officially Happening!!!" It may not seem like it but The Pope’s Exorcist was a hit at the box office last year, scaring up $76.9 million on a production budget of just $18 million. It looks like Russell Crowe cannot leave behind the horror and mystery genres so soon. The horror film was a sleeper hit at the box office and, despite not being perfect, was liked by many.

The Pope’s Exorcist mostly earned mixed reviews from critics. However, it seems like the makers want to mimic the first film’s unexpected success. Earlier this year, Russell Crowe discussed the possibility of numerous follow-ups to the Julius Avery directorial. Russell Crowe's back-to-back exorcism films have fans craving more, sparking excitement for possible sequels and a cinematic universe. Crowe's latest project, "The Exorcism," takes a different twist with a meta-approach. While fans eagerly await more exorcism films, plans for sequels to "The Pope's Exorcist" have hit a snag.

Earlier this week, we noted with some surprise that Russell Crowe – who memorably played Father Gabriele Amorth in last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist – is set to don his priestly garb once again for a new horror movie.
At the time, The Exorcism (previously known as The Georgetown Project) was but a twinkle in the UK release calendar's eye. Despite being picked up for distribution by Vertigo in the US, a UK date was, and remains, somewhat elusive.
But that won’t stop us from getting unreasonably excited about the film’s first trailer. Check it out below…

Sure enough, a trailer for The Exorcism has just arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above!
Crowe recently played real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, which could turn out to be a franchise starter. He actually worked on this movie before making The Pope’s Exorcist – in fact, The Exorcism was first announced four and a half years ago. So it’s good to see that it’s finally making its way out into the world.

A couple days ago, Vertical announced that they will be giving the horror film The Exorcism (formerly known as The Georgetown Project), which stars Russell Crowe, a North American theatrical release on June 7th, with the streaming rights going to Shudder. Now the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that they have given The Exorcism an R rating – and we’ve learned that the film’s trailer will be dropping online tomorrow!
The Exorcism has been rated R for language, some violent content, sexual references and brief drug use. This isn’t the first time the movie has been given an R rating, as it was previously given an R for the exact same reasons last June, when it was still going by the title The Georgetown Project.

Russell Crowe stars in another demonic possession horror film after The Pope's Exorcists' mixed success. Though Crowe's performance was strong, critics felt The Pope's Exorcist was too bogged down by tired tropes. The new film, titled The Exorcism, offers a stronger premise and a fresh story, possibly redeeming Crowe in the horror genre.
Russell Crowe's new film creates an intriguing trend after The Pope's Exorcist as he will be stepping back into the demon possession subgenre. The Pope's Exorcist follows Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe), the Vatican's head exorcist, as he investigates a strange case of a possessed child. As he digs deeper into the case, he uncovers secrets the church has been keeping hidden for years as he tangles with a demon the likes of which he has never encountered before.

Russell Crowe recently played real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, which could turn out to be a franchise starter… but before Crowe made that movie, he made a different supernatural thriller that deals with exorcism. Four and a half years have gone by since it was announced that Crowe had signed on to star in a film that was then known as The Georgetown Project, with Joshua John Miller directing. Now retitled The Exorcism, that film has been acquired by Vertical for a North American theatrical release that’s scheduled for June 7th. The streaming rights are in the hands of Shudder.

Hollywood doubled down on demonic possession in 2023, tapping into the genre's lasting appeal with films like Evil Dead Rise. It Lives Inside takes a unique twist on the possession sub-genre, blending Hindu traditions and supernatural battles for Samidha's soul. The film's bittersweet ending leaves Samidha as the vessel for the malevolent demon, setting up a potential sequel with a cold, cruel twist.
The following contains spoilers for It Lives Inside.
Throughout 2023, Hollywood leaned into the demonic possession genre harder than usual. Horror fans reveled in Russell Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope's Exorcist, not to mention, Evil Dead Rise, which terrified audiences with the latest generation of Deadites. These films reinforced the idea that this niche sub-genre is one studios think audiences will always flock to, and rightfully so. Such films usually do well at the box office, despite critics usually panning their ilk as a rule.

