LeVar Burton Joins ‘National Spelling Bee’ as Owner Scripps Hopes for Buzz
Image
Can the venerable Scripps National Spelling Bee take on the look of a Winter Olympics or “American Idol”? Its backers are about to find out.

Organizers of the event, which has kept Americans trying to figure out how to connect the right letters for words ranging from “sanitarium” to “xanthosis” for nearly a century, want to add new elements to the mix that might make the contest look less like something for elementary-school students and more like “America’s Got Talent.”

Actor LeVar Burton, known for his turn as the host of public television’s “Reading Rainbow,” is joining the proceedings. And producers hope to boost “the Bee” with backstage looks at contestants and a set of vignettes that give viewers a peek at how the spelling champions made their way from school competitions to the national stage. It all takes place as Scripps, the longtime owner of the contest, takes...

First Lady Jill Biden To Make Special Appearance On ‘Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards’ Saturday
Image
The First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, will make a special appearance during the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards this Saturday. She is not the first First Lady to appear on the show – in 2012, Michelle Obama presented the Big Help Award to Taylor Swift.

Dr. Biden’s appearance at the Kids’ Choice Awards takes place during the Month of the Military Child and provides her with an opportunity to recognize and thank the children of our service members and veterans.

Appropriately, the audience will include 45 Southern California military children and their families.

Co-host Miranda Cosgrove will introduce the First Lady, who will speak on the resilience of today’s youngest generation — especially children of military members and veterans — and encourage young Americans to keep growing, learning, and giving back to their communities.

“The First Lady has long proven her commitment to youth and to families and we are...
