The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pa. Ranjith, is a historical adventure that narrates the erased role of oppressed communities in the exploration of gold in southern India.

Commenting on the tribute video on Vikram’s birthday, Pa.Ranjith, said: “’Thangalaan’ is a vision to present a historical adventure story based on true events, backed by phenomenal effort from Vikram sir and the entire team. I am confident the film will reach the globe and the targeted audience with the might of Jio Studios.

Actress Parvathy Thiruvothu, who predominantly works in Malayalam and Tamil cinema celebrated her 36th birthday on Sunday. The actress was greeted with a new poster of her upcoming Tamil historical action film ‘Thangalaan’ by the makers.

The poster shows her character of Gangamma standing against the burning fire in a field. ‘Thangalaan’, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pa Ranjith, also stars Tamil star Chiyaan Vikram, Malavika Mohanan, Hollywood actor Daniel Caltagirone.

The film is set in 1880 when the Kolar Gold Fields (Kgf) in Karnataka and the gold mining was at its peak. It shows the bravery and war the people of Kgf fought against the Britishers and how they protected the Kolar Gold Fields. The filmmaker researched for more than two years before taking the film to the streets.

Netflix has pulled a film from its Indian streaming platform following a backlash from offended rightwing Hindu groups.

The Guardian reports that the film has been criticised for its depiction of a member of a traditionally vegetarian caste cooking and eating meat. The film has also been criticised for its depiction of Hindu deity Lord Ramthat, implying he ate meat while in exile.

The newspaper reports that Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Vhp), a hardline rightwing Hindu group began spearheading a protest against the film on Wednesday, saying it was “intentionally released to hurt Hindu sentiments.” Protests also occurred outside Netflix offices.

Within 24 hours, The Guardian reports that the film’s makers Zee Entertainment, had apologized, saying the film would be withdrawn and re-edited to prevent any further offence.