It’s been almost exactly one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but everything has been quiet since then. During a recent interview with The Six O’Clock Show, Crowe confirmed that a sequel is in development – and that The Pope’s Exorcist was actually meant to be chapter one in a trilogy!
As it turns out, things have been quiet on the Pope’s Exorcist front because there was a behind-the-scenes shake-up with the studio executives, but it sounds like Crowe still has hopes that the trilogy is going to happen. He told The Six O’Clock Show (with thanks to MovieWeb for the transcription), “(A sequel) is in discussion at the moment. The...

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, which made an impressive $76 million in theaters last year and shot to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts in the wake of its theatrical release. We had learned almost exactly one year ago that Screen Gems was working on a sequel, but what’s the latest on that?
In a recent chat with Virgin Media Television’s The Six O’Clock Show – brought to our attention by MovieWeb – Russell Crowe himself provided a fresh update on the future of our favorite Vespa-riding exorcist. It sounds like a trilogy had originally been planned at Screen Gems, but a change of studio heads has muddied up the works at this particular moment in time.
Crowe explained to the show when asked if he would be reprising the role of Gabriele Amorth, “That’s in discussion at the moment.

The Pope's Exorcist's success paved the way for a possible sequel, or even a trilogy, opening up new avenues for storytelling. Crowe's enthusiasm and a wealth of source material from Father Gabriele Amorth's books suggest exciting possibilities for potential sequels. A stalled ambitious vision for a franchise due to studio changes hints at a future trilogy that could explore exorcism globally.
Russell Crowe has hinted 2023's The Pope's Exorcist might just be the beginning of a larger saga.
With a modest budget of $18 million, the movie managed to rake in over $77 million. The film's box office performance prompted discussions of a sequel. However, Crowe, the star of the film, suggests that the future might hold even more than just one additional installment.
And remember, the man that's based on, Gabriele Amorth, he wrote 12 books. So we have more than enough source material to do one or two more of those films.

Russell Crowe reveals that talks regarding The Pope's Exorcist 2 are ongoing, and there could even be a third film. A change in executives at the studio has caused delays, but Crowe affirms that they envisioned the character of Gabriele Amorth as being flexible in terms of what he can appear in. The Pope's Exorcist was a box office success last year.
The Pope's Exorcist 2 gets an encouraging update from Russell Crowe. Released in 2023, The Pope's Exorcist tells the story of Gabriela Amorth, the leading exorcist at the Vatican who uncovers a dark conspiracy. The horror movie, which was directed by Julius Avery, was a surprise box office hit upon its release last year, and it later found streaming success on Netflix.
In a recent interview on The Six O'Clock Show, Crowe shares an update on the status of The Pope's Exorcist 2, revealing that a third film might also be on the cards.

From the original classic The Exorcist to Blumhouse's upcoming reboot of the same, the fascination with stories of possession and exorcism has not seemed to fade even though the overall template of these films tends to remain identical. Add to that a star like Russell Crowe and some budget, you end up getting a big-ticket horror film like The Pope's Exorcist. After directing Sylvester Stallone in his first superhero avatar in Samaritan, Julius Avery is back with another film with an A-lister steering the story. In the titular role, Russell Crowe dons the hat of a veteran exorcist who balances the act between faith and science while managing to sneak in a joke even in the most gut-wrenching situations. While the events depicted in the film may feel a bit larger-than-life bringing into question the factuality of the events, Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth is very much inspired by a real-life...

“You need spiritual realignment— you’re too far from Christ,” has become an increasingly rare statement to hear in contemporary horror films, yet in this year’s Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism— in which a woman with diagnosed schizophrenia is subjected to a violent exorcism of her internal “demons” that goes awry— once again, we’re being confronted with just how scary it must be to completely lose autonomy over one’s own body and belief system. Exorcism movies enjoyed a long streak of popularity in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, as movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Last Exorcism, and anything else with the “E” word in the title seemed to attract both the casual and devout horror crowds and dominated box offices. But for the last handful of years, mainstream horror has largely evaded these types of movies, save for The Conjuring franchise and things less...

