The 10 Best Dhanush Performances
Image
De-aging technology, be gone! Shave off his beard, and from a ruthless, cold-hearted brute, Dhanush slips into the role of a cocky teenager with convincing ease. From his powerful, throat-grabbing performances in Asuran and Karnan to the painfully relatable and light-hearted roles in VIP and Uthama Puthiran, Dhanush is the living testament of a chameleon.

There is no restraint to his acting abilities, and it’s incredible. There isn’t a role he hasn’t pushed himself in, not a single one slapped with the tag of mediocrity. He puts himself out there, experimenting with various characters, dabbling in multiple genres, and deviating from the usual norms of blockbuster cinema. The result is a sprawling, amusing filmography replete with performances of immense range. Dhanush is unlike the stereotypical Tamil superstars; there’s an air of professionalism in his work and a careful choice of characters, strongly echoing the work of Kamal Haasan.

On Trisha Krishnan’s Birthday, Subhash K Jha Selects Her 5 Finest Performances
Image
For Trisha Krishnan’s birthday, Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on her career and selects her five finest performances

Long before Nayanthara and Parvathy Thiruvothu, Trisha was among the first female heroes of South Indian cinema, grabbing attention and acclaim in one author-backed role after another in Tamil and Telugu. Here are my favourites.

1. Varsham:

Trisha’s Tiger Tale…she teams up with Prabhas in this original version of Tiger Shroff’s Hindi Baaghi. Exploited and controlled by her father, Shailaja seeks solace in the rain, romance, and songs. Every time Trisha and Prabhas bump into each other, it rains hence the title(duh). While the film is distinctly mediocre, Trisha rises above the script (as she is wont to), elevating her character to something more than just a patriarchal victim.

2. Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana(2005, Telugu):

A bhai-bahen story interwoven into a delicate romance, Trisha excels as a traditional...

Film Review: Thangalaan (2025) by Ranjith Pandurangan
Image
If one were to search for the country that constantly produces over the top movies of epic scale one would have to look no further than India. Ranjith Pandurangan‘s Tamil title “Thangalaan” is definitely within the category, although instead of complete mythology/fantasy (as in the case of “Baahubali” for example) his effort has its base in history. Screenwriters Azhagiyae Periyavan, Tamil Praba and Tamizh Prabha based their story in the Kolar Gold Fields during the British Rule in the late 1800s, coming up with a movie that can also be described as a historical drama.

Thangalaan is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam

The story begins with British officer Clement, whose insatiable hunger for gold leads him to the ancient mines of Tipu Sultan in Kolar, Karnataka. He believes the only way to extract it is by enlisting the Veppur tribals, traditionally skilled miners, promising them a share...

The 10 Best Malayalam Movies Of 2024
Mammootty
The Malayalam movie industry in 2024 found itself at a critical juncture, grappling with a series of controversies and scandals that have cast a shadow over its reputation. This year marked a watershed moment in the ongoing battle against sexual harassment and discrimination, with the long-awaited release of the Hema Committee report. Although delayed by over four years and heavily redacted, the report has sparked a powerful wave of discussions and scrutiny within the industry.

Additionally, the year has witnessed intense debates over the portrayal of Malayali culture in cinema, particularly the depiction of disorderly conduct of Malayalis in public spaces, and the needlessly graphic, often gratuitous, on-screen depiction of sexual violence and the objectification of women. At the heart of these controversies are concerns about the underrepresentation of women in the industry, with many highlighting the prevalence of ‘invisible women’—typecast characters who lack depth or agency. Further fueling the...

Thangalaan: Why Chiyaan Vikram’s Upcoming Film Deserves an Immediate Ott Release for Wider Audience Access! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

In September, we reported that the Tamil movie Thangalaan, starring Vikram and Parvathy Thiruvothu, would be available on Netflix from September 20, 2024.

However, that date came and went without a release. Later, one of the film’s producers shared an update on X (formerly Twitter), informing the public that Thangalaan is now scheduled for a Diwali streaming release. According to him, Netflix believes that a festive season launch is well-deserved for this major title. He also dismissed rumors that claimed Netflix backed out of the deal to purchase streaming rights due to the film’s poor theatrical performance, calling them baseless.

But are you curious why the film has just been released on Netflix? The simple answer is a legal issue. Specifically, Porkodi filed a public interest litigation with the Madras High Court,...

Swara Bhasker says Hema Committee report is ‘heartbreaking, familiar; Showbiz is not just patriarchal its also feudal in character
Image
Swara Bhasker recently expressed her deep concern and solidarity after reading the findings of the Hema Committee Report, which exposed widespread harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry. The actor took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt note, where she highlighted the distressing familiarity of the report’s revelations, calling them “heartbreaking because it is familiar.” She acknowledged the male-centric and patriarchal nature of showbiz, which she believes normalizes predatory behavior and silences victims.

