Aminah Nieves, the breakout star of Paramount’s 1923, brought the house to its feet — and to tears — at the 2025 IndieWire Honors, where she was awarded this year’s Breakthrough Performance Award. Nieves, who plays Teonna Rainwater in the acclaimed Yellowstone prequel, delivered a raw, emotional acceptance speech that celebrated not only her milestone moment, but the memory of her late co-star, Cole Brings Plenty.
The award recognizes Nieves’ gut-wrenching performance as a young Apsáalooke woman escaping the brutal reality of a Catholic boarding school — a storyline that has become one of the most talked-about and socially relevant arcs in the Yellowstone franchise. But on the stage at IndieWire’s Hollywood event, Nieves shifted the spotlight to her collaborators, and most movingly, to a friend gone far too soon. It was the tribute to Cole Brings Plenty — who portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds in 1923 — that struck the most powerful chord.

[This story contains major spoilers from the penultimate episode of 1923 season two, “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters.”]
The penultimate season two episode of 1923 delivered death after death. A whopping seven bodies were left in wake of the sixth episode from creator Taylor Sheridan, titled “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters.” Everything that happened will barrel the Western saga into what is sure to be a propulsive season finale, but let’s stop for a moment and mourn what was lost.
Michael Spears has been playing Runs His Horse for two seasons on the Yellowstone prequel series, with Jeremy Gauna inheriting his role as Pete Plenty Clouds after the untimely death of original star Cole Brings Plenty. Cole died about two months after the season one finale released. (A cause of death was not revealed.) Television titan Taylor Sheridan has undeniably become one of the most prominent and exciting talents on the small screen, with the Yellowstone creator, writer, director, and producer further capitalizing on the massive success of the streaming juggernaut by crafting captivating prequels and sequels revolving around the beloved Dutton clan. In 2022, Sheridan enlisted Hollywood greats Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren to star in his Western drama series 1923, a sequel to the original hit that focused on Jacob and Cara Dutton as they fight to keep their sprawling ranch afloat while being faced with countless threats of all shapes and sizes.
Featuring the additional talents of actors like Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, and Timothy Dalton, 1923 unsurprisingly proved to be a knockout with passionate audiences, with its debut episode attracting 7.4 million viewers and becoming Paramount+'s largest debut ever. 27-year-old Cole Brings Plenty appeared as sheepherder Pete Plenty Clouds in the first season of the acclaimed hit,...

Aminah Nieves and Cole Brings Plenty had ended the first season of 1923 with new opportunities for their characters, Teonna Rainwater and Pete Plenty Clouds, and their blossoming love story.
The first season of the hit Yellowstone prequel series was a breakout one for Nieves as it tracked her Indigenous character, Teonna, and her epic journey escaping a 1923-set Indian assimilation boarding school run by the Catholic Church where she was abused.
After everything she endured, the season ended with her reuniting with her father (played by Michael Spears) and beginning to fall in love with the son of the man who helped save her, Pete Plenty Clouds (played by the late Cole Brings Plenty). Her final scene featured the three of them riding off to Wyoming in hopes of escaping the priest (Sebastian Roché) and other men who are now hunting her in season two, which returned after two years on Sunday.

How much money would it really take to save a ranch like one on “Yellowstone”? If you believe Beth (Kelly Reilly), the Dutton clan owes the government something like hundreds of millions of dollars in estate taxes following their father’s death, something that doesn’t seem like it can be right but also might be, because who really understands the tax code anyway? Either way, the Yellowstone’s in hot water, and the Duttons are having a fire sale.
That’s really the crux of this week’s episode, “Give The World Away.” The Duttons are selling basically everything not nailed down at the ranch, from $3 million horses bought by sucker Brazilians to chuck wagons and tractors. Cattle ranching, it seems, relies on a precarious mountain of loans and financial bets and one slight twist, one wrong move — brucellosis in a field or the death of the governor/ranch owner,...

On June 20, 2018, Paramount Network aired the first episode of a neo-Western drama television series called Yellowstone – and a megahit franchise was born. Lately, news regarding the franchise has been focused on what’s coming further down the line. We’ve been hearing casting announcements about the spin-off series The Madison and 1923, and we’ve heard that the flagship show, which was said to be ending with “season 5, part 2,” might continue with a sixth season after all… but before we get there, we still need to see Yellowstone season 5, part 2, which has a premiere date of Sunday, November 10th at 8pm Et/Pt. With that date still a couple months away, a batch of first look images, and a very quick teaser (which still features A Lot of Kevin Costner) from the new episodes have arrived online. In Hollywood, the portrayal of Native American stories has long been a subject of scrutiny when depicted through the lens of non-Native creators. Such is the case with filmmaker Taylor Sheridan, known for his work on projects like the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923, as well as the 2017 film Wind River. As a white man, Sheridan has faced criticism for his handling of these narratives, accused of appropriating and misrepresenting Native American experiences.

Mo Brings Plenty, an actor who has worked closely with Sheridan on his projects, has stepped forward with a behind-the-scenes perspective that challenges prevailing criticisms. In this narrative, Brings Plenty sheds light on Sheridan’s approach to storytelling, presenting a counterpoint to the existing critiques.

The creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves is setting the record straight about whether the show is a spinoff of 1883.