Scary, funny, violent, and probing, The Pope's Exorcist tells a familiar story with added flare, thanks to Russell Crowe's fantastic performance as Father Amorth. The film explores historical themes like the Spanish Inquisition to create a real-life feel, although reviewers have mixed opinions on how well the scares, humor, and story blend together. Despite some generic elements, The Pope's Exorcist is worth watching for Crowe's captivating portrayal of the cool and witty priest, with many critics praising his performance as the highlight of the film.
The Pope's Exorcist reviews have a lot to say about Russell Crowe's devil-fighting priest. Premiering in 2023 from director Julius Avery, The Pope's Exorcist follows Father Gabriele Amorth (Crowe), the Pope's personal exorcist. A cavalier and insubordinate priest, Amorth is a talented exorcist, but he's constantly fighting the Catholic Church's bureaucracy and censorship. William Friedkin's most iconic work is his 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, but what most people don't know is that he made another film about exorcisms. That being said, it's not exactly what you'd think. In 2017, Friedkin released a documentary titled The Devil and Father Amorth, which captures Father Gabriele Amorth's ninth exorcism that he has performed on an Italian woman simply referred to as "Christina." It's a fascinating piece of filmmaking on multiple levels. Given Friedkin's groundbreaking work with his notorious 1973 film, his growing fascination with exorcisms over the years since, and his skill as a documentary filmmaker, The Devil and Father Amorth is made with a recipe for success. Unfortunately, some odd filmmaking choices and shady narrative moves make this project a bit less credible, even if you have faith in some form of spirituality.

For every great exorcism-themed horror movie, there are a handful of forgettable ones. Despite this lopsided equation, possession movies are still popular, with recent releases like The Pope’s Exorcist and Evil Dead Rise having success in theaters and on streaming platforms.
While many exorcism-themed horror movies can turn audiences off, the scariest in the genre stand out for their compelling stories, top-notch performances, terrifying jump scares, and genuine thrills. Hit movies from this genre, like The Conjuring and The Exorcist, have a tangible sense of realism that haunts audiences long after the film is over.

This article contains some spoilers for "The Nun II."
If horror has a name, it must be ... Indiana Jones? Scoff if you must, but the first three cinematic adventures of Henry Jones Jr. contain numerous horror movie bonafides, from the melting faces of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to the heart-ripping terror of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and, of course, the rapid-aging transformation seen in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
Honestly, though, it'd be fair if you did scoff, because Indiana Jones has become a little less synonymous with religion-inspired horror imagery thanks to his latter-day sequels, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." Supposedly the last ever Indy installment (certainly the last with star Harrison Ford), this year's "Dial of Destiny" sent Dr. Jones off with what I consider to be a clever, insightful, and richly layered adventure film.

There are all sorts of subgenres within the horror category, but none are arguably as iconic or memorable as exorcism films. There's something inherently scary about a straight-up dogfight between God's righteous holy forces and the Devil's demonic army, regardless of whether a viewer has faith. Perhaps it feeds into humanity's fears of the unknown or their constant desire to know what's beyond the mortal coil. Either way, possessions and exorcisms are a definite mainstay in the genre. As a result, The Pope's Exorcist isn't the first movie to center its plot around the topic. However, the picture varies from its contemporaries by treating the main antagonist differently.
By giving the King of Hell, Asmodeus (Ralph Ineson), a full-fledged personality, The Pope's Exorcist pivots the demon away from the typical two-dimensional villains that appear in similar movies. The Pope's Exorcist, based on the life of Gabriele Amorth, received mixed reviews but fascinated audiences, leading to a sequel in the works. Amorth performed over 100,000 exorcisms during his time as the Vatican's official exorcist, but found that only 2% of cases were genuine possessions. The success of The Exorcist film increased public interest in exorcisms, benefiting Amorth and other real-life exorcists, despite negative portrayals of the Catholic Church.
Gabriele Amorth, the real-life title character from The Pope’s Exorcist, performed an astounding number of exorcisms throughout his career. The Pope’s Exorcist is one of the horror genre’s only biopics, telling the life story of the Pope’s personal exorcist, Amorth, played by Russell Crowe. The movie received mixed reviews from critics, but it was a big enough hit with audiences for Sony to start developing a sequel, with Crowe set to reprise his role as Amorth. Critics might not have been impressed,...