Swara lauded the brave efforts of the Women In Cinema Collective (Wcc) for their relentless fight against sexual harassment and violence in the industry. She praised their courage in demanding the establishment of an expert committee to examine the working conditions of women and offer solutions. Swara’s note emphasized how the industry often rewards silence and labels those who speak out as “trouble-makers,” thus perpetuating a toxic environment where power dynamics favor the perpetrators.

Review: ‘Manorathangal’ is a Cinematic Tribute to the Literary Icon
Image
Manorathangal (Mindspace), an anthology series in Malayalam, is an assortment of nine segments, by nine different directors, based on the short stories by the literary giant, Mt Vasudevan Nair, who has also written each of them. Veteran actor, Kamal Hasan, introduces us to each of these stories that capture the depth of human relationships, the clash between tradition and modernity, and the poignancy of life’s fleeting moments. In the introduction, Hasan informs us that the Malayalam film Kanyakumari (1974), which was written by Nair, played a crucial role in his career. While adapting each of the stories for the screen, the period in each of them has not been altered from the original text. It is a creative choice that preserves the authenticity of Nair’s work, and enhances the nostalgic essence of the narrative, and temporal nuances as they were originally intended. But barring a few of the stories,...

Film Review: Undercurrent (2023) by Christo Tomy
Image
Patriarchy in Indian society is deeply rooted, with the consequences for women being evident throughout. At the same time, the issue has been the source of a number of movies, particularly during the latest years, with titles like “Biriyaani” being one of the first that comes to mind. Christo Tony also attempts his hand at the concept, through an approach, though, that brings two women in direct clash.

Undercurrent is screening at Indian Film Festival Los Angeles

Anju is a young woman who was forcibly made to give up on her relationship with the Hindu Rajeev, instead marrying Christian Thomaskutty, in a concept that has left her bitter but still devout to the ‘rules”. As such, she lives in her husband's house and has to follow the orders of her mother-in-law, Leelamma, and her husband. Unfortunately, quite soon after the wedding, Thomaskutty suffers from an ailment that leaves him essentially...

Netflix Pulls Indian Film From Platform After Backlash From Political Groups
Image
Netflix has pulled a film from its Indian streaming platform following a backlash from offended rightwing Hindu groups.

Annapoorani: the Goddess of Food tells the story of a young woman from the Brahmin caste, and her aspirations to become one of India’s best chefs. The Guardian reports that the film has been criticised for its depiction of a member of a traditionally vegetarian caste cooking and eating meat. The film has also been criticised for its depiction of Hindu deity Lord Ramthat, implying he ate meat while in exile.

The newspaper reports that Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Vhp), a hardline rightwing Hindu group began spearheading a protest against the film on Wednesday, saying it was “intentionally released to hurt Hindu sentiments.” Protests also occurred outside Netflix offices.

Within 24 hours, The Guardian reports that the film’s makers Zee Entertainment, had apologized, saying the film would be withdrawn and re-edited to prevent any further offence.

Switching gears to ‘Silence 2’, Prachi found herself under the nurturing wing of Manoj.

Sagar told everyone that Charles wasn’t a great fit for the job, as he was mentally unstable. Sagar had it all: wealth, power, and fame, but his perfect life took a nosedive when a newspaper clipping predicted the death of his dog. At first, Sagar made it out to be some kind of silly prank, but soon, the prediction written on the paper became a reality.

Image
A bloody, thrilling, and deathly venture, the trailer for Telugu star Naga Chaitanya’s series ‘Dhootha’ has released a stunning, and tonally dark trailer, fusing a relentless pursuit for truth by an investigative journalist who much to his own horror, finds himself encircled by deaths and suicides, showing that sometimes, the price for truth is blood.

Starting off at a conference, the trailer sees the actor as a journalist who is telling others that the actions of the state, be it through police, judiciary, or politicians, can only be brought to accountability through the press, detailing that finding the truth is both their right and their duty.

The series is based around this very narrative where Naga tells the audience that journalists are questioners, seekers, and ultimately messengers which in Telugu translates to ‘Dhootha’.

Very soon, however, as Naga begins covering some odd killings which always finds victims standing in...

Image
Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi’s riveting and deliciously sinister mystery-thriller film ‘Kadak Singh’ was inaugurated at the opening ceremony of the 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa.

A spree of secrets, lies and mysteries unveil themselves as a retrograde amnesiac Kadak Singh, who is seemingly timid and meek may just be something the exact opposite of that, as what looked like a warm family drama story quickly took a dark turn in the film’s trailer.

Boasting suspense, drama, emotional weight, violence and great thrills, the trailer sees Panjak Tripathi as Ak Srivastav aka Kadak Singh, a man who finds himself in a hospital with no memory.

Surrounded by what were once familiar and now unknown faces, Kadak Singh suffers from retrograde amnesia and at the surface appears like a very gentle, nice and meek kind of a person.

That may very well be the case for him now,...
