Gottfried was the original voice of the scarlet macaw Iago in Disney’s 1992 animated feature film, Aladdin, and would go on to play the character in further animated productions.

After the Aladdin curtain call on Tuesday, Don Darryl Rivera who plays Iago in the Disney Theatrical Productions musical, addressed the crowd saying, “Tonight, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate the life of a comedy legend. A funny man with an indelible voice. The man who breathed life into Iago for the animated film, Mr Gilbert Gottfried.”

After its Tuesday evening performance, Broadway’s “Aladdin” paid tribute to Gilbert Gottfried. Gottfried’s family shared that the comedian died after battling a long illness earlier in the afternoon.

Actor Don Darryl Rivera, who serves as the production’s original and continuing Iago, honored Gottfried with a speech during the show’s curtain call. Gottfried was the first actor associated with the role of Iago, lending his unmistakable voice to the mischievous macaw in the original 1992 animated film “Aladdin.”

Update Disney’s Aladdin will resume performances on Broadway tonight following last night’s cancellation after members of the show’s company tested positive for Covid.

In a statement this afternoon, producer Disney Theatrical said the musical will return to The New Amsterdam Theatre for its 7 p.m. Et curtain tonight.

“Our extensive protocol system to test our employees and identify positive cases worked, and allowed us to act immediately to contain those cases,” the statement reads.”Given the thoroughness of our Covid protocols and a vaccinated workforce, we remain confident that the environment is safe for our guests, cast, crew and musicians.”

Last night’s performance was canceled shortly before curtain when Disney Theatrical announced that “breakthrough Covid-19 cases have been detected” within the company of Aladdin. The announcement marked the first confirmed cancellation of a show since Broadway reopened over the summer.
